Behavior Contingency Plan

Title: You scream, I scream, lets not scream for ice cream!
Undesirable behavior target: The classroom is often at an inappropriate noise level when working in small
groups. This behavior makes it hard for all students to stay on task as they are easily distracted by the noise of
other groups. This behavior also makes it difficult for the teacher to easily and clearly give feedback to groups
because the classroom is too loud.
Desirable behavior: All students will stay at the designated noise level during small group work. Students will
be instructed by the teacher at the beginning of each lesson as to which noise level they should be at. The
teacher will refer to the chart on the bulletin board for which level they would like the students to be at. The
teacher will model what this noise level sounds like for students.
Types of positive reinforcements - Reinforced when & how?
1. Immediate R+ : When students display the target behavior they will receive one scoop of ice cream to add
to the bulletin board.
2. Ongoing R+: Once the students have accumulated 10 scoops, they will win one secret ingredient for
homemade ice cream.
3. Overall R+ : Once the students have accumulated all the ingredients to make homemade ice cream, the
teacher will walk students through the steps to make the ice cream during the science lesson that day.
4. The teacher will announce to the class at the end of the group work activity if they accomplished the goal of
controlling their talking. If they did, the teacher will randomly select a student by using the popsicle stick in a
jar method to handout the scoop and have the student add it to the bulletin board.
Interactive Learning Activity:
As a class we will make ice cream to observe, record, and discuss how materials can be changed by heating or
cooling. TEK: (K.5B) Matter and energy. The student knows that objects have properties and patterns. The
student is expected to observe, record, and discuss how materials can be changed by heating or cooling.
Explain HOW you will Teach the Desired Behaviors:
I will teach the desired behavior by implementing the above noise level chart in my classroom. I will discuss
and model with students what that noise level looks like. I will invite the students to role play with me so we
can practice each noise level together.
Explain HOW you will Teach the Plan:
I will teach the desired behavior during the science. I will introduce the topic of heating and cooling and tell
students that ice cream is the result of cooling materials. I will explain that if the newly taught desired
behavior is accomplished, they will receive one scoop of ice cream to add to our bulletin board. Once they
have accumulated 10 scoops, the students will receive one secret ingredient for homemade ice cream. Once
all the ingredients are won, we will make ice cream in class during a science lesson.
Provide options
This behavior plan is for a Kindergarten classroom but could be adapted for most elementary grades as they all
have a TEK about heating and cooling.
