Being Humble in Our Accomplishments

Beloved missionaries of the Spain Barcelona Mission, what an amazing week we had
last week!! Our dear mission was blessed with 17 baptismsthe third largest number
of baptisms in one week since we have been here in Spain. What a tremendous
blessing from our Heavenly Father. How He must love the mission to have given this
great gift to us. Because of your hard work, devotion, obedience and persistence,
the Lord was able to guide us to this wonderful accomplishment. I am so proud of
you and am so grateful for your efforts to build Zion here in Spain. It would be very
easy to sit back on our laurels and do what Elder Zwick warned us againstdont
purr after your accomplishments!

What we cant do after this marvelous accomplishment is to sit back, admire

ourselves, pat ourselves on the back excessively, and think that it was our talent and
our ability that made it happen. Yes, we did our part in the hard work and sacrifice as
well as obedience and devotion, but without the presence of the Spirit and His
guidance, all of that would be for naught. Every baptism we have is a gift from our
Heavenly Father and it is important that we never forget that. Humble recognition of
the central role of the Holy Ghost, Savior and our Heavenly Father is most appropriate
after wonderful things happen in this great labor of bringing souls to Him.

This virtue of humility is so lacking in the world today. It is manifested best by athletes
thumping their own chest or bragging about their accomplishments or taunting
opponents when they score. That kind of pride can never be a part of missionary
work because the Spirit can not abide with a prideful, arrogant, self-centered
individual. D&C 12:8 reminds us that, And no one can assist in this work except he
shall be humble and full of love. Again, D&C 112:10 states, Be thou humble and
the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.
Mosiah was a little more blunt when he cautioned, I would that ye should
remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God and your own
nothingness The Savior loathed arrogance and feelings of superiority. In Matthew
23:12 he showed that great spiritual leaders are humble when He stated, And
whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall
be exalted.
Preach My Gospel reminds us that humility is willingness to submit to the will of the Lord
and to give the Lord the honor for what is accomplished. It includes gratitude for His
blessings and acknowledgment of your constant need for His divine help. When you
humbly trust Him and acknowledge His power and mercy, you can have the assurance
that His commandments are for your good. Humility will help you as you strive to be
obedient, to work hard, and serve selflessly. When I was on my first mission in Spanish
speaking Los Angeles in 1968, it very quickly became apparent to me that I needed the
Lord every single hour of the day. The hymn, I need thee every hour became my
anthem and it is what I sang when I knew I needed the presence of the Lord to bless me
and guide me. I learned like one of our prophets that, a missionary is only a vessel
through whom the Lord can transmit His spirit. To acquire that Spirit, a missionary must
humble himself in prayer and ask our Heavenly Father to use him to touch the hearts of
investigators.

What we can do after the Lord has blessed us with the priceless privilege of playing a
role in the baptism of someone is to not relax and not purr but just keep working harder.
Those who do that become true escalator missionaries instead of elevators missionaries.
Elevator missionaries find a great prospect for baptism and focus everything on him/her
to the exclusion of doing any finding. Thus they are like an elevator in that they take
their investigator up to the next floor and then are empty and do nothing as they
descend to pick up the next passengers. In contrast, an escalator missionary is
constantly finding, even when he/she does have a great candidate for baptism. They
never stop, just keep looking, keep finding and thus produce constantly instead of
sporadically.

Let me conclude by sharing the words of a simple poem written years ago in 1965:
Father, where shall I work today? And my love flowed warm and free.
Then He pointed me out a tiny spot and said, Tend that for me.
I answered quickly, Oh no, not that! Why, no one would ever see,
No matter how well my work was done: Not that little place for me.
And the words He spoke, they were not stern, he answered me tenderly,
Ah, little one, search that heart of thine: art thou working for them or me?
Nazareth was a little place, and so was Galilee.

May be humbly move forward in this great labor of bringing souls to our Savior is my
prayer,

Con humildad,

Presidente Merril T Dayton

Boldness vs Fearfulness

Boldness is confidence that what we have to say or do is true, right and just. Boldness is the
fearless courage to carry out the work of the Lord and do what He has called us to do. It is
often the outward evidence of inward courage.

In 3 Nephi 6:20 we read, "And there began to be men inspired from heaven and sent forth,
standing among the people in all the land, preaching and testifying boldly of the sins and
iniquities of the people, and testifying unto them concerning the redemption which the Lord
would make for his people, or in other words, the resurrection of Christ; and they did testify
boldly of his death and sufferings." All through the scriptures we see men testifying and
teaching boldly.

In Moroni 8:16, Moroni says, "Wo be unto them that shall pervert the ways of the Lord after this
manner, for they shall perish except they repent. Behold, I speak with boldness, having
authority from God; and I fear not what man can do; for perfect love casteth out all fear.

The Apostle Paul asked others to pray for him that he would be able to testify boldly.

In Ephesians 6:19-20 he says, "[Pray] for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may
open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an
ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak."

The Savior was certainly bold in correcting false doctrine and traditions (ex: throwing the
money-changers out of the temple), teaching truth wherever he went, and courageously
atoning for the sins of all mankind.

In Alma 38:12 we are told to, "Use boldness, but not overbearance; and also see that ye bridle
all your passions, that ye may be filled with love; see that ye refrain from idleness" This scripture
clearly gives us good advice. We should speak boldly, testifying but not be over bearing.
Each of us must decide how bold to be in any given situation. As we were with Elder
Dini Ciacci he shared with us his conversion story. He had investigated the church for 8 months
and then he met a new set of missionaries. They said, "We are not like the other missionaries.
We can teach you 6 lessons in three weeks and we expect people to be baptized. If you let us
teach you we'll come back. If not we won't be coming back." Talk about BOLD! Those
missionaries certainly put it out there--they were there to teach those who were serious about
getting baptized and then if they weren't serious about it, they were not going to waste their
time. Well, those missionaries taught Elder Dini Ciacci and baptized him.

We can apply boldness in missionary work by boldly and humbly speaking and testifying of the
truths of the gospel, boldly supporting others when they speak what is true, and boldly and with
a loving spirit discussing disobedience of a companion or missionary.

We are grateful for your examples of boldness as you testify about Jesus Christ. You inspire us
and lift our souls on a regular basis. We will continue to pray for you daily as you fearlessly bring
others to the Savior.
