of mounting, ascending serifs and fillets, so prominent in the
typefaces used in headings and titles. Those suggestions are,
nevertheless, geometrical and structural pretexts for the sub-
stance of the painting, which constitutes the field of the artists
everyday labor. As is usual in Rojos workshop, each one of
these paintings hides many other rehearsals, ancient lives and
strata behind the crust of its pigment, which the artist has
been applying meticulously in a labor of constant construc-
tion and destruction. In a certain way, this house of letters
is a home for ghosts: namely, those of the many versions of
these paintings that the painter has sacrificed gleefully in a
year of planning in sketches and two years of working on the
canvas. For each one of these works is the result of a very
long process of fine-tuning and maturation that occurs not in
the artists head, but rather in the alchemy of the attacks of
pigment and acrylic, and in an act of creation that is resolved,
day by day, between eye and hand.

Beginning in 1971, Vicente Rojo began a series of paintings
T that is known by the title Negations.1 Over the course of four
years, he completed more than a hundred works, the defining
Negations: Postwar Painting, feature of which is the clear presence of a T, with a horizon-

Graphic Design, and cuts it in half. These lines simultaneously represent the three
corners of a triangle, one of the geometrical forms most used
Corporate Visual Culture by the artist. This structure presupposes a total consciousness
of the articulation of a series. Although works prior to Nega-
tions had been brought together in the manner of series (as
DANIEL GARZA USABIAGA with Seales [Signals], 1966-1972), this was the first to be
conceived as such by its author.
If the T is the reiterative structure that identifies this
set of paintings as a series, the solution of each individual
work is anything but monotonous repetition. No work is like
another, and they can be radically different from one to the
next. Rojo came to suggest that his intention was for them to
be exhibited as if different painters had made them, as an
exercise in variations on a single element.2 The negation in
Negations is directed, among other things, at the figure of
the author as well as at the series understood as a practice
in which uniform repetition prevails. Among the more than
one hundred paintings one finds solutions related to infor-
malism, geometric or post-pictorial abstraction, as well as
designs that could easily be referred to Rojos practice in the
fields of magazine publishing and editorial work. It would
be worthwhile to recall that during the years that he was
completing Negations, the artist was also developing a mon-
umental output of graphic designs for different magazines and
publishers. In fact, he acknowledges that his practices as an
artist and designer converge most clearly and evidently in this
series, which is demonstrated with the presence of the T.3
The relationship between art and design that we find in
Negations will be analyzed in this essay by means of the way

to) de toda abstraccin conceptual.
palabras. Palabras pensadas. Son palabras pensadas las
ideas de un artista? Piensa palabras al pintar o componer?
No creo.

Vicente Rojo is fundamentally an inward person. I say
Vicente Rojo: fundamentally because, to be sure, he is also an outward
person to the extent that every social being is. But he prefers
Painting Writing solitude over relation, the solitude of his inwardness: some-
thing that, though it might seem contradictory in a painter,
enables him, like a musician, to imagine aesthetic values
FEDERICO LVAREZ with his eyes closed. He has a certain shyness, too, if shy-
ness came out of intimacy rather than fear. And, within that
intimacy, there is a serene and intense passion, a classicism
that, as in every talented artist, is capable of denying itself,
of destroying itself, making the destruction of an order into
an objective, a goal. He has said it more than once, but now
that, in his latest exhibition, he is painting letters to great fig-
ures that he admires, his respect for the addressee has made
him put together the most classical and maybe the most beau-
tiful of his shows.
Since we are dealing with a painter, one might think
that said imagination is, redundantly, the reign of the omni-
present visual image, and hence divorced (image v. concept)
from all conceptual abstraction. This is that old problem: are
artists (musicians, painters, sculptors, dancers, actors and
Text originally published as: Federico lvarez, Vicente Rojo: pintar la escritura, actresses) intellectuals?
Revista de la Universidad de Mxico, num. 65, UNAM, July, 2009, p. 53-56. Rojo gives us the answer that is applicable to every true
artist: in him, that image is also an idea and, to that extent,
every great artist is someone who conceives ideas, an intel-
lectual. (Recall that oft-cited phrase of Leonardos: La pittu-
ra cosa mentalepainting is a mental thing.) Now then,
a philosopher is engulfed, solitary in a world of ideas, of
concepts, and those ideas and concepts are words. Words in
thought. Are an artists ideas also words in thought? Does he
or she think words by painting or composing? I dont think
so. Those ideas that he or she thinks are not verbal ideas
like those of the philosopher or the narrator: they are sound
ideas or visual ideas. Stravinskys mind, or Klees, was assid-
uously occupied with those non-verbal ideas. It was Czanne
who said: The stuff of our art is there, in what our eyes are
thinking. To think with ones eyes is to think images that
are obviously mental. They are image-ideas. This might
seem like an oxymoron, but it is far from being so.
The relationship between the image and the idea is
almost ontological when we are dealing with an exceptional
artist. Thus, too, as with Stravinsky and Klee, Vicente Rojo is
