Honors English 9

For this assignment you will need to consider two aspects of this To Kill a Mockingbird. First, the time
period of the books setting. Second, the dynamic of the Maycomb society. With these two elements in
mind, you are going to create TWO separate front page newspaper covers that would accurately depict
what a newspaper would look like the day after Tom Robinsons and also after Bob Ewells deaths. The
idea behind this assignment is to show how differently the paper might look like for these the deaths of
these two men.

This assignment must include:

1. Use makemynewspaper.com (this is free and easy to use)

2. A headline for the paper (title)
3. Newspaper name. Imagine you are a reporter (one of you may be the editor) for a local
Maycomb newspaper, but not Mr. Underwoods Maycomb Tribune. Come up with your own
newspaper name. Look to real newspapers as examples for your name.
4. Must include at least one photo for EACH front page cover, which should reflect the tone of your
editorial.
5. Must include an editorial (min of 300 words)
a. An editorial is an article that presents a writers opinion on an issue. Much in the same
manner of a lawyer, editorial writers build on an argument and try to persuade readers
to think the same way they do. Editorials are meant to influence public opinion,
promote critical thinking, and sometimes cause people to take action on an issue. In
essence, an editorial is an opinionated news story where the writer presents his/her
side cohesively and persuasively.
b. 1. Criticize: These editorials constructively criticize actions, decisions or situations of
concern while providing solutions to the problem identified. Immediate purpose is to
get readers to see the problem, not the solution.
2. Persuade: Editorials of persuasion aim to immediately see the solution, not the
problem. From the first paragraph, readers will be encouraged to take a specific,
positive action.
3. Praise: These editorials commend people for something done well.

6. An interview (200 words)

a. From someone in attendance of the trial and verdict and someone who knew and
interacted with Bob Ewell. You are free to use a character you know or make up
someone, but keep in mind that the tone of the paper should be consistent with the
editorial and interview.

*Remember this paper should not reflect how you would create a front page
newspaper, but how a newspaper company would create the front page, given
the time period and the societal dynamic.
