Volunteers find plenty of rubbish on Ben Nevis to keep them busy after snow disappears from summit
The second litter sweep on Ben Nevis of 2010 attracted a solid force of returning Nevis volunteers and a couple of new ‘litter
swipers’ too. This was our first work party since the snow disappeared from the summit, so there was plenty of rubbish to fill
our bags. Ten bags of litter were collected. The haul included a number of flags, memorial stones, random winter mitts and a
copious amount of the usual offenders - tissues, bottle tops and plastic bottles. Several old nails were found in the old
observatory ruins, these were good little keep sakes – representing times gone by. The blight of banana skins continues, with
monstrous numbers on the summit, some ripe and others preserved through the winter snow pack and a high volume of skins
lining the main path up and down the hill. Bunches of uneaten bananas also bulked out the bin bags. The team saw to
dismantling stone additions to the cairns and had some good conversation with hill walkers on the summit, who were very
passionate about the mess left from hill walkers before them. The sunny weather brought out a large number of small black
Chimney Sweeper moths (Odezia Atrata), which were seen fluttering around the mountain track at the bottom quarter of the
Ben. The John Muir Trust Tuesday 6th July, 2010
