1.7
The implementation of a credit system has three princjP'\'~requisites:

1.7.1 A "courses of study" booklet that the Institution must prepare at

least 3 months ahead o,f the beginning of the semester. This
booklet will list courses offered slot-wise. The booklet specifies
the courses their type and the teacher handling the course and
pre-requisites if any. Each course is characterized in the credit
system by the specification of the number of lectures, nUl1}berof
tutorial hours, number of practical hours per week during a
semester and the number of credits. Thus a 3-1-0-4 course
represents a course with 3 lecture hours one tutorial hour no
practical hours and carrying 4 credits.

1.7.2 A slot wise time-table. A "slot" refers to specified hours during

the week during which each course will be taught. Generally the
time-table provides for lecture/tutorial based courses with 3 or 4
hourly meetings every week and for 3; hour practical classes.
1.7.3 ,Letter grades based on relative grading is a desirable feature.
Relative grading is a recognition of the fact that grading in terms
of absolute percentage of marks Implies a finer resolution of
differences in performance of students in examinations than is
warranted., Secondly, the absolute marking system does not
take into account the difficulty' of the question paper and th~e

'--
'"

strictness 'of the teacher in evaluating the exams. Thirdly, it does

not perrT1;ita fair 'c0l'!!Parison between two different batches of
, , '

students. Relative grading assigns ,letter ,grades based ~>n the

mean and the standard deviation of the marks obtaineq by the
entire class. The assumption is that, statistically the academic
. ,

talent of one batch' is not likely to be different from that of

another in a given Institution and that the average marks and the
standard deviation are useful paramete~s to account for the
variations discussed above.

Method of Awarding Letter Grades
Awarding Letter Grades to students at the end of the semester is the sale
responsibility of the teacher. For this benefit, the following procedure is
suggested:

i) The dividing line between A and B grade could be the gap around
85% or 1.2 times the Class Average depending upon the
judgement of the teacher

ii) The dividing line between Band C grade could be the gap around
70% or the class average depending upon the judgement of the
teacher;

iii ) The dividing line between ~ and C grades could be the gap around
55% or 2/3 the class average as per the judgement of the teacher;
and

ivy The dividing line between D and U grades could be the gap around
40% or 0.5 times the class average as per the judgement of the ... ,

teacher;
, .
v) Subject further to the provision that any student securing 85% Or
~bove marks in the absolute grading' shall be awarded the ~ A'
, " (N'
Grade and any' student ~curing 40% ?f" above shall" not be
awarded the' U' grade.
