 The idea of setting up the society arose out of a
trauma. Shri D. R. Mehta, Founder & Chief Patron of BMVSS
met with a serious life-threatening road accident. With his
own self-realization and also promptings from the treating
orthopedic surgeons, Dr Ganga Ram Purohit and Dr M.M.
Bapna, both of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Jodhpur, the idea
of setting up BMVSS was born.
Dr. Bapna and Dr. Purohit would later constantly
remind Mr. Mehta of the plight of poor patients who had lost
their limbs. They asked - where would a poor person losing
limb by accident or disease, go to get an artificial limb? Thus
in recognition of the need of an institutionalized arrangement
for helping such people, BMVSS was set up. Later other
Samaritans joined the project.

GENESIS
Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur, an
NGO, was registered as a Society, under Rajasthan Societies Registration Act
261/1974-75 on March 29, 1975. This was to commemorate 2500th year of
Nirvana of Bhagwan Mahaveer, the apostle of Ahimsa and Lord of

MISSION
According to a sample survey conducted by the
Government of India, there are about 10 million people
suffering from loco-motor disabilities, of which about
one million are those who lost their limbs and another
four million people suffer from polio. Even though polio
has been eliminated in India now, the demand for calipers
for old polio cases continues. Further, loss of limbs is
also rampant as a result of accidents, landmine and
gunshot victims in war zones and strife-torn areas,
diseases (like diabetes burger's) etc. The Mission of
BMVSS is to provide limbs, calipers and other aids and
appliances to as many of such disabled, as possible, at its
centers, and through its outreach programmes and
rehabilitation camps.
BMVSS is also programmed to provide financial
and other support for a select few for the economic and
social rehabilitation of the disabled, particularly through
low-cost quick-maturing livelihood and employment
schemes.
BMVSS is also committed to undertake and
promote Research & Development for improving the
existing artificial limbs, calipers and other aids and
appliances and developing the new ones for to improve the

world over, the limb fitment takes weeks, or months,
involving, multiple visits of the beneficiaries at
considerable cost and hardship.
(4) The patients are served with empathy and personal
care.
(5). While, fitment of limbs or calipers requires
customized fabrication, BMVSS, has, to a large
extent, introduced the assembly-line method in many
of its processes, to cover the largest number of patients
in the shortest time. However, while doing so quality is

(6) The technical management is taken care of by able and
expert medical professionals.
(7) Being a social institution, running on grants and
donations, special efforts are made to keep the cost on
overheads and administration as low as possible. The
world renowned management consultant, Prof. C. K.
Prahalad of Michigan University USA, in his famous
book The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid after
due diligence, computed this cost of BMVSS on
overhead and administration as just 4% of its total
budget. This is perhaps amongst the lowest for the
NGOs in the world.
(8) Most importantly, the management has been so
designed that the largest number of beneficiaries are
covered in the shortest possible time.
JAIPUR FOOT TECHNOLOGY
BMVSS uses the famous Jaipur Foot. It is the
parent body for Jaipur Foot.
Jaipur Foot is technically distinct from other foot /
limb technologies. Jaipur Foot was developed at the
S.M.S. Medical College Hospital, Jaipur in 1968 by a
group of eminent orthopedic surgeons and highly
innovative craftsmen. The subsequent developments in the
technology were under aegis of BMVSS.
Like all lower limb prosthesis, the Jaipur Foot /
limb Technology has three vital components namely -

unique and innovative.
The Jaipur Foot is the only non-
articulated foot in the world that provides
mobility in all three planes i.e. Dorsi-flexion,
Inversion / Eversion and transverse rotation.
The Jaipur Foot enables amputees to
walk, run, trek, swim, squat, sit cross legged,
walk on uneven terrain, work in wet muddy
fields etc. With it a below knee amputee can climb a tree or
a mountain also. It can be used with or without shoes.
Jaipur Foot is a 'Universal Foot'. It distinguishes
itself from other sophisticated and expensive western
prosthetic foot such as SACH Foot, which neither
permits any of these activities nor is energy storing
prosthetic foot which is activity specific.
A bio-mechanical comparison of the Jaipur Foot
with the SACH & Seattle Foot was carried out at the Royal
Liverpool Hospital, UK by Prof. Klenerman et al. The
results showed that the performance of the Jaipur Foot was
more natural and nearer to the normal foot as compared to
the SACH and Seattle Foot.

With the exceptionally generous support of Paul
Hamlyn Foundation London, a U.K. charity, on the
November 27, 2012, BMVSS set up Paul Hamlyn
International Center for Prosthetics & Orthotics, which is
focused on research and development in the field of disability.
It was inaugurated by Ms. Jane Hamlyn, the chair person and
also the daughter of late Mr. Paul Hamlyn. It is located in the
Malviya Nagar, Jaipur Center of BMVSS.
One of the features of this Paul Hamlyn Center is the
establishment of the state-of-art and one of the most modern
Gait Labs in India and even in the world. This has been funded
by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd.,
New Delhi.
This is in furtherance of the Research &
Development work. The Gait Lab is equipped to study post
prosthetic amputee Gait. Gait analysis is the systematic study
of locomotion using the eye & brain of the observer
augmented by instrumentation for measuring body
movements & forces.
The Gait Lab consists of infrared cameras placed
around a walkway linked to a data station. Fifteen markers are
placed at various anatomical points of reference on the
patient's body. The patient is made to walk down the walkway
which has floor mounted load transducers, known as the
Force plate. The computer calculates the trajectory of each
marker in 3 dimensions. A complete breakdown of the
movement and forces about each joint is calculated.
This is used to assess, plan and treat individuals with
conditions affecting their ability to walk. The net forces and
net moments of forces are computed about each joint at every
stage of the gait cycle. The study thus quantifies the
measurable parameters of gait which are compared to
normative parameters to identify gait deviations. The

COST
BMVSS provides limbs, aids and appliances
(wheelchairs, hand-paddled tricycles, crutches etc), to all the
disabled beneficiaries at its centres, FREE OF COST.
However, BMVSS has to bear the cost of limbs. Prof.
C. K. Prahalad in his book The Fortune at the Bottom of the
Pyramid observed that in the year 2002 while the cost of the
Jaipur limb was US$ 30, the cost for a comparable limb in the
USA was US$ 8,000. Currently, the average cost of Jaipur
limb to BMVSS is about US $ 50 against to the reported price
of US$ 12,000 for a comparable limb in the USA.
AWARDS
D.R. Mehta, Founder & Chief Patron, BMVSS,
received one of the highest civilian award of India Padma
Bhushan for his outstanding contribution towards society and
the handicaps. This award was presented in the year 2008 by
President of India Smt. Pratibha Patil. V. R. Mehta executive
president BMVSS is also a received of the prestigious Padma
Shri award from President of India in 2015.
The Founder and Chief Patron of BMVSS ,
Devendra Raj Mehta was honoured the coveted Rajiv Gandhi
National Sadbhavana Award for the year 2012 by Prime
Minister Sh. Manmohan Singh.
The Tech Museum Innovation Organization, based in San
Jose, California, confers the tech award for innovation for
the benefit of humanity on Devendra Raj Mehta in the year
2007.
BMVSS received the national award for being the
best institution for the handicapped from the Government
of India in the year 1982. Again BMVSS received the
national award for the best institution working in the field
of rehabilitation of the disabled from the Ministry of Social
Justice and Empowerment, Government of India in the
year 1998.
The Mayor of Manila presented Mr. V.R. Mehta
and Mrs. Vimla the key to the city of Manila and also
adopting them as Son and Daughter of Manila for
humanitarian work in providing the Jaipur Foot and other
prosthetics in Philippines. He was also honoured by the
Philippines House of Representative through a special
resolution appreciating his continued help in improving
reach of Jaipur Foot in the Philippines.

programmes in the development of India for ensuring five

Hyderabad, Ambala, Srinagar, Indore, Chennai, Patna
and Ahmadabad. The Society (Jaipur Foot/Limb and
Calipers) supplements efforts in making disabled
persons functional by providing artificial limbs, calipers,
other aids and appliances, economic assistance free of
charge.
This enables them to regain their self-respect
and human dignity as also to become normal and useful
members of the community. The Jaipur Limb is so
efficient that after this limb is fitted, a person can walk
like a normal person without a stick or support, and even
run, ride a bicycle and climb a tree. Many of the patients
can, after the fitment, go back to work in the fields,
factories, shops and offices. Jaipur Foot has also been
fitted to landmine victims and others in foreign countries
like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Lebanon,
Nigeria, Nepal, Nairobi, Pakistan, Panama, Philippines,
Somalia, Sudan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
FINANCING
BMVSS meets a part of its costs from the grants
given by the Government of India (Ministry of Social
Justice & Empowerment). A very small portion of the cost
is also met out from the interest / dividend income earned
from the corpus of BMVSS created over the last more than
three decades. The rest of the large cost is met by donations
of generous and caring individuals and corporations . It has
always been a herculean task to raise required resources
every year, in order to smoothly carry out its mission and
objectives.
APPEAL
It is an appeal to all the friends of the disabled,
supporters and well wishers of BMVSS to generously
contribute on a sustainable basis so that, the hapless
handicapped can regain their mobility and dignity.

has revolutionised life for millions of landmine amputees. The

As aid pours into Afghanistan, a special consignment from
Jaipur Foot-That All May Walk
India is probably bringing more happiness to Kabul than the rest of
the worlds cargo combines.The consignment consists of 1000,
pieces of the Jaipur Foot, a prosthesis named after the city where it
was developed in 1970.It was taken on a special Indian Air Force
plane to KabulAs goodwill gesture go, it has probably earned
India more appreciation than any amount of diplomacy.Along
with the consignment went a team from Bhagwan Mahaveer
Viklang Sahayta Samiti (BMVSS), a Jaipur charity that provides
artificial legs for the poor. The Jaipur Foot is household name
among people who live in the worlds many war zones. From
Afghanistan to Angola, the below-the knee limb is famous for
transforming the lives of millions of landmine amputees.

Jaipur Foot is the worlds largest prosthesis provider, with more
than 16,000 prosthetic fittings per year. The charity BMVSS serves
more than 60,000 by providing calipers, appliances, and other aids.
The functionality of the Jaipur Foot measured against what is
available in the United States along more than 20 dimensions, is
equal or better. However, the Jaipur Foot costs less than $30
compared to $8,000 for a comparable prosthesis in the United
States. In fact, the Jaipur Foot is given free to all. Jaipur Foot is now
in more than 16 countries where BOP patients exist, such as
Afghanistan, Angola, Somalia, Iraq, Mozambique,
Cambodia,Vietnam Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Fiji and
Vietnam.
BMVSS was established in March 1975 by Mr DR Mehta. In
the first seven years after the development of the Jaipur Foot in
1968, hardly 50 limbs were fitted. In the first year after the formation
of the society, 59 limbs were fitted. Now the number of limbs fitted
every year approaches 16,000.During the time from march 1975
(when BMVSS was established) to March 2003, BMVSS
successfully fitted 236,717 limbs in India and 14,070 around the
world.If not for the value system and patient-centric management
practices followed by BMVSS, Jaipur Foot might have remained
on the shelf in limbo. BMVSS emphasizes, a holistic approach to
addressing the problems of amputees. The society focuses on not
only the medical problems of the underprivileged, but also the
financial and social problems.
Jaipur Foots expenses breakdown for the 2002 fiscal year

underscores the efficiency of expense and underpins the Societys
efforts to serve a as many patients as possible given its financial
resources. Nearly 90 percent of the companys expense in the 2002
fiscal year was directly related to the cost of producing and fitting
prosthesis for the poor. Another seven percent of expenses went
toward other forms of charitable assistance. Only four percent of its
expenditure went towards administrative and overhead expenses.

and BMVSS. This magazine is an allied publication of Gulf news,
UAE, which says,
