Maxithlon moderators guide

1. How to be a Maxithlon-Moderator
This guide is made to help you, Moderators, with your job. If you have questions, please contact one
of the Maxi-Moderators.

We first want to congratulate you for being chosen as a Maxithlon-Moderator.

As you are assigned the role of Moderator, you will have access to some new tools and to a new
federation.

2. Your job
The first thing you should do, is to read the Moderator Guidelines (this document). You'll find it in the
Moderator-board of the STAFF-federation. You can check the content at the end of this document to
find specific items you are looking for.

You are the representative of Maxithlon on the federations. You should make sure that your national
federation is a nice place to be for everyone. You should keep it clean and peaceful.

Normally, you don't need to ban users to achieve this, but sometimes you will have to. If you do so,
try to explain to the user what he did wrong, so he (hopefully) won't do it again.

Another challenge for the Moderator, is to try to keep his national federation active (and alive). To
achieve this, you can open some interesting topics from time to time. You'll get some examples later
in this document.

Another part of your job is to see if the information on your national federations is correct. For
example, if a newbie asks a question, verify the given answers, and if necessary, correct them.

Finally, every member of staff is invited to get involved in discussing changes in the game and the
game rules. To achieve this, you can participate in the Ideas board in the Staff federation or even
open topics from time to time. You'll get some more information about this later in this document.

3. Different boards in your federation

Every national federation has one basic board:

- General

Every federation can have up to five boards, so if you want one or two extra boards, you can contact
one of the Maxi-Moderators. They will do it for you.

Two important sections may be:

- Questions/Help
- Off-topic

Some example of other extra boards:

- Suggestions/Ideas
- National League
- Championships (Regional, National, ...)

4. General policies
4.1 Signatures
Every user can sign his forum post with his name. This is not considered as a signature.

A signature is a small piece of text, used to personalize your posts.

This is a Maxitrainer feature only, and thus, a non-Maxitrainer is not allowed to create one on his
own.

4.2 Advertising a federation

Federations can be advertised only once per season in the national federation and in other
federations to which the private one has specific relevance, and it will not be considered SPAM. The
title of the thread must have a tag [FED] so everyone can easily find it, and it's not allowed to discuss
in it. After the first post the thread should be closed as soon as you read it: if there are already more
than one post, delete the ones after the first. The thread should be closed with a post saying
something like "Fed adjustment made".

4.3 Politics and religions

Discussions about politics and religions do always go overboard. That is why they are not allowed at
all on the national federations.

5. Staff federation
Since you're now member of the staff, you are granted access to one official federation: STAFF.

You now have access to at least three boards in this federation: International, Moderator's board and
Idea's Board.

The only language allowed is English. That's actually the language for all communication between
staff members.

5.1 International
This board is used for STAFF-related issues. Every discussion or any question that can't or shouldn't
be discussed openly, belongs to this board. Every crewmember (Administrator, Operator, Moderator
& Translator) has access to this board. Don't use this board for Moderator-issues.

5.2 Moderator's board

This is the most important board of course. We encourage you (and strongly advice you) to take part
in the discussions on this board. We expect you to read and to understand everything on this board.
If you have MOD-related questions, you can ask them on this board. Only Administrators, Operators
and Moderators have access to this board.

5.3 Idea's Board

The purpose of this board is to increase the idea's sharing and create for every single ideas or bugs a
single thread. Here you should posts ideas, suggestions or bugs which are posted on the feds,
specially yours. Also, we encourage you to post your ideas, suggestions and bugs in order to improve
the game. Please review the rules to post on this board on the topic named Idea's board - rules.

6. Your challenge
As said in the introduction of this document, your biggest challenge will be to keep your national
federation active. You can achieve this by opening some interesting threads now and then. In the
next chapter, you'll find some examples of those threads.

6.1 Possible topics on the General-board

6.1.1 When necessary
[News] Title
Every time a new news-message is published, you can open a topic about it. In this topic, you can
discuss the new rules/features/...

[Version] X.XX
Every time a new Maxithlon-version is published, you can open a topic about it to talk about the
novelties. Remember that some features are Staff-only: you are not allowed to post them on your
national federation.

6.1.2 Every change of season

[Season XX] Goals
During the change of season, you can open a survey about the season's goals.

Possible options:

- Promotion in NL
- Individual Championships
- Bye new athletes
- Arena construction
- Better economy
- ...

[Season XX] Who will win the NL

During the change of season, you can open a survey with the names of the best teams of your
country in the Golden League.

[Season XX] Training retreat

During the change of season, you can open a survey, asking how much money every user has spent
for the training retreat.

[Youngsters] Season XX
During the change of season, you can open a topic where, weekly, users can post their new young
athletes.

6.1.3 Seven days before the event

[Season XX] Regional Individual Championship
A week before the Regional Individual Championship starts, you can open a topic with a text like this
one:

I want to remember to all that on [date], there will be the Regional Individual Championship.

Every athlete, born in our country, can be enrolled in maximum 2 events in the
Championship that takes place in the same region as the club of the user.

Document1Maxithlon moderators guide 2017.docx Page 3/13

Maxithlon moderators guide August 2017

Every team can enroll a maximum of 2 athletes for every discipline.

The athlete who wins the race, is the regional champion of the discipline for this season.

Qualification to the National Individual Championship:

1. The first n athletes for every discipline of every region (on the Regional Individual
Championship) qualify for the National Individual Championship (where n is different for
every region). To see n for your region, see the page of your country.

2. The first three athletes of the season ranking for every discipline also qualify for the
National Individual Championship. This is the only way to qualify your foreign athletes to the
National Individual Championship of their country.

For the ranking, click [url=/varie/graduatorie.php]here[/url], and filter:

- Continent: none
- Nation: none
- Region: none
- Season: [the number of the season]
- Nationality: the nationality of your athlete
- Category: none *Discipline: the discipline of your athlete
- Sex: the sex of your athlete

If your athlete is in the top 3 on [date] (Friday before the National Individual Championship),
he/she will get an invitation. Commented [JDM1]: Or 4th if at least 1 player above
him/her is retired
[Season XX] Regional Club Championship
A week before the Regional Club Championship starts, you can open a topic with a text like
this one:

I want to remember to all that on [date], there will be the Regional Club Championship

Every club can participate in the Regional Club Championship of its region.

Every club can enroll only one athlete for every discipline.

The final score will be the sum of the races point of the athlete of the club.

The club that will have the most points, will be the Regional Club Champion of this season.

Qualification to the National Club Championship:

1. The first n clubs in every region (n changes in every region) qualify for the National Club
Championship. To see n for your region, see the page of your country.

2. The 20 clubs with the highest score in the Club Regional Championships will automatically
receive an invitation to the National competition. If some of these clubs had already received
the invitation to the National Championship, there will not be an additional redrawing.
Invitations will be sent the Friday following the Regional Championships.

[Season XX] National Individual Championship

A week before the National Individual Championship starts, you can open a topic about it.

Document1Maxithlon moderators guide 2017.docx Page 4/13

[Season XX] National Club Championship

A week before the National Club Championship starts, you can open a topic about it.

6.1.4 At the beginning of the season, when there is an international competition

[Season XX] Junior World Championship
When there is a Junior World Championship, you can open a topic at the beginning of the season,
with a text like this one: Commented [JDM2]: Why should this be placed at the
beginning of the season and for example the Nat. Ind. CS
I want to remember to all that on [date], there will be the Junior World Championship. only one week in advance?

How to qualify: The first 30 athletes of the junior (age 14-17) world ranking in each discipline
will be invited.

For the ranking, click [url=/varie/graduatorie.php]here[/url], and filter:

- Continent: none
- Nation: none
- Region: none
- Season: [the number of the season]
- Nationality: the nationality of your athlete
- Category: junior
- Discipline: the discipline of your athlete
- Sex: the sex of your athlete

If your athlete is in the top 30 on [date] (Friday before the Junior World Championship),
he/she will get an invitation.

6.1.5 Possible topics in the Off-topic-board

What song are you listening to?
What is the last movie that you've seen?
Which book are you reading for the moment?
...

6.2 Sticky
6.2.1 Introduction
Another useful tool on the federations, is the 'sticky' tool.

A sticky is a thread, which is always visible at the top of the board.

Use this tool properly just for important topics.

Every board (so, not only one in the whole federation, but really one in every board) is required to
contain a closed sticky with the forum rules (see later in this document):

6.2.2 Forum rules

[Forumrules] Last update (XX/XX/XXXX)
This topic has to be in the local language(s) AND in English. Commented [JDM3]: Why in English? Several
players/nations don't understand it, I assume.

Maxithlon moderators guide August 2017

6.2.3 Other possible stickies

Help Maxithlon!
Which specialty?
How to start?
Software and useful tools!

7. The mighty forum rules

The required sticky in every board of your conference, should contain those forum rules! You should
literally translate them. Never change them on your own!

Just like in other forums, we need a set of rules to keep the forum pleasant and within reach
of all users. We know that a set of rules will never be able to cover all the possible situations
that can happen in the life of a community, so we trust on your common sense for all the
situations still not regulated. We state precisely that the moderators have the decisional
power in all the situations still not regulated according to the game spirit and the spirit of
these set of rules.

Here is the set of rules that we have to respect inside the Federations.

Please, use the right board of the Federation when you want to open a topic:

- General: In this section you can have discussions related to the game and, in general,
all arguments not present in the other sections
- Questions/Help: Here you can open topics in case of questions. This section is
especially useful for new users (but for the veterans too...) to ask questions about
the game
- Off-topic: Here you can discuss all the non-forbidden topics that have nothing to do
with Maxithlon

The languages you can use in this Federation are [local languages] and English.

If you want to contact the staff to report a bug, you have to use the contact module or
you can write to world@maxithlon.com. In the mail you have to report the page and an Commented [JDM4]: Is this mailadress visible on the site
explanation of the bug. (I don't see it :-))

BASIC RULES OF FEDERATION

In the Federations it is strictly FORBIDDEN:

- to post something about staff-decisions (Operators and Moderators). This actually

includes making visible and/or discussing staff's decision. If it's necessary to discuss a
moderator's decision with the staff it is only possible via private message. If it's
necessary to discuss an operator's decision with the staff it is possible via
world@maxithlon.com or via the contact module
- to report or to accuse someone of cheating. If you want to to do that, please contact
the staff using the contact module.
- to use too much swearwords, capital letters (especially in the headlines), formatted
text (bold, coloured, italic, ...). Besides, don't write using the "mobile phone style".
You are writing in a forum, without any reasonable limit of space (like in SMS) or
time (like in a chat).

Document1Maxithlon moderators guide 2017.docx Page 6/13

- to give notice of buying and selling athletes: you have the Announcement-section to
do this, selecting carefully the right section for your announce.
- to advertise or to request a meeting: you have the Announcement-section to do this,
selecting carefully the right section for your announce. Commented [JDM5]: I realy want to discuss this. I agree
- to SPAM (i.e. to post multiple times the same message or topic, to bump, or to we should have rules; but we have to aknowledge that the
Announcemensection doesn't work. Why should it be a
attend to the discussions with arguments not related to, etc.). problem if one topic for selling a player or hosting a game
- to make personal attacks against other users, nations or religions. will be made where once a transfer/meeting may be
- to make posts to reach a personal (economic) profit (referral links, selling things in placed? Now people should get an 'unofficial fed' what
means that activity is spread. I realy want this to be
real life, advertising, ...).
changed.
- to ask for assistance regarding (or talk about) cracks or protection code of any game
or program.
- to promote or to talk about illegal activities or the use of illegal materials (i.e. drugs).
- to open discussions about politics or religions.
- to open discussions or to write messages with pornographic contents.

It's possible to:

- open only one thread advertising a federation only once per season. This can be
done in the national federation and in other federations to which the private one has
specific relevance, and it will not be consider SPAM. The title of the thread must
have a tag [FED] so everyone can easily find it, and it's not allowed to discuss in it. Commented [JDM6]: Can't it be good that other users
After the first post the thread will be closed as soon as a moderator reads it: any post can add their experience from a certain federation? If many
like it, people will join. I think it would be usefull.
after the first will be deleted.

PUNISHMENTS

Those who don't respect this set of rules, risk a temporary removal from the Federations
(temporary ban), a definitive removal from the Federations (definitive ban) or a removal
from the game. The controversial messages can be deleted and the topics can be closed
or deleted by the staff.

Contact a Maxi-Moderator if it's the third infraction of a user. They will decide whether the user
deserves an extra fine or not. Commented [JDM7]: What about 'getting a parol' after a
certain amount of time? for example: a punishment from

Maxithlon moderators guide August 2017

* = Ban the user for 3 days and contact a Maxi-Moderator as soon as possible. They will take the
(final) decision.

8.1 What should you do, if you see an infraction?

First, you have to edit the post or close the topic. Whether you should edit the post or close the topic
depends on the kind of infraction. For example, if someone opens similar topics (SPAM), you have to
close them. If someone posts a transfer-ad in a topic, you have to edit (i.e. delete) the post. If you Commented [JDM8]: It would be great if we could delete
edit a post, make a print-screen of this post. This way, later, it's easier to know what it was about. a topic/thread. Now we only can edit it.

If you're not sure about the punishment, you can ask the Maxi-Moderators or you can ask it on the
Moderator-board.

If you know what the punishment has to be, send a personal message to the user in which you
explain what he did wrong and what the punishment is. Stress the fact that, in case of a next similar
infraction, the punishment will be heavier, as you can see in the pricelist.

If necessary, ban the user.

In both cases (warning and ban), make a note in the user history (in English!) in the format:

"Rule - Punishment"

e.g. "Spam - warning", or "Personal profit - 5 days"

If you go to your federation, and click on 'MODERATION', you will see the image below.

You will be able to select a user of the federation.

Here you can add a note to the user who made an infraction.

Select the correct user and click on 'Display notes'. You'll see a screen where you can read the notes
and add notes for this user.

When you click on 'MODERATION', you'll see a screen where you can ban a user (if necessary). You
just have to select the right user and fill in the number of days.

If you did it correctly, the name of the banned user will appear in the list.

Below, you'll find an example of a message to a user:

Hi [username],

Document1Maxithlon moderators guide 2017.docx Page 8/13

Maxithlon moderators guide August 2017

In the topic "[title]", you ... [infraction].

This time, the Maxithlon-staff decided to only give you a warning.

Next time, the punishment will be heavier.

Kind regards,

[Your username]

9. Some general things

- Normally, we don't close topics if it's not necessary. If someone opens a topic with a question,
don't close the topic when the question is answered. It's possible that someone else has a
similar question. This way, this user doesn't have to open a new topic.
- If you want some opinions about an infraction, you can open a topic on the Moderator-board.
Include in the first post a link to the topic, the user and the infraction.
- Always make a print-screen of the topic you are modifying/deleting before doing any change:
in this way if the user complains about your decision you have the proof for your decision. If
you want to show the print screen of an infraction on the Moderator-board, you can use
'Imageshack' to upload the image.
- Capital letters and formatted text is allowed in limited extent. Don't start punishing people
because they use some bold words. Only punish them, if it's really annoying. - Always sign 'the
ban mail' with your username.
- Try to be consistent when handling out warnings and bans. If one user gets punished because
of an infraction, another user, who does the same infraction, should also be punished.
- Never tell the users what 'powers' you have. If they ask something about it, just tell them that
you're not allowed to talk about it.
- Even if you disagree with a particular rule, you still have to enforce it.
- Before you close a topic, always post a message in which you explain why the topic has to be
closed. Most of the time, experienced users know why you close the topic, but newbies don't.
- About pornographic contents:
Pictures of nude female: If there is a nipple or a genital part visible, it is not allowed.
Pictures of nude male: If there is a genital part visible, it is not allowed.
Pictures of 'action': It's never allowed (even if there is nothing visible).
- If you, as a Moderator, have the feeling that you're in need of a second Moderator, don't
hesitate to contact the Maxi-Moderators. Together we will look for a good candidate.

10. Administrators of the Federation

Some of our more experienced Moderators will receive the hat of 'Administrator of the Federation'.

They are able to:

- create new boards

- rename boards
