STAAD or (STAAD.Pro) is a structural analysis and design computer program

originally developed by Research Engineers International in Yorba Linda, CA. In late
2005, Research Engineers International was bought by Bentley Systems.
An older version called STAAD-III for windows is used by Iowa State University for
educational purposes for civil and structural engineers.
The commercial version STAAD.Pro is one of the most widely used structural analysis
and design software. It supports several steel, concrete and timber design codes
It can make use of various forms of analysis from the traditional 1st order static analysis,
2nd order p-delta analysis, geometric non linear analysis or a buckling analysis. It can also
make use of various forms of dynamic analysis from modal extraction to time history and
response spectrum analysis.
In recent years it has become part of integrated structural analysis and design solutions
mainly using an exposed API called OpenSTAAD to access and drive the program using
an VB macro system included in the application or other by including OpenSTAAD
functionality in applications that themselves include suitable programmable macro
systems. Additionally STAAD.Pro has added direct links to applications such as RAM
Connection and STAAD.Foundation to provide engineers working with those applications
which handle design post processing not handled by STAAD.Pro itself. Another form of
integration supported by STAAD.Pro is the analysis schema of the CIMsteel Integration
Standard, version 2 commonly known as CIS/2 and used by a number modeling and
analysis applications.

DAY-1 PROCEDURE SHEET

1. Draw the structure
Grid Method
a. Set the grid in front view.
b. Set the grid lines and spacing as required.
c. Make sure Snap-Node-Beam is ON.
You can find SNB in Geometry-beam-Right side Bottom
d. Draw the structure starting from origin and press esc after you complete drawing
the structure.
e. Switch off the grid.
Str-Wizard Method
a. Switch off the grid.
b. Pick Geometry-Structure Wizard
c. Change Model type to Frame Models
d. Double Click Bay Frame.
e. Change the x y & z parameters & number of bays and bay lengths.
f. Pick apply, put the str in front view, verify the model.
g. Transfer the model.
2. Dimension the Model.
3. Define Properties in the right side properties box.
4. Assign Properties to members.
5. Define Supports in the right side supports box.
6. Assign supports to bottom nodes.
7. Define Load Title.

15. Pick OK and maximize the white screen.
16. By default we see the deflection diagram.
17. Hold Ctrl & Move the mouse wheel forward to increase scale.
18. Switch off deflection diagram.
19. Switch on BMD Mz. (Switch off after seeing it)
20. Switch on SFD Fy. (Switch off after seeing it)

Theory to Read on Live Loads

Live loads are different for different buildings and structures. It keeps changing from time to time
even on same structure. Examples for live loads are weight of persons, movable partitions, dust
loads, weight of furniture etc. These loads should be suitable assumed by the designed. It is one of
the major loads in structural design. The minimum live loads per square meter area for different
types of structures are given in IS 875 (Part-2)-1987.
IS 875 (Part-II)-1987 specifies the live loads for following occupancy conditions:
Residential Buildings- dwelling houses, hotels, hostels, boiler rooms and plant rooms, garages etc.
Educational buildings
Institutional buildings
Assembly buildings
Business and office buildings
Mercantile buildings
Industrial buildings
Storage Rooms
The code specifies uniformly distributed loads as wells as concentrated loads. The structures are
to be investigated for both uniformly distributed and worst position of concentrated loads. The
condition which gives worst effect should be considered for structural design, but both should not
be considered to act simultaneously.

give +ve load in the stair case area to nullify the wrongly taken load at the stair
