1. APPLICATION:
This procedure outlines the methods and equipment used to perform hardness testing of
material: carbon steel, cast steel and cast iron in RAPID PACKAGE 6E LLDPE PROJECT
at Pengerang & Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia.

4. HT PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION:
All personals working in measuring HT shall be trained and familliar with HT equipment and
technical specification of Project in HT.
HT operator shall be qualified and have certificated by Authority Company or HT
Manufacturer in operating HT equipment.
5. EQUIPMENT:
An hardness-testing machine will be used in conjunction with a certified hardness standard
block and various surface preparation equipment. The hardness testing machine shall be
calibrated annually by an authorized third party or whenever repaired.

Test Method Personnel performing hardness testing shall be familiar with all
testing procedure and technique instruction by Manufacturer.
Alignment - To prevent errors resulting from misalignment, the base support ring
of the impact device shall be held snugly and perpendicular to the surface of the
test piece.
Impact Direction - the relative angle of the probe should also be noted such that a
compensating factor may be applied (if necessary). For newer models
automatically compensate for test direction.
Spacing Indentations - The distance between any two impact points shall not be
less than two diameters edge-to-edge. The distance between the impact point and
a specimen edge shall not be less than three diameters edge-to-edge. No point
shall be impacted more than once.
Reading the Instrument - Hardness values in units are read directly on the
electronic display of the indicator device. The indicated value is automatically
replaced with the next test impact result.
Number of Impacts - Five impacts in an area of approximately 1 in.2 (645 mm2)
shall constitute a measurement. If the material being tested is considered to be
nonhomogeneous (for ex-ample, cast iron) ten impacts in an area shall be made
to constitute a measurement.
7. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:
7.1 For piping:
Final hardness of deposited weld metal and HAZ in carbon steel shall not exceed 200
HBN (210 HV10)/ HAZ 248 HV10.
It will be the sole responsibility of the contractor/client to review the hardness reading
and evaluate the same. If there are areas where hardness reading cause concern it is
strongly recommended that these areas be retest and results recorded.
Hardness measurements for welding procedure qualification shall be performed by the
Vickers method, with hardness traverses in accordance with ISO 9015.Hardness limits
according to RAPID-FE1-TPX-MCI-SPN-0001-0002, API-582 and NACE-SP0472. CS:
weld metal and base material 200 HBN (210 HV10) / HAZ 248 HV10.
7.2 For structure:
Shall not exceed 325 HV10
8. REPORTING:
One hardness test report will be made for each area inspected, the test point within this area
should be clearly shown on a sketch and these points referenced to reading taken.
Each hardness test report will contain the following information:
- Project
- Location of test point
- Sketch of test point location
- Hardness values found on standard reference block.
- Hardness Values
- Test results shall be report on preformatted report form attached.
Hardness value shall be evaluated against material specifications and those required in
project specifications.
The hardness report shall indicate actual hardness reading for the test method used,
type of hardness tester, personnel conducting hardness tests, type of material, and
calibration.
