Water positive cement manufacturing company and beverage industries are working towards

conserving water for the betterment of the environment

Leonardo Da Vinci had rightly quoted, water is the driving force of all nature. Evidently, water
is one key component in most manufacturing industries. It is also the most used resource on
the planet, and also stands the highest chances of being depleted. A lot of industries try and
take measures to combat the wastage of water but only some meet their goals. Usage of water
in high amounts for these industries is inevitable but a lot of strategies could be implemented
to conserve water as it is a valuable resource, not just today but since ages. Let us have a look
at the prime industries that are successfully saving water whilst being top manufacturers of
their kind.

Ambuja
Certified by DNV GL, Ambuja is the leading water positive cement manufacturing company in
India. However, they aim to be a five times water positive cement manufacturing company by
the end of 2017. Implementation of various programs by the company like conventional dams,
check dams, micro and drip irrigation, river linking, etc. has got them to where they are today.
They also brought about rainwater harvesting which helped collect large quantities of water
which would have rather gone to waste. It sure did take a lot of time, but the results were
achieved steadily. Today, the company is the worlds first cement company which has been
certified as a water positive cement manufacturing company.

PepsiCo
In the year 2009, PepsiCo set a benchmark for other similar industries as it became the first
beverage company to achieve water positive balance, as confirmed by Deloitte Touch
Tohmatsu India Pvt. Ltd. The company has always been water positive since that year. Aquafina
- the packaged drinking water wing of PepsiCo has been the face of Pepsicos water conserving
measures. Apparently, through methods of water conservation in agriculture, rainwater
harvesting, and community watersheds, the company saved about 836 litres of water in 2009.
By the end of the year 2015, they had already cut down on their water consumption by 20%,
globally.

Coca-Cola
Ever since Coca-Cola started reporting efficiency projects since 2004 as a global brand, they
havent looked back. With their activities to restore more water than it is used, they have given
back nearly 191.9 billion litres of water. It somewhat comes down to 115% water that they have
used for the production of their beverages. The company has more than 245 water
replenishment projects which is spread across 71 countries. They had already installed 600
rainwater harvesting structures in India by the end of 2010. The company had a goal to
replenish 25% compared to their 2010 baseline, by the end of 2020, which they evidently
accomplished last year.

Looking at the increasing population, it is safe to anticipate that there will be a shortage of
water in the coming years. According to McKinsey, by the year 2030, only 60% of the worlds
demand and only about 50% in regions where water supply is already facing an issue of
regularity, will have their water consumptions fulfilled. Hence, water conservation is extremely
essential as the shortage of this precious resource is imminent.
