Summary
GVI Caqalai has been conducting socio-economic surveys to assess conditions surrounding natural resource use
in the District of Moturiki. The socio-economic survey is conducted with the goal of identifying areas of concerns
in the use of natural resources within the Moturiki communities and consequently developing a set of guidelines
to solve these concerns, thereby creating a natural resource sustainable management plan to ensure food
security for future generations.

Report
The Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area Network (FLMMA) is a body concerned with the
promotions and encouragement of the preservation, protection and sustainable use of
marine resources in Fiji by the stewards of these marine resources. To achieve this, it has 4
main levels of information gathering. The second level of information gathering is the socio-
economic assessments, carried out in communities to assess their socio-economic status.

The surveys are a rare chance for volunteers on both the Community and Marine
Conservation projects to work together, accompanied by a Fijian staff member for
translations. The survey allows marine conservation volunteers to engage themselves with
the community and to witness first- hand how villagers use their natural resource,
specifically, their iqoliqoli or marine resource. This survey also enables volunteers to have a
more hands-on approach to the grassroot level processes of conservation that is GVIs main
method of approach.
The questionnaire not only draws out information of marine resource use but also enables
the interviewer to gain a deeper insight into traditional knowledge of traditional fishing
practices thereby gaining an understanding of the kind of fishing pressures that is being
placed on the iqoliqoli cokovata or shared fishing grounds of Moturiki.
These results of these surveys will be presented to the Moturiki Yaubula Management
Support Team (MYMST), the Bose Vanua and the 10 villages of Moturiki. The data collected
from this survey will enable the MYMST to draw up effective natural resource management
strategies to ensure that their marine source will be able to provide food security for the
generations to come.
Following our success in completing surveys in the village of Daku during the first 3 months
of 2017, during April and May we completed surveys in all households of Yanuca village. This
is indeed a milestone achievement, given that the survey process means entering every single
household within the village and filling out a standard questionnaire compiled by FLMMA.
This brings the total households surveyed to 34 and puts us well on our way to completing
our target of completing 5 villages by the end of 2017.
