INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Math classes build upon previous knowledge and skills. Students are expected to attend class, participate,
and complete assignments and tests. Attention to preparation, critical thinking and learning processes are essential.
Teachers facilitate thinking and learning by providing instruction, practice, applications and assessments. Students
are responsible for their learning.

Late Work- Practice Problems:

Late work is highly discouraged. Completing practice problems in a timely manner allows for immediate practice
following a lesson and leads to greater success in the classroom and on exams. However, practice problems can
be checked up to 1 week after the initial due date. After this due date, the work will not be accepted.

Binders
As per school requirements, each student should have a 3 inch binder in which they keep all their work for their classes.
Students will keep their notebook for Algebra 1 in this binder and binders will be checked every Thursday using a
rubric. However an additional individual portfolio will be kept in the room where all outputs in the class will be placed.

Continuous Improvement DATA Folders:

Each student will be required to maintain a DATA folder for Algebra 1. This folder will contain a class mission
statement, individual student mission statement, student created SMART goals (short term and long term), PARCC and
EOC scores, scores on UNIT Exams, bi-weekly grade checks, and scores on quarterly assessments. The information and
data will be updated on a regular basis and parents will be able to see student data upon their visit to the classroom.
PARCC
Students will take the PARCC Exam for Algebra 2 in the Spring, dates TBA. Students and parents can find the Algebra 1
framework and practice problems on the PARCC Website https://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/. A score of 4 is
required in order for students to obtain graduation
End of Course Exam:
All students will take the EOC Exam issued by the NM Public Education Department in May. This exam will serve as a
graduation requirement. Blueprints and additional information can be found on the NM PED Website
http://ped.state.nm.us/assessmentaccountability/assessmentevaluation/EOC/index.html.
Extra Help The Math Table: Students can receive additional learning support from any of the math teachers at BHS
everyday during lunch in the cafeteria at The Math Table. Students can eat lunch, sit with their peers, and teachers,
and work collaboratively to master skills and problem solving. Please note that the availability of teachers may change
unexpectedly due to unforeseen circumstances. Should a change or cancellation occur, an announcement will be made
in classes of over the intercom.
