eFamiliarization Checklist - New User

Thank you for purchasing an Agilent GC/MS system solution. This checklist is used to provide a guide on
what aspects of your instrument and software that will be covered when Familiarization service has
been included in your order. This checklist will be completed at the end of the service and provided to
you as a record of the familiarization.

Customer Information
Familiarization is intended to give operators a basic overview of the operation and maintenance of
new instruments and software systems and is not designed to substitute for a full operator-training
course.
Further training, advice and consultation can be found at www.agilent.com/chem/education.
The manuals/media delivered with the system will be used as a guide during familiarization. Please
make sure they are available.
Please confirm that checklist tasks are covered during familiarization.
Specifically Not Included in the Familiarization service (unless explicitly ordered):
Training on basic PC operation, peripherals and/or operating systems.
Training to groups larger than four people.
Customized method/application development and/or testing of customer samples.
Macro programming, customized reports, databases etc. unless explicitly stated.
Fundamentals/theory of instrument techniques unless explicitly stated.

Service Engineers Responsibilities


Install all user manuals and tools relevant to the system before starting Familiarization:
Agilent GC and GC/MS User Manuals & Tools (DVD)
Agilent GC/MS Software Information and Manuals (USB)
Provide a printed copy of checklist to the customer to look at during familiarization.
Discuss the familiarization topics and agree upon the focus areas based on the customer's level of
experience with GC/MS:
1. New User: Individuals who are new to Agilent GC/MS systems.
2. Update User: Individuals who have used previous generations of Agilent GC/MS systems.
Only complete sections or pages that relate to the customer's level of experience and system that has
been installed.
Complete empty fields with the relevant information.
Complete the relevant checkboxes in the checklist using a X or tick mark in the checkbox.
Check the "Not Applicable" check boxes or specify "N/A" (where appropriate) to indicate optional
services or product functionality not included.
Order of tasks being delivered is not as critical as covering of all applicable tasks.
Complete the "Service Review" and "Service Completion" sections together with the customer.

Additional Instruction Notes


Familiarization is broken out into two separate checklists based on the user's experience level. Use
only the checklist that matches the customer's level of experience with GC/MS. If time is available

New User Familiarization


New User: Individuals who are new to Agilent GC/MS systems.

Instrument Start-up and Overview


Give brief overview of the GC/MS system (7890B GC and 5977 Series MSD). If an ALS is installed,
give a brief overview of the Injector, Tray, and Controller.
Identify associated hardware and LAN interface connections, including power, gases, pumps, PC
keyboard, mouse, monitor, and printer.
Show how to turn on and pump down the MSD.
Give overview of MSD local control panel (LCP) Status and Menu modes.

Software Start-up and Overview


Show the file directories for MassHunter GC/MS Data Acquisition software for storing data, method,
and sequence files.
Show where to access user manuals, Online Help, demonstration videos, release notes, and software
status bulletins.
Show how to configure the GC/MS instrument for data acquisition.
Demonstrate how to start MassHunter GC/MS Data Acquisition software.
Give overview of the Instrument Control user interface.

Tune MSD in EI Mode


Explain importance of tuning
Tune the MSD using Autotune (Atune.U) in EI mode.
Evaluate the tune report.
Run the Tune Evaluation.
Show how to track MSD tune history with Tune Plot.
Show where to access Factory Tune Report specific for the customer's MSD.

Create/Edit Method
Edit the acquisition parameters from the default GC/MS method.
Save the changes as a new method.

Run Method
Show how to run a method to acquire GC/MS data for a sample.
Show how to monitor run status and messages.
Show how to toggle the scale in the chromatogram and spectrum.

Create/Edit Sequence
Explain difference between method and sequence.
Edit the sequence parameters from the default sequence.
Save changes as a new sequence.

Run Sequence
Show how to run a sequence.
Show how to view the Sequence Table during a sequence run.
Show how to pause and restart a paused sequence.

Switch from EI to CI Mode


Section Not Applicable. CI source is not ordered.
Vent the MSD.
Remove EI ion source.
Install CI interface tip seal.
Install CI ion source.
Show the location of CI flow control module, CI calibration valve assembly, and reagent gas line.
Pump down the MSD.
Bake out the MSD.
Load and run PCI Autotune (PCICH4.U).
Discuss about NCI Autotune (NCICH4.U).

Maintenance and Diagnostics


Show where to access the Troubleshooting and Maintenance Manual.
Discuss when to perform maintenance on the MSD and vacuum system.
Describe how to set Early Maintenance Feedback (EMF) counters.
Show how to find replacement parts using Parts Finder.

Service Review
Complete the Service Engineer Comments section below, if applicable.
Explain how to log a software service call, support services available.
Perform a review of Agilent's web site and web links listed below (if internet is available).
Explain Agilent's software warranty policy.
Explain software licensing or authorization codes and registration applicable to the software.
Advise customer of additional software training options available.

Tune MSD in EI Mode


Explain the different types of tune.
Tune the MSD using Autotune (Atune.U) in EI mode.
Evaluate the tune report.

Run Sequence
Specify a vial position to start a sequence.
Examine the sequence log.
