Little Lamb, who made thee?

Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life, & bid thee feed
By the stream & o'er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight;
Softest clothing, woolly, bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice?
Little Lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?

THE PYTHAGOREAN NUMBER SYSTEM

THE OGDOAD

I am One that transforms into Two,

I am Two that transforms into Four,
I am Four that transforms into Eight.
8
After this I am One again.
Egyptian creation myth

Pythagorean thought was recorded only by disciples of this great master

teacher. What has been handed down on the ogdoad is sketchy at best, but
the morsels presented here are still worth pondering.

The definition of a cube is a number multiplied by itself 3 times, that is,

1x1x1=1
2x2x2=8

According to the Pythagoreans, the ogdoad, or the number 8, was sacred

because it is the number of the cube, the form of which has eight corners.

The ogdoad was the only evenly-even number under 10 (1-2-4-8-4-2-1),

that is, the number 8 is evenly divided into two 4s, each 4 is divided into
two 2s, and each 2 is divided into two 1s, which reestablishes the Monad.

Another curious attribute of the number 8 is that it shares something in

common with zero. Zero and the number 8 are the only two figures that
can be written over and over again without lifting pen from paper.

On its side, the number 8 is the sign of infinity.

1
Zenith News Notes No 85

The Pythagoreans considered the ogdoad to be a mysterious number

associated with the Eleusinian Mysteries of Greece. They called it the little
holy number. It is also said that the ogdoad derived its form partly from
the intertwining serpents on the Caduceus of Hermes and partly from the
serpentine motion of the celestial bodies.

Key 19
We are told that the Great Work of Alchemy is
performed by the operation of the Sun and the
Moon with the aid of Mercury.

The Sun is represented in tarot principally by key

19, - with the Moon by key 2 and Mercury by key
1.

On the Tree of Life key 19 is the 30th path of

wisdom joining Yesod, sphere of the Moon, the
vital or animal soul, which we share with all living,
to Hod, sphere of Mercury and the intellect.

The sphere of activity of the Sun on the Tree is Tiphareth, the yellow
sphere at the very centre of the Tree. This sphere is the Christ
Consciousness, but is also Ben (BN) the Son and Melekh (MLK) the King,
as well as Messiach (MShYCh) the messiah, the redeemer. It is the centre
sphere related to Ruach (RVCh) (or Prana in the East), which is the Life
Breath. (Ruach on the Tree of Life encompasses the sepheroth Chesed to
Yesod, and is centred in Tiphareth). Ruach has two currents, the Sun and
Moon in alchemical terminology.

The 30th path of wisdom is called the collective intelligence. The word
collective is Kellawliy (KLLY), which also means all-inclusive. It adds
through Gematria to 90, which is also the valued of Melekh (MLK) King,
Jachin (YKYN), one of the pillars before Solomons temple and which
means, strong one, unity. It is also the value of Mawlak (MLK) to
administer, to reign, to rule, and Lamech (LMK), powerful. And finally
goalenu (GALNV), our redeemer.

So when we use this Alchemical sun to complete the Great Work we will
be the King, the strong one, in unity, to rule and reign in power and we
will be the redeemer. We are told that the Great Work or Magnum Opus is
the creation of man by himself. It is the full and complete conquest which
he can make of his faculties and his future; and it is the perfect
emancipation of his will.

Zenith News Notes No 85

Mercury on the Tree is the middle pillar of Mildness, the Moon is the
Pillar of Severity (Binah, Geburah and Hod), and the Sun is the pillar of
Mercy (Chokmah, Chesed and Netzach).

So with Key 19 we are concerning ourselves with the grey, blue and green
spheres, as well as the yellow.

The Emerald Tablet is an Alchemical work about the Great Work, the First
Matter, and the Philosophers Stone, or stone of the wise. It reads:

True, without falsehood, certain and most true, that which is above is as
that which is below, and that which is below is as that which is above, for
the performance of the miracles of the One Thing. And as all things are
from One, by the mediation of one, so all things have their birth from this
One Thing by adaptation. The Sun is its father, the Moon its mother, the
Wind carries it in its belly, its nurse is the Earth. This is the father of all
perfection, or consummation of the whole world. Its power is integrating if
it be turned into earth.

Thou shalt separate the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross,
suavely, and with great ingenuity. It ascends from earth to heaven and
descends again to earth, and receives the powers of the superiors and of the
inferiors, So thou has the glory of the whole world; therefore let all
obscurity flee before thee. This is the strong force of all forces,
overcoming every subtle and penetrating every solid thing. So the world
was created. Hence were all wonderful adaptations, of which this is the
manner. Therefore am I called Hermes Trismegistus, having the three parts
of the philosophy of the whole world. What I have to tell is completed,
concerning the Operation of the Sun.

It says the Sun is its father. The Father is Chokmah on the Tree, which is
the sphere of the zodiac. Thus it represents the 12 signs of the zodiac. Each
incarnation we take on a particular one, which becomes our sun sign for
that incarnation. This is the main area we focus on in an incarnation. But
remember that the other signs still play through us in varying degrees of
power, depending on the planets situated in them and also from our work
here. One of the goals of our work here at this temple, through the use of

4
September 2009

Tarot, is to be able to express through our personality all 12 signs in their

most positive expression.

The Emerald Tablet ends with What I have to tell is completed,

concerning the Operation of the Sun. So it is telling us everything there is
to know about this alchemical Sun

These alchemical terms hint at what they are referring to, as no words can
describe with absolute meaning what they are talking about, unless you
already know it.

The Great Work is called the work of the Sun in the Emerald Tablet. We
live and move and have our being inside the physical Sun. Its rays extend
far out into space, and even when they are no longer felt as heat they are
still extending out. As the Emerald Tablet stated This is the strong force
of all forces, overcoming every subtle and penetrating every solid thing.
You are the life of the consciousness of the sun in a specialized and unique
way and you already have the strong force of all forces.

Alchemical Gold or Sun is the absolute and supreme reason, truth Key 4
you have within you the power which constitutes creates. It is the
substance of every physical thing you know. The Emperor in Key 4 is the
ruler, looking at the flow of water, which in tarot is always a symbol for
consciousness. He is ruling the flow of his consciousness.

The living Gold is the radiant energy of the sun in its physical
manifestation and this is truly the First Matter of the Great Work. It is a
fluidic vibration, a living fluidic radiance.

It enters the human organism through the Cardiac plexus located at the
back of the heart, and is where the One Ego is located and where the
undifferentiated consciousness enters the field of personality.

The nerve cells of the Sun centre charge the bloodstream, as blood passes
through the heart, with a current of radiant energy, solar force, living Gold,
living fluidic radiance. Consciously this can be increased with the aid of
Mercury.

5
Zenith News Notes No 85

To live in health we need proper amounts of sunlight, water, air and food.
This is Sun (key 19) alchemically for sunlight, Moon (key 2) for water,
Mercury/Ruach (Keys 1 and 0) for air, and Earth (Key 9) for food. We
need to get all of these in the right quantities and proportions, both in their
physical as well as their more meta-physical aspects. The Great Work does
have a physiological aspect and outcome, as well as more subtle ones. But
just as the end of the Tree of Life is in Mulkuth the Kingdom, the physical
world, and is the fruit of the Tree, so too are our physical vehicles the end
result or fruit of our more subtle vehicles and the changes that originate in
them.

In key 19 we see the symbol of a sun with 8 salient or pointed rays, which
represents the Alchemical Sun principle.

There are 8 curved or wavy rays, which represents the Alchemical Moon
principle.

And there are 48 beams in groups of 3, which is 4 x 12 (the four Qabalistic

worlds and 12 zodiac signs), and represents the Alchemical Mercury as
#48 is the value of the word kokab (KVKB) meaning star in general or
Mercury.

The sun symbol in Key 19 therefore represents The Sun and the Moon
with the aid of Mercury. And it has a face to show that it is living and
conscious. The Alchemical sun (and also Moon and Mercury) are living
conscious aspects of the one Life-Breath Ruach, which is centred in the
Human Ego as shown on the Tree. (Chesed to Yesod) and is a
specialization of the One, Eheyeh (AHYH), the I AM, the Indivisible,
situated in Kether at the top of the Tree and also therefore of the
Alchemical Earth or Ain Suph Aur, the three veils of the infinite, the no-
thing limitless light, which is the soil from which the tree grows.

There are 5 sunflowers shown on top of the wall of stone. They represent
the five stages of evolution mineral, animal, man and super-man (super
meaning above or beyond).

The sunflower, which is not quite open, and which is facing away from the
children and toward the sun, is the next stage of our evolution beyond

6
September 2009

natural man and represents the Great Work. It is only just beginning to
open in mankind, as the bud suggests. But as we face more toward the
spiritual sun, it will open with aid of the energies flowing from this
spiritual sun. This bud is not facing toward the children, as the other four
flowers are, as even though we are offspring of the spiritual sun, we are
still children, and have not developed our full potential of the spiritual sun.

This is the force you use in every thought, feeling and action. Every force
in the universe is an adaptation of this one Life-power, as stated in the
Emerald Tablet.

We use this force, which is termed in Alchemy as Sun, now, just as we

have always. We have been built to use this force, to utilize it, to create.
But we are now ready to use it more wisely, so we can complete the Great
Work, to create a vehicle that can utilize higher vibrational aspects of the
One Life-force. This as represented by Key 19 as the 5th stage of spiritual
unfoldment. The other four stages being shown in Keys 15 through 18.
Our goal is to become unobstructed vehicles for the power of the One Life.

The wall behind the children is made of stone and has 5 levels and then the
cap stone. The 5 levels allude to the 5 stages of evolution as do the 5
sunflowers and also to the 5 senses.

Stone in Hebrew is Ehben (ABN), Aleph, Beth and Nun, so in Tarot is

Keys 0 The Fool, 1 The Magcian and 13 Death.

0, 1 and 13 add to 14, which is the value of the word zahab (ZHB), which
means Gold or light, and is another alchemical term for the Sun principle.

14 is the number 4 and 1 suggesting the sovereign ruling reason of the

Constituting Intelligence of the Emperor and the mercurial intellect of the
Magician.

Alchemical God or Sun is the absolute and supreme reason, truth. You
have within you the power which constitutes, which creates. It is the
substance of every physical thing you know. The Emperor in Key 4 is the
ruler, looking at the flow of water, which in tarot is always a symbol for
consciousness. He is ruling the flow of his consciousness.

7
Zenith News Notes No 85

We are told that the Philosophers Stone is nothing other than gold
digested to the highest degree. Key 9 assigned to Virgo, where Mercury is
both exalted and the ruling planet, relates to the small intestines in the
body. This is where we assimilate what is required by the body from the
food we eat. This process of assimilation can be enhanced by the use of
our self-consciousness, our Mercury. We can then start to assimilate more
of this potable gold, the alchemical sun, from the food we eat. When we
decided what food we want to eat, and when sitting down to eat it, we can
think about extracting more of this essence, which will give this suggestion
over to our sub-consciousness, which controls the building of our body,
and therefore also the building of the Philosophers Stone.

The Alchemical Sun is in the food we eat, in the air we breathe, in the
water we drink and in the earth we touch, it is all around us, yet is much
more subtle than any of these.

Key 18, by its title The Moon, relates it to sub-consciousness. It is the

Corporeal Intelligence. 18 reduces to 9, which is Virgo and the small
intestines. Every cell in your body is an individual consciousness and
responds to what we think. The respond to your thinking and therefore can
enhance the body building process.

There are 13 orange Yods connecting the Sun to the children. Orange is
the colour of Mercury, Yod is the letter of Key 9 and Virgo, and 13 is
Scorpio through the tarot key. 13 is the value of the Hebrew words for
unity and love (AChD and AHBH). Here, through the colour orange, this
symbol is being linked to alchemical Mercury, our thinking processes;
through Yod to the Virgo area of the small intestines and alchemical Earth
(related to the 3 Veils of the Infinite, the Ain Suph Aur); and to the
reproductive creative energy of Scorpio.

The children, representing self and sub consciousness, are of equal height.
We are told that he secret of the Great Work is equilibrium, therefore also
balance and harmony.

In the Book of Tokens we read It is the Sun of Life and Light, shining
through the twelve tribes of heaven, and spreading their power through the

8
September 2009

Tree of Life, to make all things new. Yet does every beam of that Sun Cast
a shadow also, for in all creation are light and darkness mixed, and their
equilibrium is the mystery of mystery.

We can use this key to enhance our total consciousness, both on the self
and sub conscious levels to perfect our vehicle and confect the
Philosophers stone and complete the Great work in Mulkuth to bring
about heaven to earth.

I found that the Epilogos, The Meditation on Malkuth from the Book of
Tokens, to be related to what this talk has been about, so I will finish by
quoting some extracts from this.

I AM the Clarion call of the Beyond, reverberating myself, throughout

the Garden of Delight. I am thy Breath of Life, O child of Eden, pervading
thee with the perfumed fragrance of my Spirit. Thy very Self am I, O
Israel, and Self of ALL THAT IS.

Deluded by the illusion of personal independence, the uninstructed mistake

the descent of My Power from the Life Breath of RUACH for an ascent of
power from my manifestations in MALKUTH.

Know ye that never does power have its beginning in that which is below.
It doth ascend from earth to Heaven, even as Hermes saith, and from
Heaven it descendeth again to earth. Yet remember that whatsoever the
Sages write, is always veiled, lest the profane burn themselves with the
fires they know not how to direct.

Dost thou aspire to the height of the Sphere of the Sun? Worthy is thine
aspiration. But many are called and few are chosen, for only if thou canst
understand the written word with thine heart, canst thou perceive that even
thy aspiration cometh not from the level of GUPH and NEPHESH, but is
truly the reflection of My descending power from RUACH.

Always then is aspiration like the reflected image of the Sun in a glass,
which, if it striketh straight into the eyes, seemeth to be the Sun itself. No
man riseth to RUACH by his own power.

Zenith News Notes No 85

Yet my Kingdom of ADONAI is not the kingdom of this worlds illusion;

and the bodies of the servants of ADONAI must be freed from the illusion
ere they may serve as transparent channels for the Light which descendeth
from Above.

The Great Work directeth itself always toward the building of the Temple
of ADONAI, and in its earlier stages there are needs which do not continue
throughout the building process. Yet men mistake the scaffolding for the
building itself, and thus pay idolatrous reverence to old rules which have
no longer any useful purpose. Watch therefore, O ye who would rule as the
Lord ruleth, lest ye usurp the rights of the Lord. His and His alone, is the
Temple, and ye who are concerned with the building are not is owners.
Not thine but Mine is the work. Not thine but Mine is the Temple; for Me
and Me only is it planned and built, and mine are the ordinances
established for thy guidance in the service of the Light.

Mine is the Substance of all that cometh into manifestation through the
thought, or word, or action of any of Mine instruments. Never shall they
who remain deluded by the illusion of separateness become clear channels
for the Outpouring of My Will, until all the follies of thine and mine
are cleared out by the irresistible downpouring of My Power.

So this thy body is the instrument whereon may be played the Song of
Life. Nay, it is more than this; for on this harp of ten thousand strings, the
wind of the Spirit moveth ever, and soundeth night and day the melodies
and harmonies of that Eternal Song.

This thy body, O child of earth and sky, is truly the heavenly Vision of the
Goodness of the Eternal. This thy body is the Palace of the King; This thy
body is the manifested world of God and man; This thy body is the
seamless robe of ADONAI. For I am thy Lord, and the Lord and His
Temple are ONE.

Study One Lesson for a Week - Why?

No accomplishment is ever made without study, whether it be a physical

skill or in the acquisition of knowledge needed in other pursuits.
At the outset we say that a week should be given to each lesson. Bright
minds will say A whole week! One hour is sufficient for me. When we
become an Associate member of this Order, we receive regular mailings of
lessons as a privilege of membership. This is in terms of the very
foundation of this Order, and reflects a wisdom gathered from the past and
knowledge of what can be accomplished in this present age, or any age for
that matter.
In earlier times, there were but few centres of the Secret Teachings and
great distances were involved in reaching them. The fact that today we
can receive the teachings by mail does not mean that no further real effort
is needed.
Even in viewing the spectacle of modern technology, wonderful as it is,
and to some in serious conflict with the environment, the knowledge did
not suddenly appear. It evolved over several centuries of primary research
and labour of questioning souls in many nations and has resulted in
remarkable attainments. Similarly, knowledge of the real potential that
lies within every soul has also grown over a long time and to attain to it
requires perseverance and dedication.
Events either within a nation or between them are precipitated within the
evolution of government from primeval tribal ways to what exists today.
Given a choice, there would be but few who would desire tribal
government. Thus we acknowledge benefits even should they be sustained
in imperfection.
The perfection of the human soul insofar that it can be reached in any one
incarnation is not different in principle to the collective efforts within a
nation. The spiritual aspirant seeks perfection within his thinking-feeling
nature and this takes him into the course of a greater evolution - to know
relationships within the Cosmos as portrayed in Key 21. So great a
concept is exposed to the tests that life presents. The figurative Garden of
Eden is guarded by two Cherubim, each with a flaming sword preventing
the passage of imperfection which otherwise would be confirmed in
eternal livingness.

11
Zenith News Notes No 85

It is the universal experience of members that on going back in the lessons,

the feeling is that they have never seen them before. This is because the
words are seen from a new position of growth already reached. The writer
once said to Ann Davies that the feeling of not knowing the work well
enough caused him to be going back rather than keep pace with the
lessons. Her reply was emphatic - Keep pace with the lessons because
you cannot know it all or otherwise you would already be a Master of
Wisdom.
We have all learnt enough of the fact that the subconscious mind is
amenable to persuasion and is able to affect without effort our thinking-
feeling reactions and our grasp of unfolding potential of our beingness.
Persuasion in terms of the ancient Holy Qabalah and the Sacred Tarot are
best absorbed in the regular beat of one lesson a week and meditation
thereon.

God grant me the Serenity to

accept the things I cannot
change...
Courage to change the things I
can...
And Wisdom to know the
difference

KEY 5 THE HIEROPHANT

by Paul Foster Case

Hearing is the function assigned to the Hierophant. The Hebrew letter

Vau means nail, and is also the conjunction and. The ornament, hanging
from the crown of the Hierophant and passing behind his is ears, is a
conventionalized yoke. A yoke is something that joins together, again
symbolizing union.

The Hindu word for union is Yoga. This card symbolizes Interior
Hearing, or the development of intuition by certain practices of Yoga.

This that we call interior hearing is the real inner

teaching, coming from your own Inner Self, your
true Teacher. That Self is represented by the
Hierophant. In this connection we must caution
you that the true interior hearing is not the
negative, lower psychic types of clairaudience.
The difference is readily distinguished by the
quality of what is heard. Intuition is above
reason, but never contrary to it, and it never
urges you to do an unethical or selfish thing.

The pillars represent the Law of Polarity, or the

interplay of the pairs of opposites. Their capitals
show a ball and socket pattern and an acorn
surrounded by oak leaves. This symbolizes the union of opposites.

The design of the wards of the crossed keys is a bell. This symbolizes
sound vibration used in hearing, and is also a hint that sound has a
practical value in unlocking the gates of your Inner Temple. The two
ministers who kneel before the Hierophant represent desire and
knowledge, as indicated by the roses and lilies on their garments.
