Instructions to Students

1. Regulations of this Laboratory

1. You are required to know the locations of the emergency trip switch in the laboratory.
2. You are required to be familiar with basic safety procedures for electrical shock.
3. You are required to dress safely, no garments likely to pick-up static, shoes such that you
are not inadvertently subject to shock, nothing that impedes your ability to work.
4. During the lab class, it is required that one student of the group is always at the
worktable once the experiment has started.
5. It is required that you take explicit permission if you have to leave the class.
6. It is not permissible for the first year student to be alone in the laboratory at any time.
7. Reports are due every week at the beginning of the lab class hour as per format decided
by your instructor.
8. Do not come to class carrying an infection - take leave and make up your experiment.
9. See to it that your laboratory partner knows your whereabouts. If you are unable to come
to class for any reason, inform him / her.
10. Make-up times are fixed and allotted by the laboratory co-ordinator. Book when you
need.

2. Lab Procedures
In the first class, please see that: Your lab group has been formed and you have got the manual.
Check that you are at the right table. Your table must have:
1. Power supply
2. Oscilloscope
3. Function Generator

The following equipments can be obtained when needed:

1. Multimeter
2. User manual for equipments.

You should have the following with you:

1. Report of previous class.
2. Ensure that your report contains the data sheet in original signed by the instructor in the
previous class.
3. Lab manual.

You should know the following:

1. The experiment that you are about to conduct.
2. The location of the emergency trip switch.
3. Basic safety procedures as given in the manual.
4. Do not switch on the circuit / experiment until you get it checked once by technician /
instructor.

At the end of the class hour:

1. Clean up your table.
2. Switch off all equipments.
3. Hand in all components issued to you for the hour.
4. See that the Instructor/TA/Lab Technician has signed your data sheet of the experiment
done on that day.
5. Check what you have to do for your next experiment.
6. Get your table checked by the technician before you leave.

3. Electronic Test Set-Up

Your electronic test set-up comprises of:
a. The circuit or device under test hooked up on the breadboard, typically referred to as the
Circuit Under Test or CUT.
b. Talkers => which send signals or apply voltages to the CUT.
c. Listeners => which listen or sense voltages or currents in the CUT.

3.1 Breadboard

Blocks A and D are usually used for power supply and GND connections.
In Blocks B and C, all points in a column are common.
All ICs should be connected laterally across the central groove (between B & C).

3.2 Power Supply

Mains operated. Plug in wire from back of panel to 220v mains.
Talker: Supplies dc voltage at + (red) and - (black) terminals.
Floating supply: Either end may be grounded if needed.
Current limit knob controls maximum current that can be supplied before it cuts off. Its an
useful portection against inadvertent short-circuit or burn out. Set to relatively low value for
safety.

3.3 Function Generator

Mains operated. Plug in wire from back of panel to 220V mains.
Talker
Select switch for triangular, pulsed or sinusoidal waveforms.
Push button switch to add dc bias voltage.
Each -20dB push-button switch attenuates signal by a factor of 10.
