Day 1: Introduction to Subtraction Co-Teaching Lesson Plan

Grade: First
Model: Teaming

Teacher 1: Coyne
Teacher 2: Major
Paraprofessional: Martin

Co-Teaching Approach: ___One Teach, One Observe/Assist __ _ Station Teaching

___Parallel Teaching ___ Alternative Teaching
_X_Team Teaching

Subject: First Grade Math Topic/Lesson: Subtraction within 20 Date: Fall 2017

Standard(s): CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within
10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 =
14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9);
using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12,
one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding
6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Lesson Outcomes:
I can subtract within 20 by drawing pictures to find the difference.
I can write subtraction equations within 20 using the correct symbols and signs.

Materials Needed:
1. Smartboard/ Computer
2. BrainPop Jr. login
3. Large Foam Dice
4. White boards and dry erase markers
Vocabulary:
1. Subtraction
2. Minus sign
3. Equal sign
4. Difference
5. Count back
6. Take away

figure out how many eggs were left? within 20 on BrainPOP Jr.
2. Discuss how you use subtraction
every day without even know it.
Lesson Activities: 1. Teacher 1 will roll large foam dice to See Teacher 1 Box for
get numbers for subtraction equations. both teachers roles for
this lesson.
2. Teacher 2 will record the problems on
the Smartboard for students to see how
to set up their subtraction equations.
Teacher 1 will discuss each vocabulary
term as Teacher 2 scribes the equations.

3. Teacher 1 will tell students there are

several ways to find the answer to
subtraction problems. Today they will
be drawing pictures to solve.

4. Under each equation Teacher 2 will

draw and cross out circles to
demonstrate how to solve the
subtraction problem. Make sure to show
students how to properly cross out their
work in a neat organized way so they
dont make mistakes when they go back
and count the remaining circles. Solve
several problems as a whole class.

5. Split students into two halves, one

side of the room versus the other half.
Each teacher will be a team captain for
each team.

6. Teachers will display the Snakes and

Ladders board game on the smartboard.
Using the large dice students will take
turns rolling the dice and moving their
team colored Post-It note on the
smartboard as they play. Students at
their desks will be responsible for
solving the problems on their white
boards by drawing pictures of circles
and crossing out the circles according to
the subtraction problem their team lands
on.

7. Students will play until one team gets

to the end of the game board. Teachers
1 and 2 will walk around and observe
their students. They will assist students
who need help with drawing the
pictures. Both teachers will be
responsible for pulling names for
students to move the team Post-It notes
on the game board and rolling the dice.
Closure: At the closure of the lesson take the
BrainPOP Jr. quiz as a whole class to
review what they learned in the short
video and what they practiced by
playing the game.

Formative Assessment Students will partake in a

using the iPads and Smartboard.
Student data will be printed and
reviewed by both teachers to plan
accordingly for reteach and
extension lesson plans. The Kahoot
game will played at a later date once
the unit is complete.

Students subtraction will have one-on-one
assistance from both Teacher 1 or 2
as they rotate around the room
during the lesson.

2. Students will be placed in seating

according to needs.

3. If a student is unable to draw the

circles on their white boards they
will be given manipulatives chips to
use instead.
Notes: Both teachers should reflection how the lesson went independently. Teachers should then
come together to discuss what they want change for next time, how they worked together during
the team teaching model and what they wish to work on and change in the future while team
teaching.
