15) Given:

Required: a) accelerations of the boxes b) tensions of the cable

Solution:

1. Setup the datum point and the direction

2. Setup the constraint equations and derive equations for acceleration

yA + 3yB = constant -> aA = 3aB

yC + yB = constant -> aC = aB
John Salvador Y. Ricacho

3. Draw the free body diagram for each particle ( in this case, the boxes)

4. Using Newtons second law, obtain the equations for each box

Box A: WA TA = mAaA
Box B: WB 3TA TC = mBaB
Box C: WC TC = mCaC

5. Rearrange and combine systems of equations

TA = WA mAaA = WA 3mAaB (1)

TC = WC mCaC = WC mCaB (2)
WB 3TA TC = mBaB (3)

a) accelerations
WB 3(WA 3mAaB) (WC mCaB) = mBaB
3

aB= ( )=
+9+
303(10)10 9.81

aB= ( )( )
30+9(10)+10 2

aB=-0.755 m/s2 =0.755 m/s2

aA = 3aB = -3(-0.755 m/s2) = 2.265 m/s2 =2.265 m/s2

aC = aB= -(-0.755 m/s2)= 0.755 m/s2

b) tensions

TA = WA mAaA = (10)(9.81 m/s2 ) (10kg)(2.265 m/s2)

TA= 75.45 N

TC = WC mCaC = (10)(9.81 m/s2 ) (10kg)(0.755 m/s2)

TC=90.55 N
