ACTIVITY 1
HESS LAW

A. PURPOSE
Student can determine H of a reaction
Prove occur Hess Law, which tell us that change of enthalpy reaction depend
on the initial and the end of reaction, not depend on the reaction process
In this experiment NaOH is reacted with HCl solution :
1. add soid NaOH to HCl solution
2. solve solid NaOH in water, then mix the solution with HCl
Reaction :
1. NaOH (s) + HCl (aq) NaCl (aq) + H2O (l)
2. NaOH (s) + H2O (l) NaOH (aq)
3. NaOH (aq) + HCl (aq) NaCl (aq) + H2O (l)

B. BASIC THEORY
C. TOOLS AND MATERIAL
1. Measure cylinder 100 ml
2. Plastic basin 200 ml
3. Measure glass 100 ml
4. Thermometre
5. Solid NaOH
6. HCl solution 0,5 M
7. HCl solution 1 M
8. Water

D. STEPS
Reaction 1
1. Add 50 ml of HCl solution 0,5 M into the plastic basin. Notes the
temperature as the initial temperature
2. Weight 1 gr of solid NaOH
3. Add solid NaOH into the plastic basin, shake it to solve NaOH and
notes the temperature as the final temperature
Reaction 2
1. a. Add 25 ml of water into the plastic basin, notes the temperature as
the initial temperature
b. Weight 1 gr solid NaOH and add into plastic basin with the water
inside and shake it and notes the temperature change
2. a. Replace NaOH solution in the reaction 1.b into the chemistry glass
b. Add 25 ml of HCl solution 1M into the other chemistry glass
c. Take both of the chemistry glasses into the basin that contains water
till both of the temperature is same
d. Pour both of the solution into calorimeter, shake it and notes the
temperature change
NOTES
1. q = m . c . t
q : heat reaction (joule/J)
C : specific heat
m : mass
t : temperature change
2. From the H change in this reaction, think that the solution same as
with the water, so the density of water same as with density of solution
and specific heat same as with the water too. (density of water = 1
gr/ml, specific heat of water = 4,2 Joule/gr)
