The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that canchange everyday
life.

Faculty of Engineering
Department of Marine Technology

PhD position within Marine Hydrodynamics (IV-136/17)

Description
We have an open PhD position related to design and hydroelastic analysis of propellers and azimuth thrusters.

Ship propellers are traditionally made of metal and are rather stiff, such that their elastic deformation is usually negligible. In this project, we
aim at developing flexible propellers, which adapt their shape to different load cases and flow fields through elastic deformation imposed
by the hydrodynamic loads. On the other hand, it has been found that the housing of azimuth thrusters can undergo elastic deformation that
is problematic for the durability of the thrusters, so there is a clear need to take the flexibility into account in a constructive manner at the
design stage. To optimize the design of flexible propellers and azimuth thrusters, it is necessary to accurately predict the hydrodynamic
loads, the elastic deformations, and the interaction between these two fields, referred to as Fluid-Structure-Interaction (FSI), through
numerical analysis.

The goal of this PhD project is to develop efficient numerical methods to perform FSI analysis and shape optimization of flexible propellers
and azimuth thrusters. The implementations will be based on isogeometric analysis (IGA), a novel form of finite element analysis with
splines as basis functions. The primary focus of the work will be to develop and implement isogeometric boundary element methods
(panel methods) for the hydrodynamics and to couple them to existing codes for isogeometric structural analysis. In this way, both the
structural and the hydrodynamic analysis will be performed directly on the CAD model of the structure, leading to a significantly more
efficient workflow for design, analysis, and shape optimization. The research work also includes experimental work on propellers and
thrusters in model scale, which will be performed in the laboratories of SINTEF Ocean.

The PhD project is part of the KPN research project Fleksprop, financed by the Norwegian Research Council and Rolls-Royce Marine AS.
The project is managed by SINTEF Ocean, and NTNU Department of Marine Technology and Rolls-Royce Marine are participating in the
project. The PhD work will take advantage of collaboration with researchers at NTNU, SINTEF Ocean and Rolls-Royce Marine AS.

Qualifications
The position requires a Masters degree in marine technology, mechanical or civil engineering, industrial mathematics, or a similar relevant
area, with an average grade of B or better according to either NTNUs or the ECTS grading system. Candidates from universities outside
Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system
and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: http://ec.europa.eu/education/tools/diploma-supplement_en.htm

Candidates should have good knowledge in hydrodynamics and structural mechanics as well as in numerical methods like boundary
element methods (BEM) and/or finite element methods (FEM). Candidates should further have good programming skills and be interested
in participating in physical testing in the laboratories. Good English skills are also required. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic
and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers.

Conditions
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2 %
deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of
