1. Write the relationship between shear modulus and youngs modulus of elasticity.
2. Draw Mohrs circle for the state of pure shear in a strained body and mark the salient points in it.
3. Differentiate elasticity and elastic limit.
4. Obtain the relation between E and K.
5. Define Principal planes.
6. Describe the Lames theorem
7. List out the Assumptions used to made theory of pure torsion.
8. Define radial pressure in thin cylinder
9. Name the stresses develop in the cylinder
10. How do you classify a cylinder or a shell into be thick or thin.
PART-B (5x13=65)
11.a) A steel rod of 3cm diameter is enclosed centrally in a hollow copper tube of external diameter 5cm
and internal diameter 4cm. The composite bar is then subjected to an axial pull of 45000N. If the length
of each bar is equal to 15cm, determine i) the stress in the rod and tube ii) load carried by each bar.
Take Es = 2.1 X 105 N/mm2, Ec = 1.1 X 105 N/mm2.

(or)
11.b) One steel bar and copper bar are fixed at the top end with a spacing of 600mm and at the
bottom end a rigid cross bar is fixed for equal elongation and a load P 50KN is applied in a location
for equal elongation of the two bar. Find the location and the stresses in the rods. Length of the
bars, 900mm diameter of the steel rod is 20mm and the diameter of the copper rod 30mm. Es = 2.1
X 105 N/mm2, Ec = 1.1 X 105 N/mm2.
12 a) Calculate the modulus of rigidity and bulk modulus of a cylindrical bar of diameter 30mm
and of length 1.5m. If the longitudinal strain in the bar during the tensile stress is four times the
lateral strain. Find the change in volume, when the bar is subjected to a hydrostatic pressure of
100 N/mm2. E = 1 x 105 N/mm2.
Or
12 b) A solid circular bar of diameter 20mm when subjected to an axial pull of 40 KN and
change in diameter was found to 0.003822mm. Find the Poissons ratio, modulus of elasticity &
bulk modulus if the shear modulus of the material of the bar is 76.923 GPa.
13 a) The principal stresses at a point across two perpendicular planes are 75 MN/mm 2 tensile
and 35 MN/mm2 compressive. Find normal, tangential stresses and resultant stress and its
obliquity on a plane at 200 with major principal plane.
Or
13 b) At a point is strained material the resultant intensity of stress across the horizontal plane is
802 MPa tensile inclined at 450 clockwise to its normal. The normal component the intensity of
stress across the vertical plane is 20 Mpa compressive. Locate the principal planes and find the
stresses across them.
14 a) A cylindrical vessel whose ends are closed by means of rigid flange plate is made of steel
plate 3mm thick. the length and the internal diameter of the vessel are 50cm and 25cm
respectively. Determine the longitudinal and hoop stresses in the cylindrical shell due to an
internal fluid pressure of 3 N/mm2. Also calculate the increases in length, diameter and volume
of the vessel. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2 & = 0.3
Or
14.b) Derive the Lames equations of a thick cylindrical shell

15.a) A hollow shaft with diameter ratio 3/5 is required to transmit 450kw at 120 rpm. The
shearing stress in the shaft must not exceed 60 N/mm 2 and the twist in a length of 2.5m is not to
exceed 10. Calculate the maximum external diameter of the shaft . C = 80 KN/mm2.
Or
15.b) A solid shaft subjected to a torque of 45 KNM. If the angle of twist is 0.5 0 per meter length
of the shaft and the shear stress is not to exceed 90 MN/m 2, find the suitable diameter for the
shaft, maximum shear stress and maximum shear strain in the shaft G=80 GN/m2.

PART C (1x15)

16.a) A steel rod 5m long and 30mm in diameter is subjected to an axial tensile load of 50 KN.
Determine change is length, diameter and volume of the rod. E = 2 x 105 N/mm2, = 0.25
Or
16.b) A bar of cross section 8mm X 8mm is subjected to an axial pull of 7000N. The lateral
dimension of the bar is found to be changed to 7.9985mm x 7.9985mm. If the modulus of
rigidity of the materials is 0.8 X 105 N/mm2. Determine the possions ratio and modulus of
elasticity.
