Keywords : teaching, reading comprehension, contextual guessing technique

English is international language. The students need to learn how to use


English in communication. The teaching of English should be emphasized on
teaching of reading skill. In this research, the researcher wants to improve the
students ablity in reading comprehension. One of them is by using contextual
guessing technique to the eight year students in A class of SMP Negeri 2 Kabuh The
objective of this study is to know the application of the usage of contextual guessing
technique in teaching reading comprehension at the eight year in A class of SMP
Negeri 2 Kabuh in academic year 2009-2010. This study also to know how the
teacher evaluate students achievement in reading comprehension by using contextual
guessing technique.
This research uses descriptive method, which refers to content of
presentation and students evaluation. It was conducted from October 2009 to
February 2010. Three ways that used in collecting data in this study. They are :
observation, evaluation, and documentation. The direct observation method was
conducted by share be passive participant in class. The subject of the study are 44
students of the eight year in A class of SMP Negeri 2 Kabuh in first semester in
academic year 2009-2010.
The application of the usage of contextual guessing technique in teaching
reading comprehension at the eight year in A class of SMP Negeri 2 Kabuh in
academic year 2009-2010 uses eight strategies. They are : make a mark on the target
words, guess the meaning of a word is through the relationship the words around it,
synonym, antonym, discourse function (cause and effect), the purpose or use of an
object, summarizing or conclusion, and true or false statements. Portofolio used to
assess the students achievement. The result of assessment is good. This case can seen
from analyzing of students total mean score is higher than standard minimum score.
It means that there are many students that get good score than total of students that
get less score.
