Chapter 1. GENERAL
1.1 Outline
The antenna unit uses a Log IF amplifier. The scanner unit is the same as that of FR-2115
(12KW) and FR-2125 (25kW). The difference between 6 kW and 12 kW sets is the use of
different type of the magnetron, and different setting of magnetron current.
The features are;
6 pulselengths enabling echo size on the screen to be similar in all ranges.
Flash ROM enabling program update to use a PC.
 Non-interlace, high-resolution display (1024q768 dots).
Improved short-range performance using shorter pulselength and higher repetition rate than
before.

The table below shows the major specifications of each model.

Chapter 2. BLOCK DESCRIPTION
2.1 Overview
Outline

Figure 2.1 Simplified block diagram

TX
The trigger pulse from the SPU (Processor) Board is delivered to the MODULATOR Board
which outputs the signal to oscillate the magnetron, and then radar wave is emitted from the
radiator.

RX
The 9.4 GHz echo signal received by the antenna is converted to 60 MHz signal by the MIC,
amplified by IF Amplifier, and fed to the SPU (Processor) Board as a video signal. It is digitally
processed and then displayed on the CRT. The SPU Board contains a video amplifier.

Auto Plotter (optional)

The following signals are applied from the SPU board to the ARP-10/17 Board: Heading,
Bearing pulse, Video, Trigger, Bearing in AD format, and Ships speed (contact closure or
NMEA 0183). Target acquision and tracking are performed on the ARP Board. Target data,
target position, CPA, TCPA, Speed, and Course, are displayed on the screen.

Plotter (optional)
Data such as latitude and longitude in NMEA format is delivered from the SPU Board to the RP
Board. Plotter data generated on the RP Board is output to the SPU Board and processed to
display them on the screen. The plotter menu is generated on the SPU Board.

Auto Tuning Function

The system provides auto tuning mode which eliminates the adjustment of the receiver for
maximum echoes. The Tune Initialization is required after not only the installation but also the
replacement of RF unit, magnetron, MIC, and SPU board, so that the tune control voltages for
each pulse are memorized onto the EEPROM. The figure below illustrates how the tune
initialization takes place. First, full search is performed using a long pulse to find the tuning
point (a). Next, short search is performed using all pulses to find tuning points (b). After the
initialization, the pulselength used before the tune initialization is selected.

Full search: Varying tune control voltage (TUNE CONT) from about 5 V to 32 V, the
maximum tune indicator voltage is found and that tune control voltage (a) is
memorized.

Short search: The tune control voltage changes between the tune voltage (a) plus and minus
2.5 V for fine tuning.

When the radar is set from ST-BY to TX, short search is made twice. When pulselength is
changed, short search is made once.

Figure 2.6 Tune Initialization

2-10

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

Tuning Indication
The tuning indicator extends more than 80% of its full length on all ranges at best tuning.
The self-test result display reads the tune indicator voltage.

Manual Tuning
When tuning mode is changed from auto to manual mode, the tuning control voltage (a) found in
full search is selected. In manual tuning mode, the graphical tuning control voltage indicator
appears on the screen. The minimum scale is 4.9 V and the maximum scale is 32 V.

Tuning Circuit
Figure below shows the tuning circuit. Tune control voltage is output from DJ1, #7 on the SPU
board.

Figure 2.7 Tuning Circuit

1. Auto tuning
Full search: U86 #1 changes from 32 Vdc to 2 Vdc.
Short search: U86 #1 changes from tuning point (b) +2.5 Vdc to tuning point (b) 2.5 Vdc.
2. Maunal tuning
U86 #1 changes from 5 Vdc to 32 Vdc.

Video Adjustment
The video adjustment is carried out through the Tune/video adjustment menu in the installation
setup menu.
7KH IROORZLQJ GHVFULEHV WKH RXWOLQH RI WKH DGMXVWPHQW

1) Main Bang suppression Level (MBS L) is set to 0.

2) EEPOT, U14 is set to minimum. (EEPOT initialization with L level of U14 #7)
3) EEPOT gets into step-up mode (U14 #2 is H.) to measure output video level at each step.
The step is changed by pulses applied to U14 #1. The step where the output level is 2.2 V is
memorized.
4) EEPOT gets into step-down mode (U14 #2 is L) to find and stores the step number where
the output level is 2.2 V.
5) Averaging the step numbers found in steps 3 and 4 above, and saving onto eepot. The stored
value is not erased when power is turned off.
6) MBS L is reset to the value previously used.
7) The value obtained in step 5 is stored onto the EEPROM. Thus, the EEPOT can be set for
both video signals from the scanner unit and the external radar.

Echo averaging (EAV 1/2/3)
1) Remarks on the echo-averaging feature
Echo averaging is a useful feature when used properly. If used improperly, however, the
result could be disastrous.
2) Objective and principle of echo averaging
The main objective of echo averaging is to discriminate targets (flocks of birds, other ships,
fishing floats, etc.) hidden in sea clutter, and stably display long range targets (ship, buoy,
island, etc.) which alternately appear and disappear on the screen.
Normally, unstable echoes such as those from sea clutter and noise appear at random
positions with every rotation of the antenna. To distinguish real target echoes from clutter,
the picture is stored and averaged over successive picture frames. If an echo is solid and
stable it is shown in its actual intensity. Unstable echoes are reduced in intensity.

The following illustrates how echo averaging EAV 1/2/3 work.

Echo Stretch 1/2 and Enhanced video

1. Echo stretch 1: Enlarges the echo in bearing direction. The same echo appears on the next
sweep.
2. Echo stretch 2: Enlarges the echo in range direction. The signal is integrated in the video
amplifier.
3. Enhanced video: The echo is enlarged to increase the number of memories to be filled with
the data.

Trail Copy

Trails can be continued even when the range is changed to a next larger or smaller range scale.
Note, however, that when the range is changed, no trail generated for targets outside of the
previous range.

Example 1) Range scale changed from 3 nm to 6 nm

The trail starts for targets more than 3 nm.

Example 2) Range scale changed from 6 nm to 3 nm

The pixels used for echo trailing are enlarged, so the displayed trail looses fineness
slightly.

Thin Trail
Thin trail is generated for the echo level of 8 or more, and the echo size of 8 or more (bearing
direction) x 3 or more (range direction). The width of echo trail may become bigger depending
on the size and shape of the target.

Clutter Sweep

The memory of target data, of which level is smaller than the preset value, is erased within about
one seconds. As a result, PPI-like picture or less time of the afterglow is obtained.
The clutter sweep circuit locates after the echo average circuit.

Check of ARP and RP board Connection

The system checks the connection of the ARP and RP board every power on. If the CPU on the
SPU board fails to communicate with the ARPA or RP board, the related display does not appear
on the screen, but also the ARP and/or RP line is not displayed on the self-test result display.

ARP-15 vs. ARP-17

The hardware of ARP-15 and ARP-17 is the same, but the ARP-17 has an additional EEPROM.
The software is different between ARP-15 and ARP-17.
Major feature of ARP-17 is;
1) Automatic tracking
2) More target to be tracked. (increared to 20 targets from 10 targets)
3) Guard ring (guard ring targets of 11)
4) Scenario test
5) Reference target speed

ARP-10
The ARP-10 is also used for Model 1832 series and FR-7062 series radors.

ARP-10 Block Diagram

1) ARP-10 dose not require QV echo adjustment at installation, unlike other existing ARPs.
No check point for QV echo is provided. The ARP display can be turned on/off thru the
ARP menu. The ARP data appears even when ships speed and gyro data are not supplied.

2) The ARP board is checked whether it is installed or not at every power-on, using the
communication line between SPU and ARP boards.
When the ARP display is on thru the menu and the ARP board is not fitted, the message
ARP is not connected appears.

3) When the target is not acquired, carry out the self test at TX condition.
TRIGGER/VIDEO/BP/HD must be OK, and FE-DATA 1/DATA 2must vary depending on
the gain setting. The lower the gain setting, the smaller the FE DATA value. The FE DATA
must not exceed 1000 with the maximum gain setting.

4) The program is stored on the flash ROM, not PROM, so a program writter MT-08 or PC is
required for updating the program.

Target acquisition by Auto plotter (ARP-10)

1. Conditions for manual acquisition

Within 9 scans, the target must be detected near the cursor position.
Target echo must be smaller than land echo (800 m or less in the radial or circumference direction)
at the front-end processor.
Target must be within acquisition area: 0.1 to 16 nm.
The number of acquired targets in not as many as 10, including the target automatically acquired.
No signal error (TRIG, HD, BP, VIDEO, GYRO) shall be detected.
2. Conditions for automatical acquisition
The target must be detected for five consecutive scans within the automatic acquisition area.
Target echo must be smaller than land echo (800 m or less in the radial or circumference direction)
at the front end processor.
Target must be within acquisition area: 2.0 to 2.5 nm and 45oeach side of heading line.
The number of acquired targets in not as many as 10, including the target manually acquired.
No signal error (TRIG, HD, BP, VIDEO, GYRO) shall be detected.
3. Automatic tracking
A tracking target is judged as a lost target when no return is received for nine consecutive sweeps.
When the system detects a loss of a tracking target, the target symbol becomes a flashing diamond.
A lost target will be reacquired and tracked when acquisition condition again becomes satisfactory.
Automatic tracking is discontinued when the target moves out of the acquisition range (less than
0.1 nm or greater than 16 nm).

Target discrimination
A target measuring about 800 m or more in the radial or circumferential direction is regarded as
a landmass and not acquired or tracked. Echoes smaller than about 800 m are regarded as true
target.

ARPA target acquisition and Tracking (ARP-17)

1. Conditions for manual acquisition

An echo from target must be received for three consecutive sweeps and scans within the acquisition
area.
The target echo must be smaller than the and echo data (at the front end processor).
A target must be within the acquisition area : 0.2 to 32 nm.
The ARPA can acquire 20 targets.
No signal error (TRIG, HD, BP, VIDEO, gyro) shall be detected.
2. Conditions for automatic acquisition
An echo from target must be received for three consecutive sweeps, and seven consecutive scans
within the acquisition area.
The target echo must be smaller than land echo data (at the front-end processor).
The target must be within acquisition area: 0.1 to 32 nm (or 24 nm) depending on initial setting.
Target echoes behind a land echo within the acquisition area cannot be acquired automatically.
20 targets can be automatically acquired.
No signal error (TRIG, HD, BP, VIDEO, gyro) shall be detected.
3. Automatic tracking
A tracked target is judged as a lost target when no return is received for nine consecutive scans.
When the system detects a lost target, LOST TARGET appears on the display and the ARPA
symbol blinks.
A lost target will be reacquired and tracked when acquisition condition again becomes satisfactory.
Automatic tracking is discontinued when the target moves out of the acquisition range (less than
0.1 nm or greater than 32 nm).
An acquired and tracked target, which moves behind a land echo, will be declared as a lost target.

Block Diagram Power

DC Power Supply Circuit (03P9223)

The power supply circuit consists of a main-inverter, a sub-inverter, and a protectors. A P.F
(Power Failure) signal of Low or 0V is generated when the main-inverter cannot work
normally. This signal is sent to the RP-17 and all data is stored before shutdown.

Main-inverter
When the power switch is pressed, +12V regulator Q5 starts operating, and power is applied to
the input voltage detector and switching regulator control circuit.
The switching regulator is turned on with the input voltage of 21.6 V or more, and turned off
when the input voltage is 19 V or less. The main-inverter derives +/-12 V from the input voltage.

Sub-inverter
The sub-inverter derives +115 V for the CRT circuit from +/-12 V, output of main-inverter. +5 V
and +32 V for tuning control is generated by a regulator from +12 V.

Protector
The protector activates when the input voltage is lower than 19 V or higher than 43 V. The
protector in the power supply line for antenna motor trips when the current is 8 A or more for
more than 2.5 seconds. The TX-HV protector circuit is turned on when 8 A flows on the +12 V
line. The short circuit protector for +115 V is provided in the sub-inverter.

normally. This signal is sent to the RP-17 and all data is stored before shutdown.

Main-inverter
When the power switch is pressed, +12V regulator, Q5 starts operating, and power is applied to
the input voltage detector and switching regulator control circuit.
The switching regulator is turned on with the input voltage of 85 V or more. The main-inverter
derives +/-12 V. The switching frequency is adjusted by VR1 to 22.5 kHz.

Sub-inverter
The sub-inverter derives +115 V for the CRT circuit from +/-12 V, output of main-inverter. +5 V
and +32 V for tuning control is generated by a regulator from +12 V.

Protector
The protector activates when the input voltage is higher than 135 to 150 V (for 110 V sets),
turning off relay K2. The rush current protector, Q11 controls the current which flows into
smoothing capacitors. The Q11 is bypassed when the transformer T1 outputs the voltage
designed. The protector in the power supply line for antenna motor trips when the current is 8 A
or more for more than 2.5 seconds. The TX-HV protector circuit is turned on when 8 A flows on
the +12 V line. The short circuit protector for +115 V is provided in the sub-inverter.

2.3 Scanner Unit
General
New cast aluminum scanner gearbox and new series of streamlined antenna are employed on the
FR-2115 and FR-2125 radars. These are not compatible with the traditional Furuno scanner
gearbox and radiator used for a long period. The mounting dimensions are remained unchanged.

Radiator
A feeder waveguide is built-in the radiator XN-12 AF, XN-20 AF and XN-24 AF for ease-
installation. The XN-20 AF and XN-24 AF are the same electrical characteristic with XN-3 A
and XN-4 A respectively.

Gear Box
The mounting dimensions, the size of the gear box, and cabling layout have not been changed
from the traditional Furuno radars. Changed is the radiator mounting bracket for a new radiator.
The gear box can be equipped with a motor of either 24 rpm or 42 rpm type.

RF Unit
The 10 kW and 25 kW RF units are the same in size. The magnetron of 25 kW is a new type,
smaller in size. The RF modulator generates short pulse 1 (S1) which has pulselength of 0.07 us
and pulse repetition rate of 3000 Hz. Traditionally, the S1 is 0.08 us and 2200 Hz.
The magnetron current monitor circuit ensures a defective magnetron being found easily. When
the magnetron is short- or open-circuited, the magnetron current detector reads 1 to 1.5 V.

Chapter 3. ADJUSTMENT

Hazardous Voltage

This equipment uses high voltage electricity which can SHOCK, BURN
or cause DEATH.
Always make sure the electrical power is turned off before attempting to
change a component or inspecting the inside of the equipment. A
residual charge may exist in capacitors, even with the equipment turned
off. Always short all supply lines to the chassis with an insulated
screwdriver or a similar tool before touching the circuit.

Working on the Scanner Unit Mast

Work on the scanner unit mast is dangerous, and doubly so if the proper
precautions are not taken.
1. Post an appropriate warning sign near the display unit to indicate that
work on the scanner unit is being performed, to prevent accidental
application of the power to the scanner unit.
2. Wear a safety helmet and always be aware of where the scanner
radiator is.

Chapter 4. MAINTENACE

Hazardous Voltage

This equipment uses high voltage electricity which can SHOCK, BURN or
cause DEATH.
