Membean Vocabulary Program

Implementation in the 7th and 8th grades at CMS

What is it?
Membean is an online, self-paced vocabulary program. It differentiates the vocabulary to
individual students and provides multiple ways to learn words. The site tracks progress
and monitors the study habits of users.

When will I work on it?

All of your teachers believe very strongly that a solid foundation in reading and
vocabulary will improve your enjoyment of, and performance in, all of your classes. The
Science, Social Studies, and ELA departments have joined forces to enhance your
vocabulary prowess. You will get at least 15 minutes in each of these subjects every week
to meet your Membean goals. Occasionally, you may have Membean assigned as
homework from one teacher a week.

Grading: Students will be graded on two different aspects of the Membean program:

1. Membean effort (60%): using the system, as measured by computer-created

reports. In order for the program to work, it needs to be used often and with the
intent to learn each time you log in. The Membean Effort grade will be determined
by:
a. Time spent: at least 45 minutes of practice each week (Dubious Minutes will
be subtracted from this grade)
b. Progress made: you are learning new words and moving forward within the
program

2. Quizzes (40%): 3-4 vocabulary quizzes will be given in your ELA class e
ach
trimester. Quizzes will be announced in advance and are generated by the
Membean program to quiz only the words that you personally have studied. These
scores will be included in the Assessments portion of your grade.

Cheers from your Vocabulary Team,
