WelcometoIntroductiontoClinicalPsychology.Throughaseriesoflectures,readings,exercises,
films,anddemonstrations,thiscoursewillintroduceyoutothewaysthatclinicalpsychologists
approachtheconceptualization,assessment,diagnosis,andtreatmentofhealthproblems.Inparticular,
wewillfocusonthescientificbasisforthepracticeofclinicalpsychology.Wewillalsobeexploring
someofthecurrenthottopicsandlongstandingcontroversiesinourfield.Uponcompletionofthis
course,youwillhaveagoodunderstandingofthebreadthofactivitiesandsettingsinwhichclinical
psychologistsparticipate.Youwillalsobebetterpreparedtobeaconsumerofpsychologicalscience
andwillbeorientedtowardsthestepsneededtogainadditionaltraininginthisfield.

suggestthatyouusethekeytermsandfocusquestionsineachchapterasselfteststoenhanceyour

shorttheyaremeanttobeaframeworkthatisfilledinbythesupplementalreadings,lecturesand

C.TheLectures:Thelectureswillbothhelptoclarifythetopicsinthetextbookaswellasexpandupon
textbookmaterialinnewways.Sometimeswewilllookmoreintensivelyatparticulartopics,review
originalresearchstudies,updatecertaintopicswithcuttingedgeresearch,andapplytopicstoreallife
events. Iwillalsoshowvideosandtrydemonstrationsthatarenotdescribedinyourtext.Youare
expectedtoattendalllectures.Ifyouknowthatyouwillmissalectureduetoreligiousholidayor

1.TeamDebateWork:Duringweek14,wewillbeusingourclasstimetoreviewsomeoftheclassic
debatesandcurrentcontroversiesinthefieldofclinicalpsychology.Thisactivityisdesignedtogive
youthechancetoapplyyourcriticalthinkingskillstosomeofthemostimportantandinteresting
topicsinthisfield.Youwillbeassignedtoateam,topic,andposition.Therearenorightorwrong
answers,andyouwillnotbegradedonthepositionyoutake.Youwillbegradedonthequalityof
scientificthinkingthatyouevidenceintheargumentsyoumakeandthewayyoucritiqueopposing
arguments.Eachgroupwillbeprovidedwithsomebasicmaterialstobeginpreparingyour
arguments,andwewillbeusingsomeclasstimeon11/19inthecomputerlabtoallowyourteamto
researchadditionalmaterials.Itisimportantthateveryonebepresentforthepreparationand
presentationofyourteamsposition.
2.Quizzes:Therewillbe7quizzesoverthecourseofthesemester.Yourtwolowestgradeswillbe
dropped(leavingyou5quizzes,eachworth1pointofyourfinalgrade).Thesequizzeshaveseveral
purposes,includingkeepingyouontrackwithyourreading,identifyingareasthatyoumightnot
understandpriortotakingyourmidtermsandfinals,andprovidingyouwiththeopportunitytoget
comfortablewithmytestingstylebeforetheexams.Eachquizwillhave45multiplechoicequestions
andwewillgooverthecorrectanswersinclass.Thequizzeswillgenerallybeatthestartofclass,so
pleasebeontime.Makeupquizzescannotbegiven.Ifyoumissaquiz,youwillreceiveascoreof0
forthatquiz.Peoplesometimeshavetomissclassduetoillnessortravel,soyouhavethe

3.Exams:Therewillbethreenoncumulativeexamsthroughoutthesemester.Eachwillcover
materialsfromthetextbook,lecture,classexercises,andsupplementalreadings.Examswillinclude
bothmultiplechoiceandshortanswerquestions.Thisisyourchancetoshowwhatyouknow!There
willnouseoftexts,notes,orelectronicdevicesduringexaminations.Pleasebring#2pencilswith
erasers,andthe100answerAccuScanscantrons(availableinthebookstore)torecordyouranswers.
Makeupexamswillbegivenonlyintheeventofmedicalemergency.Youwillalsoberequiredto
presentappropriatedocumentation(e.g.,documentationofahospitalstay).Studentswhomissan
examwithoutpreviouslyinformingmeand/orwhocannotprovidedocumentationwillreceiveazero

4.ResearchArticleSummary:Inordertohelpyoudevelopyourunderstandingofpsychological
methodologyandtogiveyouachancetopracticeyourskillsinevaluatingpsychologicalfindings,you
willberequiredtocompleteabrief(23page)summaryofaresearcharticle.Articlesappropriatefor
thispapercanbefoundonthecoursewebsite,alongwithdetailedinstructionsforthepaper.Ifyoud
liketouseanarticleotherthantheonesonthecoursewebsite,pleasecontactme.Idbehappyto
haveyouuseanarticleofinteresttoyouaslongasitisappropriatetothecoursecontentand
relevanttothefieldofclinicalpsychology,butyoumustclearthisdecisionwithmenolaterthanone

5.Participation iscrucial.Pleaseaskquestions,offerobservations,andsuggestalternative
perspectivesduringclass.Therewillbeplentyofopportunityfordiscussionasaclassandinsmall
groups.Contributionstothecoursediscussionboardandyouruseofmyofficehourswillalso
contributetoyourparticipationscore.Yourparticipationshoulddemonstratethatyouareassessing
yourownunderstanding(i.e.askingquestionsaboutthingsyoudontunderstand),thatyouare
applyingapsychologicallenstoyourdailyexperiences,andthatyouareactivelyprocessingthe
materialpresentedinclass.
Youcannotparticipateeffectivelyinclassifyouarechatting,texting,playingWordswithFriends,or
updatingyourFacebookstatus.Phonesandanynonessentialelectronicdevicesaretobekept
insideofabagorbackpackatalltimesduringclass.Ifyouhaveafamilyorhealthrelatedemergency

6.ExtraCredit:Oneimportantandinterestingwaytolearnaboutclinicalpsychologyisparticipation
inexperimentsandtrainingexercises.Becausethereisnolabsectiontothiscourse,participationin
interviewsorexperimentswillgiveyouauniqueopportunitytolearnfirsthandaboutthemethodsand
toolsusedinclinicalpsychology.Theseexperienceswillbringalivethetopicswehavebeen
discussinginclass.Youcanearnuptoatotalof5(1/2lettergrade)pointsofextracreditthrough
somecombinationofoptionsbelow(nofurthercreditcanbeearnedbeyond3points):
a. Participateinexperiments:Youwillearn1pointperhourofexperimentparticipation
andcorrespondingresponsepaper,uptoatotalof5credits(5hoursofparticipation).

mustprovidemewitha1pageresponsepaperregardingyourexperiencedoingthe
study.Thisresponsepapershouldincludeyourimpressions(eitherguessesorfromthe
debriefing)ofthepurposeofthestudy,factorsyouthinkmayhaveshapedyourresponse
patternsinthestudy,andanoverallreflectionofwhatyoulearnedbybeinginthestudy.
b. Participateinaninterview:Youwillearn1pointperhour(generallythisexperience
lastsonehour)ofparticipationinaninterviewwithagraduatestudentaspartoftheir
traininginlearningtodointerviews.Youwouldbeinterviewedbytwostudents,andthe
interviewwillbeobservedbytheinstructorandfourothergraduatestudentsfrombehind
aonewaymirror.Inordertoreceivecredit,youwillalsoberequiredtowritea1page
responsepapertoturnintomereflectingonyourexperienceofbeinginterviewed.More
informationaboutthisopportunitywillbepresentedinclass,alongwithinformationabout
howtosignup.
c. Participateasanassessmentvolunteer:Youwillearn5pointsofextracreditfor
servingasafakeassessmentvolunteerforgraduatestudentslearningtodo
psychologicalassessmentsandwritinga1pagereflectionpaperaboutyourexperience.
Youwouldbetestedbyafirstyeargraduatestudentinclinicalpsychologyworkingunder
thesupervisionofalicensedclinicalpsychologist.Ifyouselectthisoption,youwillspend
severalhoursspreadoveranumberofdaysdoingthisassessment,andyoumust

evaluationtobreakroleinordertomakesurethattherearenotrueissuesofdangerousnessthatthe

actingincharacter.Donotdoanythingthatwouldbeconstruedasprovocativeorharassingonany
basis.Shouldyouchooseeitheroftheseoptions,youwillbescreenedbytheTAforthatcourse.Youwill
bescreenedtoensurethatyouarenotinmoredistressthanisappropriatetodiscussinthistraining
environment.Pleasedonotvolunteerifyouarecurrentlydepressed,sufferfromPTSD,areonmedication
foramentalhealthproblem,orareexperiencingsubstanceabuseordependence.Ifyouthinkyoumight
