PROPOSED REVISED SYLLABUS FOR

MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY (MIL)

Media 220 Prof. Nathan Rondina

Grade: 12 Semester: 2
Core Subject Title: Media and Information Literacy No. of Hours/Semester: 80 hours/semester
3hours/week

Core Subject Description: The course introduces the learners to basic understanding of media and information, and media as source of information; both as channels
of communication and tools for the development of individuals and societies.
It also aims to develop students to be creative and critical thinkers as well as responsible users and competent producers of media and
information.

Course Objectives: For the learners to

- Explain media and information as two separate and interrelated entities, its power and its role in the society

- Apply media literacy in their daily interaction and activities involving different media forms like print, broadcast and online.

- Differentiate a media literate individual to a non-media literate by citing actual situations which exhibits media literacy

- Create several media outputs which will develop the media literate individual in them
Course Rationale:

Marshall McLuhan once related media to a fish and asked this question: Does a fish know its wet?

He said that it does not because it lives in the water, and the water is wet in nature same with media. Everytime we wake up, most of us immediately check our
Facebook account through our smartphones, we listen to music during most of our free time, we grab a tabloid along with our cup of breakfast coffee, we turn on the
television to watch our favorite teleserye and see our most loved celebrity with an illusion that only one glass or one appliance is setting us apart, we listen to the radio
and wait for our favorite DJs voice and nonsense jokes, and we see an array of billboards along our way to school or work. See? It is everywhere. But, despite the fact
that it is everywhere and is being accessed most of the time in a day, people seldom realize it. In fact, we live not on it or in it but with it, yet we are unaware of it.

Ever since, media in all of its forms have been significant contributors in our life as individuals, as a society, and as a nation. It is powerful because it can greatly influence
the way we view and think of everything which we are usually not aware of. According to James Watson (1998), Communication is power and that power is obtained and
held through control. Who controls the means of mass communication has the potential power to influence the ways in which society works.

Media, as means to communicate, possess power and control over peoples consciousness, and shape how people think and feel. Sometimes, they feed us with
information that we have to know, but more often, they present information that they want us to know and believe in.

Hence, having said those, studying Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is very important regardless if you are pursuing a career in media or not because we have to
learn how to digest and process information that are readily being given to us. As consumers of media, we should not be spoon-fed but be active participants instead. So
through MIL, learners as consumers would know what to do best with the information given to them and how to deal with media recognizing its role in the society.

The model that we developed is based on the revised version of Blooms taxonomy where our learning outcomes are evaluated from the lower order thinking skills which
is remembering up to higher order thinking skills which is creating. Yes, the curriculum that we are expected to develop should be outcomes-based and learner-centered
but we came to realize that we cant really get an input from the learners if we dont atleast introduce them to the concepts which they can remember and eventually
understand, up to the point where they can create from it.

With that in mind, the trend of our lesson line-up is arranged from the most general concepts down to the very specific ones. So the principle is we are going to expose
them to bigger ideas before we zoom in to detailed ones. That way, they will have more time to understand through theories and application before they can create at
the end of it all applying praxis.
