Reflection

This reflection is all about our 4 days exposure in San Juan de Dios Hospital. Before I go

with my reflection I would like to thank our Prof. Christine O. Paulino, RN, MSN for giving us

the chance to have our practicum in San Juan de Dios.

Its our 1st day in the hospital, and I can feel the warm welcome given to us by the

hospitals nursing director. This day is our orientation day, were all excited to see whats going

to be next. Case Presentations format and expectations were discussed by our professor. Maam

Mina invited us to join the nurse orientees for their orientation, and she discussed the hospitals

humble beginning. After we had our lunch, we went straight to emergency room, we were

accommodated by maam Dianne Lopez, unit manager of ER. She oriented us regarding how the

flow of care is done in the ER. We were observant to the patients, and luckily, we found the case

for our case presentation. I dont want to waste time and I told my groupmates to indulge to the

case already. My groupmates were cooperative and we interviewed the patient and also his

relative regarding his case. There was no admitting diagnosis yet, but we assume that it would be

something related to infection. I realized again how important history taking is, because with

good assessment you can already have something in your head about whats going on with the

patient and what might be the problem with the patient. The day ends with our impression that

the patient suffered from electrolyte imbalance secondary to an infection.

Its our 2nd day and this day is set to hospitals operating room and critical care unit. I was

so excited because the last time I went to an operating room were College days. 1st in the

morning we had our hard quiz with our professor, good thing that she discussed some of the

standard operating procedure within the unit. After we had our quiz, we were endorsed to a
senior staff in the operating room, she welcomes us with warm smile and she looks like shes

willing to impart knowledge to us. We had our return demonstration regarding surgical hand

washing, I was anxious at first but suddenly, I remembered my college days, and I told myself to

just enjoy the moment and review the procedure again. After surgical hand washing we went

straight to gowning and gloving closed technique. We were all anxious because we forgot the

steps already. Its good to experience these procedures again. We had our lunch then we went to

the hospitals ICU. We were so excited to step in the critical care unit because most of us are not

in the hospital setting. We were briefed by our professor regarding the activity of the day. We

were assigned to patients by partner, and we utilized our Gordons checklist. Some of us used the

NIHS guidelines. With my partner, we went to electroencephalogram together with our partner

staff nurse with our patient. The day ends with a lot of learnings.

Its our 3rd day in San Juan de Dios, and its ACLS day. Its what were studying last night.

I am slightly anxious but I know I am prepared. We had our review before going to the ICU unit

for ACLS. Our professor taught us techniques on how to remember the algorithm. Some did

good and some felt not satisfactory but at the end of the day, it is learning that counts.

Friday, our last day and our case presentation day. All of my classmates didnt sleep in

order to finish the case. Many things happened during the day, but although we failed to present

on time, the show must go on, and we did everything we could in order to present our case. We

couldve do more better if there a lot of time but time is time and we couldnt do anything about

it. I cherished every second that Im in front of the panelist because I know my group did well

and we worked so hard. One thing that I learned in this practicum, is that you can never predict

things so better to act early or advance in order to be fully prepared of anything, because we

nurses shouldve good time management skills in order to give optimum quality care.
