ELE 101: BASIC ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY


Time: 3 hours 10 DECEMBER 2013 Max. Marks: 50
Note : Answer any FIVE full questions.

1A. Find the potential drop across 3 resistor in the circuit of Fig.1A using Source Transformation
Technique (03)
1B. For the Fig.1B, use node voltage analysis to determine Vx and Ix. (05)
1C. Derive expressions for the current in the inductor and voltage across the inductor in series R-L circuit
connected to dc voltage of V volts at time t = 0. Plot the current and voltage response. (02)

2A. Three coils are connected in series as shown in Fig. 2A, Determine the equivalent inductance. (02)
2B. A 700 turns coil is wound on the central limb of the cast steel symmetrical frame of uniform cross
section 20 cm2 is as shown. Calculate the current required to produce a flux of 1.55mWb in an air gap
of 0.25 cm length. Given lAFEB = lACDB = 25 cm, lAB = 12.5 cm. The magnetization details is as follows:

2C. Two similar coils have a coupling co-efficient of 65%. When they are connected in series aiding, the
total inductance is 400mH. Determine (a) self-inductance of both the coils, (b) total inductance when
the coils are connected in series opposition, (c) total magnetic energy due to a current of 5A when the
coils are connected in (i) series aiding, and (ii) series opposition (02)

3A. For the single phase AC series circuit shown in Fig.3A find the value of RL and L. Find the source
voltage if the frequency of the supply is 50Hz and the current flowing through the circuit is 5A. Draw
the phasor diagram and determine the overall power factor of the circuit. (05)
3B. For a single phase AC circuit shown in Fig.3B. Find C for resonance to occur at the supply frequency.
Find the total impedance z and total current I at the resonance. (05)

4A. Using instantaneous values prove that 2 wattmeters are needed for the three phase power
measurements for a Star connected load. (03)
4B. A 3 phase, RYB sequence, 400V supply is connected to unbalanced delta load. The load impedances
are ZRY = 10 700 ZYB = 15 300 ZBR = 20 - 450 . With VRY as reference, determine i) the three
phase current ii) three line currents iii) draw the phasor diagram. (05)
4C. Explain the effect of different load power factors on two wattmeter readings for the measurement of
three phase power. (02)

5A. A 1100/220V single phase transformer circuit is shown in Fig.5A, when primary winding is connected
to 1100V, the current through the load is 50 A at 0.8 pf lag.
i. Find the equivalent resistance and reactance of the transformer referred to primary side
ii. Draw the equivalent circuit as referred to primary side
iii. Also find the No-load current, primary side supply current and primary side power factor. (05)
5B. Fom fundamentals derive the expressions for the emfs induced in the transformer. (02)
5C. Show, how a rotating magnetic field of constant magnitude is produced in stator winding of three
phase induction motor. (03)

6A. Draw and explain the torque-slip characteristics of a 3-phase Induction motor and mark the salient
points. (03)
6B. A 3 phase, 50 Hz, 6 pole induction motor has star connected rotor, per phase rotor resistance 0.1 ohm
and per phase standstill rotor reactance 2 ohm. If the induced emf between the slip rings is 90 volts at
standstill and full load speed is 960 rpm, determine
i. Find per phase rotor induced emf at standstill.
ii. Full load slip
iii. rotor induced emf at full load
iv. rotor current at full load. (04)
6C. With a neat sketch, explain the operating principle of the permanent magnet moving coil instrument. (02)
