0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution
on 28 February 1978, after the draft finalized by the Packaging of Engineer-
ing Goods Sectional Committee had been approved by the Marine, Cargo
Movement and Packaging Division Council.
0.2 This standard has been prepared with the idea of providing guidance
to all those involved in the packaging, forwarding and transportation of
cast iron pipes and fittings generally intended for use as drain, waste or
ventilating pipes.
0.3 This code covers pipes and fittings conforming to the following Indian
Standards:
IS : 1230-1968 Specification for cast iron rainwater pipes and fittings
(first r&-ion )
IS : 1729-1964 Specification for sand cast iron spigot and socket soil,
waste and ventilating pipes, fittings and accessories
0.4 Though this standard does take into account the transportation hazards
normally encountered, it is assumed that the packages would be subjected
to proper handling in transit in order to ensure the delivery of the product
in good condition.
0.5 It is also the intentionthat the adoption of the practice recommended
would result in attaining uniformity, simplicity, adequacy and economy in
shipment of these products. .

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard lays down practice for packaging of cast iron pipes and
fittings of 150 mm diameter and below mainly intended for export.
2. PREVENTIVE TREATMENT
2.1 All the pipes shall be coated, both internally and externally, unless
agreed to otherwise, with a eoatmg material having good a dherenf:e and
which should not peel off.

3. METHOD OF PACKAGING OF PIPES

3.1 The pipes shall be packed in wooden crates conforming to IS : 307 l-


1965*.

3.1.1 Pipes of same length shall be packed in a crate as far as possible.


3-1.2 The pipes shall be supported on wooden planks of cross section
75 X 100 mm, 5 pipes in a row depending upon the size of the pipes and
their masses.
3.1.2.1 On the pile of the pipes, two more planks of the same C~OSI
sections shall be placed and the top and bottom planks bolted together by
means of 20 mm rods passing from top to bottom and with nuts fixed on.
3.1.3 The approximate number of pipes to be packed in each crate shall
be as under:

3.1.4 Wooden blocks 75 x 75 mm shall he fixed on the lower planks to


facilitate handling by fork lift trucks, where necessary.

4. PACKAGING OF PIPE FITTINGS


4.1 The pipe fittings like bends, tees, off-sets, etc, shall be packed in
wooden cases and the number in a package shall be so regulated that the
mass of the package does not exceed 500 kg.

5. MARKING
5.1 The crates shall be marked with the following information:
a) Particulars of pipes;
b) Any information required by the purchaser; and
c) Handling instructions, if any, in accordance with IS: 1260
( Part II )-1973*.
