Syllabus:
1. Chapter 1 Introduction and basic concepts
States of matter, definition of fluid, continuum concept, stress field, viscosity, Newtonian vs non-
Newtonian fluids, Elasticity, vapor pressure & cavitation, surface tension, slip and no slip
condition.
2. Chapter 2 Hydrostatics Pressure and fluid statics
Pressure definition, pressure transmission, Pascals law, pressure variation with height (hydrostatic
equation), absolute and gage pressure, pressure measurement devices, hydrostatic force on a plane
surface, curved surfaces (tutorial), pressure distribution in rigid body motion.
3. Chapter 3 Fluid kinematics
Velocity, acceleration, Eulerian and Lagrangian approaches, material derivative, types of flows (1-
D, 2-D, 3-D, steady and unsteady, incompressible and compressible, viscid and inviscid, laminar
turbulent), streamlines, pathlines, and streaklines, Bernoulli equation, stagnation point and
pressure.
4. Chapter 4 - Integral approach to fluid equations
Control volume and control surface Reynolds transport theorem, conservation of mass, linear
momentum, angular momentum, energy equation, moving control volume.
5. Chapter 5 Differential approach to fluid equations
Fluid element kinematics, mass conservation in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates, stream
function, conservation of linear momentum, Eulers equation, Navier Stokes equation, basics of
potential flows, exact solution of N-S equations.
6. Chapter 6 Dimensional Analysis
Introduction, Buckingham Pi-theorem, steps, dimensional groups, one Pi-term, 2 or more pi terms,
self similarity.
7. Chapter 7 Internal flows Fluid flow in pipes
Entrance and developed flow, hydrodynamic developed length, viscous effects in pipes, laminar
and turbulent regions, head loss, friction factor, Darcy-Weisbach equation, laminar fully
developed pipe flow, turbulence modeling, turbulent flow in pipes, flow in non circular ducts,
minor losses (bends, fittings valves etc.)
8. Chapter 8 External flows Fluid flow over bodies
Basics of external flows, Lift and drag concept, boundary layer concept, displacement thickness,
momentum thickness, momentum integral estimates, boundary layer equations, Blasius solution
for flat plates, laminar and turbulent flow over flat plate, effects of pressure gradient.
9. Chapter 9 Compressible flows
Basic equations for 1-D compressible flow, isentropic flow of an ideal gas, subsonic flow, sonic and
supersonic flows, isentropic flow in a converging nozzle, normal shocks, basic equation of normal shock.

Grading Policy: Subject to minor changes.
