Algebra I and Honors Algebra I

Mr. Ren

A. Description Algebra I

This course constitutes the first formal secondary subject for college prep students. It assumes that
students who enroll possess a fundamental knowledge and competence with numerical operations and
have a solid grasp of basic concepts and relations in mathematics. In this course algebraic representation
and simplification are stressed and students are taught to solve equations and apply their knowledge to
problem-solving. Students will be expected to demonstrate mastery in all phases of this subject. This
course provides students with the tools necessary for success on the end-of-course state assessment for
Algebra I.

A. Description (Honors Algebra I)

The Honors Algebra I course is designed to provide students with an in-depth level of instruction, an
accelerated pace and a cooperative learning environment. The course guides students in the development
of critical thinking skills and algebraic problem-solving skills which provide the foundation for real world
problem-solving. It is targeted to highly motivated students who have previously had some algebra.

Honors Mathematics courses are intended to be more challenging than standard courses and provide
multiple opportunities for students to take greater responsibility for their learning. Honors Mathematics
courses should be distinguished by a difference in the quality of the work expected rather than merely the
quantity of the work required.

This course meets the requirements for the Algebra I End-of-Course Exam.

D. Course Goals

To exhibit skill and the understanding with regard to:

I. Algebraic representation and simplification

II. Operations on algebraic expressions
III. Solving linear equations and inequalities
IV. Graphing linear equations and inequalities
V. Solving problems by means of algebraic methods
VI. Operations on Functions

E. Classroom Behavior and Procedures

Respect others and property. Students dont have the right to interfere with class learning.

Be on time, in your seat and have all materials ready before the bell rings

Be honest and an active participant

Be prepared, which include pencils sharpened before class

Leave cell phones and music players off and out of sight. If I find them in the classroom, the devices
will belong to the teacher and parents will have to pick them up.

There will be no food or drink allowed. I will allow water bottles in the classroom. However, if this
privilege is abused, then it will be taken away.

F. Late work & Make-up Policy

Please see the teacher to make-up/late work. Missing/late work will be handled on a case-by-case basis,
points may be deducted. Missing/late work is a behavioral issue and should also affect the citizenship
grade.
