DECLARATION OF MARTIAL LAW
INTRODUCTION

Since the campaign rally of Rodrigo Duterte until his presidency, Martial Law has

been the undying topic our our country and even around the globe. Last May

2017, ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) militant and Mauti rebellious group had

intruded and ravage the land Marawi. Establishments, schools and churches

were burned down together with the slaughter of hundreds of innocent people.

Escape is the only hope of for the survivors. People all over the country began to

panic especially the neighbouring cities. On May 23, 2017 at 10 pm, Martial Law

was finally declared by the President for the entire land of Mindanao due to

terrorism.

Face book has been the fastest channel to spread the news. It was the only way

to witness the real-time events on site and to disseminate the cries of each

stranded people in need of help. With this, the Police Intelligence warned the

Netizens to stop spreading unreliable images and video clips for safety reasons.

The news was a raging fire that people do not even know who and what to

believe. Yet as the declaration of Martial Law began many cried out with mixed

anger and fear. They forgot the innocent people who died. They forgot Marawi.

They forgot the safety of our nation.

PROBLEM

The following comments were separately distributed and shared on Facebook

by each member of this survey:

Positive: Martial Law can reduce terrorism and rebellious group of people especially in

Mindanao.

Negative: People nowadays are ignorant of the importance of Martial Law; they

prefer freedom rather than protection.

Within few days people reacted more on the negative comments than with the

positive; having shown the mental perspective of the Filipinos representing the

nation.

HYPOTHESIS

Lack of knowledge, insufficient historical records and bias media reports were

the main reasons why most people are against Martial Law.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The data for this research was collected using the survey in the Facebook. The

survey was created using suitable question modified from related research and

individual questions formed by the researcher. The survey was comprised 1

question each positive and negative, which were related to the participants
perception regarding to "The Declaration of the Martial Law" . You have to react

to determine if the respondent agreed o disagreed in a statement you post in

facebook. The positive question is " People nowadays are ignorant of the

importance of the Martial Law; they prefer freedom than protection". The

numbers of reaction is 69 and also the comment was " Try to look and go there

to the outside of our society. And you will see , and also try to listen and hear

their cry ( I am talking to the cry of Lumad and Moro ). And the negative

question is "Martial Law can reduce terrorism and rebellions group people

especially in Mindanao". The number of reaction is 32 and the comment was "

One doesn't need to become a lawyer/historian to understand the opposition

to Martial Law is not equal to supporting the terrorists. It was a simple logic.

RESEARCH DESIGN:

Social Media Survey

DATA ANALYSIS

Freedom of expression has been everyones justifiable excuses. It has been a

valid approach to combat opposition. Though some countries abolished such

privilege there are still ways to openly express and spread the personal thoughts

and ideas. Social media such as Facebook has been a worldwide channel to
everyones desire, wants and needs. It has been the simplest, cheapest and

fastest medium to spread information. Yet amid the abundance of information

that could be easily obtain by click of a second many are still misled; many are

still distracted and confused.

Freedom of expression often causes many surfers to neglect and ignore the

capacity of everyone to think deeper and to search the truth diligently. Martial

Law is one of the unending issue that cause division in our country. Social media

has given most of the information we want yet freedom of expression overrides

the truth. People are confused. Truth was mixed with personal perspective.

Emotions have become the basis of opposition. Thus, feeling becomes a

reasonable fact to reject and abolish the firm truth.

CONCLUSION

Mental diversity is the main reason why a certain nation, or even around the

globe, have no unity when it comes to governing power. The undeniable fact

that people have different educational background and social status quo limit

their minds to notion and information that was given to them. Social media was

made to inform and educate people. Unfortunately, it was also used as a

medium to deceive and confuse many. Yet based on the survey, people

agreed more on the fact that many are still uneducated and misinformed to

what is the importance of Martial Law and its existence in our Constitution.
