1973 Obtained the Higher Diploma in Education

1976 Completed an M.Sc. in Psychology (by


research) from Trinity College, Dublin.
1977.84 Attended several in-service training
courses, e.g. on clinical hypnosis,
autogenic training, counselling and
psychotherapy.

1982 Completed my Ph.D., Department of


Psychology, Trinity College, Dublin.

1982.84 Participated in weekly seminars on


psychotherapy in Garden Hill House, St.
Jamess Hospital, Dublin.

classes in Ballyfermot Vocational School,
Dublin.

1974.84 Involved (part-time) in educational


innovation programs with the Curriculum
Development Unit, Trinity College, Dublin.
This included field work abroad.

1976.77 Research Fellow in the Department of


Psychology, Trinity College, Dublin. Did
research on heavy goods vehicle driver
stress.

1977.78 Taught Psychology to the Social Parents


of Stewarts Hospital, in Ballyfermot
Vocational School, Dublin (part-time), as
well as Biology.

1977.84 Did (part-time) clinical work and research


in the Health Care and Psychosomatic Unit,
Eastern Health Board Research Department,
St. Jamess Hospital, Dublin. Involved in
the St. Brendans Hospital resocialization
project research.

1978.82 Taught Psychology to adult night classes


in the College of Commerce, Dundrum,
County Dublin (part-time).

1979.84 Worked as a Guidance Counsellor with the


County Dublin and the County Kildare
Vocational Education Committees. This
involved psychometrics, as well as
personal, social, vocational and
educational counselling.

1984.86 Worked as Senior Psychologist in the


Psychosomatic Unit, Eastern Health Board
Research Department, St. Jamess Hospital,
Dublin. My responsibilities included
psychotherapy, assessment, research and
teaching medical and paramedical staff.
The research involved the rehabilitation
of the psychiatrically, mentally and
physically disabled patients placed with
the Rehabilitation Institute, Dublin.

1986-12 Employed as Senior Clinical Psychologist


(in association with the Trinity College
Professorial Unit) by St. Patricks
University Hospital, Dublin. (From 2002 as
Principal Clinical Psychologist). This
position involved psychotherapy,
assessment and research, as well as
psychotherapy supervision of trainee
Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatric
Registrars. For the latter I held
fortnightly Balint Groups from 2012 to
present.

I also taught pure and applied Psychology


to Trinity College medical students,
student nurses, psychiatric registrars,
and trainee Clinical and Counselling
Psychologists. In 2012 appointed Clinical
Senior Lecturer (part-time) in Psychiatry,
Trinity College, Dublin.

The research involved assessing learning


disability levels among the psychiatric
patients of St. Jamess Hospital.
Since 1986 I ran weekly courses in
psychotherapy for the staff of St.
Jamess, St. Patricks and St.
Edmundsburys Hospitals. This involved
aspects of individual, marital, family and
group therapy, as well as basic
counselling skills. I have also held
Personal Coping workshops for doctors,
nurses, physiotherapists and occupational
therapists (e.g. for the Irish Cancer
Society). I also taught models of
psychotherapy on the University College
and Trinity College courses for Clinical
and Counselling Psychologists.

1989.92 Taught psychotherapy and counselling on


the Trinity College, Dublin Diploma in
Counselling Psychology and the Masters
in Counselling Psychology courses.

1991-07 Taught psychotherapy on a part-time basis


to the University College, Dublin,
Masters in Psychological Science in
Psychotherapy course (up to 2003); the
Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic
Psychotherapy, and the Irish Psychiatric
Training Committee. I still supervise
other psychotherapists and run workshops.
