The Goshorns Step by Step

We started off the month in Lima saying

The
ngoodbye to the boys and Audrey. I have to be honest,
it never gets easier. I remember leaving the states a
few years ago knowing it would be a couple years be-
fore I saw Daniel again. Skype is amazing, but its still
hard not physically being with them. It helps knowing
how much they love the Lord and that Hes watching programs in Huancayo. All went very well while we
over them. were away.

After we said goodbye to the kids, we stayed in
Lima and waited for Zumilinda to arrive. We were a
little surprised when she arrived with her older sister
but her mother was not well enough to make the trip.
Fortunately, Aida had the necessary documents giving
her permission to make any medical decisions for her
sister. We also arranged for Zumilinda to have oxygen
for the trip which really helped. We spent about 10
days seeing different doctors. The final conclusion,
from all the doctors in Lima, was that Zumilinda could
not be helped in Peru and has around 2 years to live.
One lung has collapsed and theres much pressure on
the heart. Weve sent all scans and test results to
Shriners in the states and are waiting to hear from
them. Ive since visited Zumi at her house in
Andamarca. Andamarca is much deeper in the moun-
tains and is considered the red zone. This means drug
and terrorist activity.
While in Lima our team continued our
Jennifers Bible study continues to grow at
the prison. It seems she has a new woman each
week. They are really growing in the Lord and
Jennifer is excited about her new team of teachers.
Peru celebrated their independence day in
July. In Peru its the law that you fly the Peruvian
flag on this day. If you do not and are caught you'll
be fined. They also started celebrating Santiago.
Santiago is considered the patron of the animals.
What we really see is the biggest holiday for
alcohol abuse. People save all year so they can buy
alcohol for this holiday. Their children will go
without food so they can drink all day long.
Crestwood UMC sent money so the church
they started can be finished. This is also great for
us because we will have full use of the church for
one of our programs.

In our last newsletter we told you about Rocotin, the clown coming to our program and
entertaining the kids. Rocotin belongs to an international Christian group of clowns. Unusual, I
know:) Jennifer and I were at the prison for an event and Rocotin and his team, which consists of
his children and nephew, were there also. He always has a message about Jesus in his routines. On
this day at the prison during his act many of the women in the prison started to cry and one of the
women went out in front of all the others and gave her life to Christ. I told Jennifer that Ive never
seen anything like it. If a clown can bring people to the Lord, so can all of us.
Rocotin wasn't always a Christian, he used to sell pharmaceuticals to all the different
pharmacies in Peru. He fell in love and got married and he said the first 5 years of his marriage
were miserable. His wife excepted Christ long before him and he said that when he finally
excepted Christ his marriage changed. Hes been married 28 years now and he said the last 22 of
years have been wonderful. He decided he would spend the rest of his life serving the Lord and
felt the calling to become a clown. He quit his job and moved to Costa Rica to attend a clown
school. I know:) He has brought other Christian clowns to perform in Peru from the U.S., Mexico,
Israel, Turkey and many other countries. When his wife became very ill, all these clowns from
around the world came and performed in order to raise money for her surgery.
We can all serve the Lord in some way. Everyone doesnt need to quit their job or move to
a foreign land, but everyone needs to serve. Ive seen so many people retire, but they know
theres no such thing as retiring from serving the Lord. I feel so very grateful that I haven't been
called to be a clown, even though Jennifer might say Im already one.
