e Levee Cleanup is a fun community event. Volunteers
work in groups and are assigned cleanup areas with a map
to guide them. Children, adults and seniors are all welcome
and encouraged to get involved in this event. Each group
can handle their area at their own pace; everyone helps to
keep these beautiful levees debris-free. And the more help

END OF SUMMER HAPPENINGS IN RWS
Warmer weather and e Cocktail Monkeys drew a large crowd
at Marlin Park on Sunday, July 9th! Renee and the guys put on a
great show with exciting music, perfect vocal harmony, and
camaraderie. e combination of popular Rock, Pop and R&B
songs made for a very fun evening. e Meat Locker food truck
was on site to provide tasty dinner options.
e third, and final, Sounds of the Shores concert will be sunday,
august 13th from 5 - 7pm at Marlin Park. e Shanks are a
premier classic rock cover band in the SF Bay Area. Recently
honored as winners, and twice previously as runners-up, of the
KFOX 98.5 "Last Band Standing" competition hosted by Greg
Kihn; the competition seeks to identify the best cover bands in
the SF Bay Area. In addition to the concert, there will be a
redwood city sesquicentennial celebration with themed
crafts, games, a rock climbing wall and food trucks! See you there!

Marine Parkway Spot Repair Project
In June, the City of Redwood City approved a contract to move
forward with the Redwood Shores Marine Parkway Spot Repair
Project. Roadway pavement deteriorates over time due to
exposure to the elements and trac loads. Regular pavement
maintenance and repairs are necessary to maintain a pavement
in good condition and to extend the useful life of the roadway.
Marine Parkway in Redwood Shores serves as a major connector
between various residential neighborhoods and business areas,
and connects to Highway 101. Sections of pavement along
Marine Parkway have deteriorated and are in need of repair in
order to maintain the condition and safety of the roadway, and
to avoid further deterioration and more extensive repairs.
Segment 1 is near the Oracle Lagoon and Twin Dolphin Drive.
Segment 2 is from Bridge to Indian Creek Garden Apartments.
is project will remove and replace deteriorated sections of
pavement on Marine Parkway to provide an improved
pavement condition and extend the useful life of the pavement.
is project is consistent with the citys objective to maintain
a good city-wide pavement condition index.
Construction of the Marine Parkway Spot Repair Project is
anticipated to begin as early as mid-August. Notification of the
proposed work will be distributed to surrounding residents and
business owners in advance of the start of work. Large message
boards will be placed on site in advance of the start of the work
to notify motorists.

FROM THE M AYOR
Welcome back to the Shores! I was greeted with that
salutation by one of my favorite restaurateurs recently as my
wife and I have moved back to the Shores. Having lived in
four distinct neighborhoods in Redwood City (Farm Hill,
near downtown, Woodside Plaza and Redwood Shores),
I have been asked which area do you like best? e truth will be recognized in the following
is, I love them all for very dierent reasons. Each one has
things that are unique and dierent that makes it stand out
without taking away from any of the others. e diversity
of neighborhoods is one of the things that I love so much
about Redwood City, and I think it is often overlooked.
So, what do I love about the Shores?
e proximity to the water and the opportunity to experience
the diverse eco-system that it holds. I grew up in the forest,
not far from the ocean, and I have always loved being near
the water. Whether small rivers, open-ocean, or the sloughs
of the bay, it is a relaxing and beautiful environment.
e availability of neighborhood retail and restaurants. Food
and wine is a hobby Im passionate about and the Shores
provides its residents the chance to dine out at some fun and
excellent establishments. It also has convenient neighborhood
shopping that meets the needs of this home chef.
e planning of Redwood Shores, thanks in large part to
one of the founders, Don Warren, boasts some of the best
parks and walking paths in Redwood City. We are fortunate
to live in a community that includes a high density of open
space areas for us to enjoy. I love the pedestrian friendly
nature of the many small streets and main thoroughfares.
e community involvement of the residents of the Shores.
e RSCA, RSOA, various HOAs, and school groups are
prime examples of the way people in the Shores care about
and get involved in their community. Whether it is trac,
schools, public safety, the environment, or a number of
other issues, people in the Shores have unique concerns
about their community and I appreciate the questions and
feedback I receive from people and groups in the Shores.
e Shores is a beautiful and unique area and my wife and
I are excited to be back.

I T S E LEMENTARY
I hope that your summer is going well. Here at the school
district, our summer is wrapping up as we prepare for the
start of school on wednesday, august 23. Our enrollment is
increasing slightly to 4,325 students in grades TK to 8, though
our incoming kindergarten class is smaller than last years. is
is unusual for us because our kindergarten cohorts have grown
consistently for over a decade. Additionally, this year both
Sandpiper and Redwood Shores Elementary will have
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classes, which is a relatively new
program for students who historically have been our youngest,
turning 5 years of age between September 2 and December 2.
actiVity at our schools
As you may recall, we are expanding the facility at Sandpiper, in
partnership with Redwood City, to oer grades 6-8 locally in
the Shores. is year, Sandpiper will have a 6th grade class of 53
students. We have also added an assistant principal at the school
to support the expansion. Unfortunately, construction has gone
slowly, and the new building is expected to open after
anksgiving, later than the August opening for which we had
originally planned. e good news is that we will be able to start
school without any significant programmatic compromises, we
have complied with both the Citys and States regulatory
expectations, we have upgraded the foundation pad to ensure
the 2-story buildings stability, and we will have dual piping to
use recycled water when it is made available to the site.
As for Redwood Shores Elementary, it has hosted a number of
summer activities, including our Extended School Year
program for about 40 students receiving special services, a
summer camp, and a Peninsula Youth Orchestra program.
Principal Annie Cahoon had a successful first year, and we have
great plans for 2017-18.

innovation among our students, and one of the primary ways
that we plan to do this is through the new science standards,
nationally known as the Next Generation Science Standards.
Were excited about this work, and well keep you informed of
our progress over the course of the year.

State funding for education is relatively flat, and our costs are
growing faster than our revenues. e state legislature passed a
bill requiring all school districts to increase sta retirement
contributions by nearly 2% a year from 2014 to 2020. e
school districts overall cost increases for next year are above 5%.
In contrast, the states cost of living adjustment (COLA) for
public school districts is an increase of 1.57%. is gap between
expenditures and revenues eats into our reserve substantially over
the next three years, even after making reductions in contracts,
instructional materials, and technology. Sadly, Californias
education funding has yet to return to 2007-08 levels (adjusted
for inflation). e shortfall between the states target level of
funding for our school district and what well receive this year is
approximately $1 million, or $230/student. is is why local

sources of revenue, like donations to our education foundation
and the parcel tax, are so important to securing a quality
education for the children in our community.

Paper Making with Jamila Rufaro
In this fun and informative workshop, participants will create
sheets of paper from cotton fibers and recycled materials. In
addition to the basic technique of using a deckle and moulds to
make paper, youll learn how to add inclusions like flowers, plants
and thread into your paper to give it a more interesting look.
Youll also learn dierent ways to dry your paper. Participants will
take home several sheets of handmade paper that can be used for
cards, scrapbooking, drawing, painting, bookmaking, and more!
Paper making requires lots of water--wear clothing that you wont
mind getting wet. At the end of the class some papers may still
be wet. If you would like to take your damp papers home please
bring a cookie sheet or a flat bottomed plastic tub at least 6 by 8
inches for transport. Papers that are left behind will be collected
and donated to Artist Brian Taylor for use in his new site specific
commission for Redwood Citys Sesquicentennial year.

Cyanotype with Erin Ashford
Join us to learn one of the oldest photo-graphic processes, Cyanotype!
Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process that requires
treated paper, objects of your choice, direct sun, water to develop
the cyan-blue print and YOU! In this hands-on workshop, you
will explore the conceptual ins-and-outs of this 174-year-old
process once used for copying architectural drawings and
illustrating botanicals. e monochromatic prints are made using
a substrate that can handle being treated with a solution of iron
compounds, rinsed in a water bath and exposed using UV light
or direct sun. We provide all the materials youll need but
recommend bringing a few objects to make your own unique
impressions. We provide a brief history of cyanotypes, a
demonstration of the process and guidance in creating your own
unique works. Each participant will receive 3 sheets of 5x7 treated
paper, gloves and sample objects. Once your cyanotype pigment
has set, you are welcome to leave your cyanotypes to fully dry or
bring something to carry the wet paper home. At the end of the
workshop, we ask that you donate one cyanotype for use in a new
artwork celebrating Redwood City in our Sesquicentennial year.

2 bell peppers, green and red, stem removed and cut in half
1 small to medium sized red onion cut into 1/2-inch slices
1/2 pineapple, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices
1/2 cup artichoke leaves
2 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
2 tbsp coriander powder
2 tbsp curry powder
1/4 cup fresh whole garlic cloves
1/2 cup olive oil
directions
Cut vegetables, paneer, and pineapple to specified sizes. In a
mini food processor, combine garlic cloves and 1/4 cup olive
oil. Pulse until garlic is finely chopped. Rub garlic and oil
mixture on vegetables and pineapple.
Assemble all other spices to create a marinade for the paneer.
Combine cumin powder, salt, black pepper, coriander powder
and curry powder in a bowl and mix. en, rub the spice blend
onto the paneer.
Brush hot grill with the remaining 1/4 cup of the olive oil. Place
vegetables, pineapple and paneer on the grill. Cook until al
dente with grill marks. Should take 2 to 3 minutes to cook on
each side. Remove from grill.
Cut toppings into cubed pieces. Layer pizza dough with marinara
sauce, then vegetables, paneer and pineapple. Cook on the grill
for approximately 10 minutes or until the crust is crisp and dough
is cooked. Note: Make sure to cover the grill with the lid.
Cut pizza into strips, three strips per appetizer portion. Plate
pizza bites in the center. Garnish platter with a dollop of the
remaining marinara sauce on both ends.

(How a Connecticut Yankee embraced California Cuisine)

hot august nights
When our summer weather turns hot and the evenings are still
warm, it seems our appetites languish. is is a wonderful time for
a light salad with fresh grilled vegetables, stone fruit or a small piece
of grilled salmon or grilled chicken breast. By eating lightly, there
is room for a scrumptious, soothing dessert. ere is nothing better
than a cool panna cotta to finish o a summer meal. I fell in love
with panna cotta the very first time I tried it, and always look for it
on the menu when we are dining out. Panna cotta means cooked
cream and was originally from the Northern Italian region of
Piemonte. e desserts are softly set and creamy, and are perfect for
a dinner party or special dessert because they can be made ahead of
time and kept refrigerated until ready to serve.
ere are so many creative variations to flavor the dessert - this recipe
uses balsamic flavored strawberries as an accompaniment, but you
can use fresh raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and even other
ripe stone fruits, such as cherries, peaches or apricots just remove
the pits and peels if necessary and slice them into bite-sizes pieces.
Panna cotta with balsaMic strawberries
Packet (1 teaspoon) unflavored Gelatin Powder
1 Tablespoons Cold Water
1 Cups Heavy Cream
1 Cup Plain Whole Milk Yogurt
1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Vanilla Bean, split and seeds scraped
1/3 Cup Sugar, plus 1 Tablespoon
2 Pints (4 Cups) Sliced Fresh Strawberries
2 Tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar
1 Tablespoon Sugar
Teaspoon Freshly Grated Black Pepper
Freshly Grated Lemon Zest, for serving
In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin on 1 Tablespoons of cold
water. Stir, and set aside for 10 minute to allow gelatin to dissolve.
In a medium bowl, whisk together of the Heavy Cream, the
yogurt, vanilla extract, and vanilla bean seeds. Heat the remaining
Cup of Heavy Cream and the 1/3 Cup of Sugar in a small
saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Remove from
heat, and add the softened gelatin to the hot cream mixture, and stir
to combine. Pour into 4 (6 - 8 ounce) ramekins or custard cups and
refrigerate uncovered until cold. When the panna cottas are
thoroughly chilled, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Combine the sliced strawberries, balsamic vinegar, 1 Tablespoon
Sugar, and ground pepper 30 - 45 minutes before serving. Set
aside at room temperature.
To serve, run a small knife around each dessert in the ramekin,
and dip the ramekin QUICKLY into a bowl of hot tap water.
Invert each ramekin onto a pretty dessert plate, and surround the
panna cotta with the strawberries. Dust tops of panna cotta lightly
with freshly grated lemon zest, and serve. Makes 4 Servings.

Now that we are in August, with the start of the new school year
right around the corner and summer coming into the homestretch,
many people will be looking to take that one last trip to somewhere
other than where they are. Call it a vacation, a get-away, a trip, or
just plain traveling, many folks will spend anywhere from a weekend
to a couple of weeks away. Away from work; away from home; and
away from church. Lets face it. For many, going to church is as much
of an obligation as working or going to school. So when it comes
time to go away and take a break from the job or from school,
they also equate it as a time to take a break from going to church.
Wouldnt it be great, though, if there were churches in the cities to
which people were traveling? Im sure if any Christian knew there
was a church within a few miles of Disneyland, they would make
the eort to go, right? Well actually, the number of churches in the
greater Disneyland area is almost equivalent to the number of rides
the park has to oer! Would that be enough to spend an hour or so
with the Lord before an entire day with Mickey, Donald and Goofy?
ough not much thought is given to it, wherever one decides to
vacation, there is at least one, if not multiple Churches nearby.
For example (for Catholics specifically), there are three Churches
in Honolulu near Waikiki Beach; and thats just near the beach.
ere is El Cristo Rey Catholic Church near the Grand Canyon.
ere is Our Lady of the Pines Church, Church of St. Anthony
and St. William Church near Yellowstone. ere is a veritable
jackpot of Churches in Las Vegas. Elect to go to St. Patricks
Cathedral, St. Stephen-Martyr Church or Cathedral of St. Matthew
the Apostle in Washington, D.C. Mix your Rosary beads with
your Mardi Gras beads at any one of the 15+ Catholic Churches
in the French Quarter. Or get your Glory, Glory, Hallelujah! on
at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Augustine Catholic Church or
St. Cecilia's Church all within Elvis haunting distance of Graceland.
In fact, the city/county of San Francisco alone has 46 Catholic
Churches. However, the San Francisco Archdiocese doesnt just
include San Francisco, but San Mateo and Marin Counties as well
and all the churches therein. ere are more than 640 archdioceses
and 2,206 dioceses worldwide, so there is bound to be a Church
wherever you may be, whenever you may be there.
Could it be that there was a divine plan for it to be that way?
Every town in which St. Paul stopped along his travels, he established
a church so that when Christians would travel from town to town,
be it for business or to visit relatives or whatever, there would be
church for them to attend. When St. Junipero Serra established his
chain of 21 missions along the El Camino Real, it was for the precise
purposes of having a place for travelers to pray and worship as they
made their way up and down California.
A summer ago, my family and I spent some time in the Monterey
area. In preparation of my oldest son starting 4th grade and studying
the missions, we took a side trip to Mission Carmel to explore. A
bonus of the trip was being able to attend a Mass celebrated in the
Missions Blessed Sacrament Chapel. And it wasnt even a Sunday;
we just went anyway. Can you imagine? It was as if St. Junipero
Serra built that mission just for us. Which, in a way, he did.
If your friends or family visit this summer (or fall or winter or
whenever), and theyre in the need of some down home religion,
bring them by St. Mark Catholic Church. We might not be their
hometown Church, but at least were playing on the same team!

Even though it was still four days before the ocial start of
summer, the day of the June tournament was as hot as
summer gets here in the Bay Area. e mixed scramble
format matched the players with various partners and
opponents as well as courts. Everyone enjoyed the newly
renovated Shorebird and Quay courts. is was the first time
the club played on the new Quay courts, which boast an
open two-court space surrounded
by new fencing. Despite the hot
weather, players enjoyed five or six
rounds of tennis and sought out
the shade for between-rounds
recovery. Evelyn Sell earned first
place in the womens division.
Second place had three women
tied, with Ruth Waters emerging
the winner. Valery Soloviev took
first place on the mens side and
John Jordan second place.
e theme for the evening social at Jay and Irene Muzios
home was Nothing but Noodles. Members rose to the
challenge of thinking beyond the obvious and considering
noodles from all cultures. e resulting meal was a
combination of Italian, Indian, Chinese, Jewish and Japanese
dishes. e most creative interpretation of the theme was a
chocolate cake with RSTC written in noodles on top. All
of this was enjoyed outdoors in the warm evening air.
As is always the case, the success of the tournament and
social is the result of the work and generosity of Redwood
Shores members. anks go to John Hogan for creating the

cold drinks
to the
courts.
Upcoming events are the open play on August 6 and the
tournament on August 13; the latter features the annual

Hmmm... Havent seen goats
feasting on the bumper crop of
weeds and other foliage growing
wild along levee trails. ere was
a whole herd munching with
abandon about this time last
year, like a crowd of diners at an all-you-can eat buet.
After our record, soggy winter and many warm, summer days
spurring the growth of wild foliage, I began to wonder if the
goats would be back for an encore. So I checked out the levee
trail, but didnt see the herd. ere was, however, some really
nifty equipment mowing wild foliage, a combination tractor
and mower, and it was trimming weeds even in rough terrain,
in those hard-to-reach, rutty, rocky places.
ats okay when theres a range of options for clearing wild
vegetation, either a herd of goats or mowing equipment. But
I wondered how the goats might have been informed about
the change in plans. Maybe the herds team leader -- a goat
named Billy? -- stops by for a chat with the boss. And maybe
the boss says something like...
Billy, your team crushed it last year! Outstanding numbers!
Im sure youve seen the spreadsheets and flow charts. Your
teams consumption metrics, its chew rate, exceeded prior-
year chew by 15%. You left everyone in your dust. With
numbers like that, doubling your territory was on our
drawing board. Goat power, my friend, thats our mantra
as you well know.
But you know what they say, that the only thing that is
constant is change. Didnt the Greek philosopher Heraclitus
mention that? Well, thats the challenge for us right now,
Billy. ere are some headwinds this year, but no worries.
Were laser focused on what we need to do going forward.
Were pedal to the metal, I can assure you. So stay focused
and goal-oriented. Keep everyone fired up. Make sure your
teammates never lose their appetite for this business.
By the way, Billy. Hows your 401k? Is
your resume up to date? Just asking!
