Overall Assessment of AUBE 5003 Course Teaching and Learning with Technology

I was really looking forward to participating in this Teaching and Learning with Technology Course
(AUBE 5003), having attended three (3) previous AUBE courses (AUBE 5001, 5002 and 5004). I
had absolutely no training in the teaching discipline prior to my participation in these classes, and
I quickly realized how little I know about teaching as a discipline, and consequently how much
there is to learn about teaching.
I realized that I have been getting by (as a lecturer/facilitator) for the past seventeen (17) years
primarily due to my subject matter expertise in the project management courses that I teach,
and there was a lot of opportunities for improvement of the learning experience of my students.
I firmly believed that with the knowledge/learnings/experiences gained from the prior classes I
can now utilize technology to enhance the learning process. I believed that by attending this
course I would be provided with information about everything about technology in teaching
that I wanted to know, but was afraid to ask.
I can now testify that my expectations were exceeded. At the end of this course I can
unreservedly say that I have attended a Boot Camp in technology applications in education and
I believe that with the material/learnings from the other AUBE classes and with the tools
provided in this class I can aspire to provide students with learning experiences that are practical,
related to the real-world environment, enjoyable, enlightening and will meet the learning
objectives of the course/topic.
Prior to my attendance in this class I considered myself fairly familiar with technology for business
applications as I currently use the full Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) as well as
Microsoft Visio and Project. I am not involved in online collaboration in the business environment
and I essentially use stand-alone programs.
Through my attendance in this class, I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the wide range of
software applications for business and education, many of which have versions available free of
charge and most support online collaboration.
I must admit that there were times in the class that I felt overwhelmed by the amount/range of
information being presented, and sometimes questioned whether all of this information was
necessary for this syllabus. I later realized that the facilitator was simply exposing us to the range
of possibilities that are available to us and we would choose the tools best suited for our specific
applications.in education.
Some thoughts on the course:
1. Lecturer/facilitator is very knowledgeable and current with technology tools and
applications and was very competent in managing a group of diverse individuals.
2. The topics covered were up to date, and introduced a wide range of technology tools to
facilitate any single learning objective, as well as a range of technology tools to facilitate
the entire spectrum of learning activities within a course.
3. The course content is well structured with more than adequate practical, application-
driven activities.
4. Assignments were designed to facilitate collaboration amongst class participants and also
facilitated viewing and feedback of each participants assignments by the entire class and
lecturer.
5. Class participants very diverse in their knowledge and experiences and many learning
opportunities were provided by class participants. There was good camaraderie amongst
the class participants.

In summary, based on the learnings of this class I will seek to integrate technology in my courses
in order to provide the most effective and successful learning environment for students. I will
ensure that the sequence of activities will remain as follows:
1. Identifying and selecting learning outcomes
2. Articulating and organising course content
3. Selecting and developing teaching strategies
4. Determining methods of assessing student learning
5. Determining opportunities to integrate technology in steps 2, 3 and 4 above.

I will strive to ensure that my courses do not become overloaded with technology (just for the
sake of using technology) in a manner that it detracts from the learning process. I will seek to
ensure that there is a healthy balance between technology and course content.

Thank you, Ms. Mahabir-Cletus, for a wonderful learning experience.
