Day 2: Introduction to Subtraction Co-Teaching Lesson Plan

Grade: First
Model: Station Teaching

Teacher 1: Coyne
Teacher 2: Major
Paraprofessional: Martin

Co-Teaching Approach: ___One Teach, One Observe/Assist __X_ Station Teaching

___Parallel Teaching ___ Alternative Teaching
___Team Teaching

Subject: First Grade Math Topic/Lesson: Subtraction within 20 Date: Fall 2017

Standard(s): CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within
10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 =
14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9);
using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12,
one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding
6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Lesson Outcomes:
I can subtract within in 20 using a number line, drawing a picture or using manipulatives.

Materials Needed:
1. Class set of iPads
2. Counting manipulatives (Ex: bears, fruits, chips)
3. Number Lines
4. Vocabulary cards, Math Toolbox Notebooks, glue sticks and scissors
5. Dry erase Boards and Markers
6. Set of 2 Dixie Cups with subtraction problems within 20 written on them. Answer on inside of
cup as a self-check.
Vocabulary:
1. Subtraction
2. Minus sign
3. Equal sign
4. Difference
5. Count back
6. Take away

station.
3. After talking about subtraction
and role playing put students into 5
groups. Because this is an
introduction lesson student will
NOT be placed by ability. Place
students according to behavior and
good working pairs.

Lesson Activities: Station 1- (Teacher 1) In this station See Teacher 1 Box for
the teacher will be working with a small All Station Lesson
group of students rolling large foam Plans
dice to make subtraction problems using
manipulatives to solve. All students will
record each equation on their dry erase
board and use the manipulatives to find
the answer. Students will take turns
rolling the dice. Teacher 1 will watch
and observe each students equation on
the white boards as well as their work
with the manipulatives. She will make
corrections and help any student who
needs. Teacher 1 will use the
vocabulary words as they practice
solving problems (take away,
subtraction, minus sign, equal sign).
Teacher 1 will explain the importance
of putting the larger number first.

Station 2- (Teacher 2) In this station

the teacher will use the random number
generator on the smartboard with her
small group to make more subtraction
problems on the students dry erase
boards. Students will learn how to use a
number line to count back and solve
subtraction problems. Teacher 2 will
make sure students are counting back
starting at the larger number and not
starting to count until they have moved
onto the next number or made a leap
with their finger from the starting
number. Teacher 2 will observe the
students written work on the white
boards and use vocabulary terms (count
back, subtraction, difference, minus
sign, equal sign)

Station 3- (Paraprofessional) In this

station students will be working
independently with the guidance and
support of the paraprofessional. They
will be cutting out vocabulary cards and
gluing them into their math toolboxes
(notebooks). They will be adding the
vocabulary words subtraction, minus
sign, take away, count back, and
difference. They will be able to
reference these vocabulary words at any
time using their toolboxes. Once all
students have the cards glued into their
toolboxes (notebooks) the
paraprofessional can review the
vocabulary words with the students by
playing a memory game. The students
will match the definition or picture of
the action and the vocabulary word.
(The paraprofessional will also be
walking around and making sure the
students are on task in the independent
centers while students are cutting and
pasting.)

Station 4- (Independent) Students will

working independently on iPads to
practice their subtraction with 20 skills
by playing Subtraction within 20 on
Starfall.

Station 5- (Independent) Students will

work in pairs within their small group to
play Subtraction Power Towers. Each
group of students will be given a stack
of Dixie Cups with subtraction
problems written on the top of each cup.
They will take turns solving the math
problems on the cups one at a time
using their choice of manipulatives or a
number line and their dry erase board.
The inside of each cup displays the
answer as a self-check. If the student
correctly solves the problem, they get to
use the cup to build a tower with their
partner. If they do not solve the problem
correctly, they must place the cup on the
bottom of the pile and try again when
they get to the bottom of the stack.

Closure: After rotating to each station

students will be called back to their
individual seats. Three subtraction
problem will be written on the
board. Students will be given a post-
it note to solve the problem and
write their name. Students will stick
their post-it notes to a table when
they are done. This will be a quick
exit ticket to see who is mastering
subtraction within 20.
Formative Assessment Students will partake in a
Strategies: subtraction within 20 Kahoot game
using the iPads and Smartboard.
Student data will be printed and
reviewed by both teachers to plan
accordingly for reteach and
extension lesson plans. The Kahoot
game will played at a later date.

Modifications for Specific each station by an adult except in the
Students Power Tower and iPad stations. The
Power Tower game has a self-check
and the if needed students can be
paired specifically for extra peer.
The iPad center shouldnt require
any modifications except for the
paraprofessional reminding students
to stay on task.
Notes: Both teachers should reflect back on how the stations worked and record and note any
adjustments needed for the next time station teaching is used as well as the next time they teach
this lesson.
