METAMORPHOSIS 13th May 2017 The Crypt, St. Lukes METAMORPHOSIS / mete’ mo:fasis, metamo:'fausis/ ‘a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one’ METAMORPHOSIS is an exhibition of artwork created by Cork Educate Together Secondary School students over the past year, in collaboration with Sample-Studios members and TACTIC. As these students began their first year in a brand new school, the very first Educate Together Secondary School in Cork, through their art class they explored ideas of change and transformation, as it occurs in their personal lives, nature and the environment, story telling and character development, fashion, social media and pop culture. Together with Sample-Studios artists, the students developed these ideas and learned new creative skills such as printmaking, digital drawing, stitching and textile design with Killian O'Dwyer, Aideen Quirke, Lesley Stothers, Paul McKenna. Beginning with studio visits at the beginning of the academic year last August, these students have been mentored by Sample-Studios artists to encourage experimentation, documentation and creative learning through art in this collaborative exchange. Led by TACTIC programmer Emily O'Flynn, the students have formed a curatorial team to interpret and curate the exhibition. Abbie Condon “Good Vibes Only” is comprised of Abby’s favourite colours. The peace sign coupled with cactus and her self-portrait with hat and heart give us a sense of summer fun S HAPPINESS ‘S Bl BLUE SKIES Jodie Condon “Happiness is Big Waves and Blue Skies” is a piece that sums up Jodie’s love of the beach and the happiness she finds in big waves and blue skys. Noah Dasle Noah’s work explores themes in sport surrounding physical and mental training and stamina. “You have to train to get to where you want to go” Noah explains Dylan Feller Dylan’s work explores ideas of duality through costume. A self-portrait of the artist, we note that the right side more ornate in contrast to the left. Kaya Ray Fiessler Kaya’s work explores the emotional impact, and effect bullying can have on someone in four stages - yellow: happiness, red: a worsening state, blue; sadness and grey: hopelessness Julie Hrusova Julie’s monoprint of a spirit wolf is atmospheric and bold. She see’s the wolf as a guardian or spirit animal and has decorated his chest with a tattoo marking. Realta Lawton Realta enjoys painting and drawing and is currently creating her own graphic novel. She enjoys the expressiveness this allows her, as well as enjoying creating something beautiful. Maya McGrath Maya’s monoprint represents the four seasons in one picture. It features the beach-which Maya loves- as well as the leafless tree and sun. It is an edition of 4 Jack O’Callaghan Jack’s monoprint features a Viking long boat, which Jack considers to be a very simple, and beautiful design. He has an interest in the Viking history of Cork and describes them as master boat builders. Failenn O’Dwyer Failenn, pictured here with screen printing screen dyed green from the photo-sensitive emulsion, enjoys creating collages and working in her sketchbook. Abby O'Riordan “Fire is Fashion” is the message of Abby’s piece, in which she combines imagery of birds and nature, with tee-shirt and flaming skirt, all hand sewn by the artist herself. Freyja O'Sullivan Freyja’s piece is concerned with themes of secrecy. Developed from drawings in her sketchbook, it is a fabric piece depicting the eye, with subtle mesh layer overlapping to create eyelid and lashes. Tommaso Parisi Tommaso’s piece is a soccer themed self-portrait. To bring atmosphere to the piece Tommaso has added a dark forest scene and has stenciled soccer boot prints as a finishing design. Suil Pinagli-Murphy Suil’s work is an exploration of the changes in nature, as plants grow from bulb to flower and butterflies flutter having metamorphosised from a caterpillar. She particularly likes to use momigami in her work. Ine Rammeloo Ine self-portrait also depicts her dog as a puppy, with stenciling work done to capture her love of nature. Blue and yellow flowers float by while birds sit on the wire of Ine’s work. Josh Redmond Josh’s work explores theme's of duality and opposites; love and hate, strength and weakness. He is influenced by his love of music and hip-hop and uses this as a way of expressing himself and communicating with the world. Siobhan Roseno Siobhan is interested in Japanese culture and has combined stenciling, momigami and a digital anime drawing she did of herself to create this finished piece. Bernard Skonieczna Bernard’s work depicts a dystopian future. Set on an artificial floating world, his piece represents nature's struggle to resist the ever approaching industrial factories, with their smoke filled chimneys. Oskar McCallion Oscar’s work deals with the ideas and dangers of societies beauty standards. “Gorgeous” is an investigation into what beauty means today. Filip Tatarynowicz Filip’s self-portrait is music themed and centers around his love for electronic dance music and chill-hop. He has recently released his first two chill-hop tracks and depicts his love of music here through stenciling and digital print on fabric. Stefan Miskovic Stefan’s love and proficiency in Photoshop are evident in his somewhat humourous self-portrait piece, where he has photoshopped his head into place as the basketball Miriam Skonieczna Miriam is interested in dress design Allannah Campbell Brookes Allannah is interested in nature and Japanese culture. In this piece, she has depicted eyes, an umbrella, and raindrops. Abbie Deeney Abbie’s work is a screen printed piece. It depicts nature being transformed and changed by the city. Jurie El-Shenawi “If my wings could fly” is a screen printed piece by Jurie, with a butterfly motif. Rosie Fletcher-White Rosie is interested in space, planets and stars. Stephen Hurly Stephen's self-portrait depicts his linterest in music. Tom Humphrys Tom has created a tea pot set. He is interested in the design and enjoys the creative process. Ciana Ishaque Ciana’s self-portrait piece also represents her love of cats with the use of stenciling. Elaina Laffan Twomey Elaina is interested in the development of characters and how they morph into more powerful beings. CJ Joya CJ’s piece shows the change from night to day. Thauanna Menezes Nathan Maher Nathan's fabric piece depicts his interest in reading. Samhain Mohally Samhain’s piece is a screen printed self-portrait. Josh O'Mahony Josh’s piece is a screen print depicting a battle scene. Alex O'Regan Alex work deals with elements of war. Dani O'Neill Dani’s piece is inspired by Picasso and features a host of reds, blues and greys. Udo Raposo Udo's screenprint depicts a dolphin. Jessa Walsh Jessa’s work is an intricate self-portrait and digital fabric print. Lana Abelitie Aysha Santos Lauren Johnson Lauren's atmospheric piece depicts stenciled skulls that seem to appear from a foggy background.
