This Week in Cebu (August 7 to 13, 2017)

The second week of August is the ideal time to explore Cordova, with its Dinagat Festival, new
bridge, and a local restaurant offering the bounty of the sea.Over at Cebu City, locals and tourists
can join a photo walk, visit a museum, or shop for baked goods.Innovative transport solutions
like a new motorcycle-hailing app and e-jeepneys promise to make traffic woes in the city a bit
more bearable.

Dinagat Festival

The municipality of Cordova will celebrate the 18th Dinagat Festival this August 7.As part of the
celebration, there will be various activities such as street dancing, individual and group
presentations, and a festival queen competition.The festivities will showcase the local fishing
culture of Cordova, which is known for bakasi (sea eel).It also aims to drive awareness for
respecting and protecting marine resources.

Fourth Mactan-Cebu bridge

Even with preliminary work on the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway slated last July, government
authorities are already looking into building a fourth Mactan-Mandauebridge. The Department
of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is considering constructing a bridge connecting Cebu
to Bohol .They will tap the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to do a feasibility study
on the project.The proposed structure is part of President Rodrigo Dutertes comprehensive plan
to connect different provinces in Visayas to turn it into one economic region.

A great selection of seafood and Filipino favorites can be enjoyed at Lantaw Floating Native
Restaurant.It is located 40 minutes away from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and is
within walking distance to another Cordova tourist spot, 10000 Roses Caf and More.Their
unique dishes include Cordova Express, their own take on Bicol Express, and bakasi, which
customers can order stewed (nilarang) or fried. At sundown, one can also enjoy a view of the
Cebu City skyline and Talisay City amidst the waters of Cebu Strait.

Cathedral Museum of Cebu

One of the many heritage sites one can visit downtown is the Cathedral Museum of Cebu, which
dates back to the early 19th century.The museum features a chapel, exhibition area, and several
galleries showcasing the personal effects of Cardinal Ricardo Vidal and other instruments of the
Catholic faith.The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Sunday. Entrance is at
PhP50 for locals, PhP100 for foreigners, PhP25 for students, and PhP15 for kids.

Baked goodies from Cardinal Bakery

For sweet treats to take home, locals and tourists can head to Cardinal Bakery.One of the
popular items at this homegrown bakery is the cheese bread, which retails at PhP25 per piece
and PhP180 per box.Aside from bite-sized baked goods like ensaymada (brioche with cheese and
sugar) and brownies, they also have whole cakes which range from PhP350 to PhP780.Cardinal
Bakery has an outlet in Taboan and a coffee shop called Cardinal Coffea in Capitol Site.

Fujifilm Nationwide Photowalk

The Cebu leg of the Fujifilm Nationwide Photowalk is slated for August 12, 2017, 6:00 AM.The
meet-up point for participants will be at Magellans Cross. The photowalk is open to all camera
users, but the contest is open to Fujifilm users only. The event is free of charge and is part of the
celebration of the fifth anniversary of Fujifilm Philippines.

Angkas app now in Cebu

Commuters in Cebu City can now use Angkas, a new motorcycle-hailing service. The service lets
users book a motorcycle ride through an app. Angkas flag-down rate is at PhP20, while every
additional kilometer is charged at PhP10.Though the Land Transportation Franchising and
Regulatory Board has ordered Angkas to cease operations, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmea said
he will allow Angkas to operate for the benefit of the public.

E-jeeps riding soon in Cebu

Local transport groups have expressed their willingness to replace some of their gasoline- or
diesel-fuelled jeepneys with environment-friendly vehicles. Leaders of the Cebu Integrated
Transport Service Cooperative (CITRASCO) and Visayas United Drivers Transport Services
Multipurpose Cooperative (VUDTRASCO) have said that they are willing to shift to e-
jeepneys.Australian firm Solar 8 can provide 2,000 e-jeepneys which run on solar power instead
of fossil fuels. The e-jeepneys are expected to start operating within the year.
