Read-Aloud Key Points

SWBAT make text-to-self connections wrong in the story. Readers make text-to-
about the problem in the story and their self connection by thinking about what is
own lives. happening in the story and seeing how it is
similar to their life.

How? Readers make text-to-self

connections by thinking about what is
happening in the story and similar
experiences that they have had in their own
life in order to understand the problem in a
story.

Why? Great readers always stop and think

as they read! Something the story or text
reminds the reader of something in his or
her own life.

Key Vocabulary
Crumpled to ball up or crush
Alejandro crumpled a sheet of
paper.

In the story, Ramon crumpled up

the drawing and threw it across the
room.

Energized to be charged with

lots of energy to power
Today, the students are energized
with lots of energy!

Ramon felt light and energized.

Capture catch or to take hold of

something
I love to capture butterflies in my
net at the park.

It was a feeling that even ish words

and ish drawings could not
capture.
Before Reading Questions:
o How many of you are
artists? What are some of
your favorite things to
draw?
o How many of you think that
your pictures are good
enough to be in a museum?
o What is one thing you're
really good at? Can you do
that without ever making
any mistakes? How should
people react when they're
not perfect at something?

Say: Today, we will be reading a story

about a boy who wants to be the perfect
drawer. But he begins to become dismayed
when his drawings are less than perfect and
to let out his frustration he crumples up his
artwork and throws it on the floor.
Interestingly without the young boys
knowledge the sister is picking up the
balled up pieces of paper and bringing
them to a secret place.

Lets make a prediction. Where do you

think the sister is bringing her brothers
crumpled up artwork? What is she doing
with the crumpled up artwork?

(Call on three students raising a silent hand

and sitting criss-cross applesauce to make a
prediction. Write each prediction on the
board.)

Reading comprehension questions are

included in the text.
.

Say: Now, that we have finished our story

we must check our predictions from the
beginning of the story. Were our
predictions correct? Why or why not?

(Call on three students raising a silent hand

and sitting criss-cross applesauce to explain
each prediction.)

Good job checking your predictions!

What does it mean to create art ish-fully:?

(Trying your hardest or best to draw
something.)

Say: When Ramon finds all his artwork in

his sisters room he feels energized and less
of a burden to draw what he feels,
Thinking -ishly allowed his ideas to flow
freely and make beautiful pieces of art.
Now, we as a class will have the
opportunity to create beautiful pieces of
artwork with crumpled sheets of paper.

This year when writing or

reading you should work
ishfully being as fearless and
magnificent, as you can be.

Listen and watch carefully to the example,

so you can also create your masterpiece for
the crumpled art gallery.

You may begin creating your masterpiece.

Once you are finished put your paintbrush
away and sit in a five star sit and I will
come and collect your artwork for our
classroom crumpled art gallery.
