Data Virtualization for
Data as a Service

4
Data as a Service is a service that provides pre-
aggregated and pre-calculated analytical data
giving insights into key business metrics to
facilitate quicker and better informed decisions.

Not to be confused with a Data Service

Typically provides transaction level data that can be used for reports and analytics. However, the
data is not pre-aggregated or pre-calculated. The data analyst must perform the analysis and roll
up of the data as needed.
The Business Need Information for Decision Makers

Access to complete
information: business entities
Invoices Products
and pre-integrated views

Access to related
Customers
information: discovery and
self service Service
Usage

Access in real-time from

different apps and devices Sales Marketing Support Executive

6
The Data Challenges

Accessing and integrating internal and

external data for strategic decision
making
Sales Marketing Support Executive
Increased volume and diversity of
data and demands for quicker time to
delivery

Internal data silos often based on Warehouse Cloud

application security constraints Apps

Need to create purpose-built data

Apps
analytics for expedited decision making No SQL Documents

and doing all of the above with good

governance process and procedures Big Data
Database

7
Accessing External Data Sources
Regulatory data, Government data, Partner
data, etc.
e.g. census data, economic data, etc.

Often exposed via API

RESTful Web Service or HTTP GET
No ownership of external data
Changes outside of your control
Access data in situ better than downloading
Always get most up-to-date data

8
Increasing Volume and Diversity

Increasing data volumes and diversity of

sources and formats
Data volumes are growing
Data sources are expanding
Data formats are changing
Traditional data integration techniques are
no longer enough
Dataset too large to copy
Need to be able to integrate and provision
data to decision makers without copying it

9
Internal Data Silos

The curse of data integrators

Being blocked from an applications
data because of security policies
Data should be available on an as
needed basis
Not dictated by application
functionality
Need to break down data silos and
make data available in a timely fashion

10
Need to Create Built for Purpose Analytics

Data is consumed at different

granularities
Need to support all levels
e.g. transactional level for data
analyst, aggregate level for decision
makers

Built for purpose analytics give users

the actionable insights needed for
business decision
Results in quicker and better
informed decisions
11
Data as a Service using Data Virtualization
Data Virtualization allows you to:
1. Access all data internal and external without replicating it to a
central repository
2. Abstract data complexities location, format, protocols, etc. from
users
3. Provide secure and controlled access to data without local security
silos getting in the way
4. Build data views of differing levels of granularity for different
types of users
e.g. transactional level for data analysts, purpose-built analytics
for decision makers

Case Study DrillingInfo

Provides analytical insights for decision makers in O&G industry

e.g. where/how to drill and produce wells to generate the highest return
DrillingInfo gathers data from many sources
Regulatory data e.g. well surveys and completion data, lease/well production
volumes and permits
Customer data gathered directly from wells across U.S.
Internal data sets

Data is enriched with advanced analytics and packaged as Data as a

Information rich external data assets
When the weather is abnormally bad, how does that affect retail sales?
Integrate data from National Weather Service with sales history

Connecting data silos

Key Enterprise data resides in different systems and different technologies
RDBMS, Flat Files, Hadoop, NoSQL, etc.

Summary Key Takeaways

Data Virtualization allows you to quickly create enriched purpose-

built analytics (Data as a Service) providing insights on key
business metrics for decision makers
Results in quicker and better informed decisions
Data can come from internal and external data sources
No need to copy external data retrieve directly from source
External can enrich the internal data provide information to
decision makers
Data silos (and organization boundaries) can be broken down to
provide best available information to drive business decisions
