1 Introduction

This installation guide is intended for anyone who needs to install Aspen SCM
V8.4, including system administrators, application developers, and end users.

aspenONE Overview
aspenONE is the comprehensive set of software solutions and professional
services provided by AspenTech; these are designed to help process
companies achieve their operational excellence objectives.
AspenTech releases its products on a single set of DVDs that are designed to
ease the installation of aspenONE products and/or modules. To achieve this
goal, all AspenTech products and modules use one installation procedure that
will guide you through your installation regardless of the products or modules
being installed.
Note: More information on aspenONE solutions as well as the aspenONE
Licensing Model can be found in the aspenONE Deployment Guide.

Packaging
Included in your package from AspenTech, you will find the following items
that you will need prior to installation:
A packing slip listing the version of the media that you have received and
indicating whether or not a dongle and/or CD containing the license file is
included in the shipment.
Package of DVDs (see Organization of DVDs below).
If a license file is included, a dongle or separate CD (instructions on SLM
License File Installation are included on the CD).

Notes:
Before you begin installation, you will want to print copies of the
Installation Guides for products that will be installed. Those guides are
included on the Aspen Engineering and Aspen Manufacturing and Supply

on the aspenONE DVD product discs. If you do not find a product included
on the aspenONE DVD product discs, please contact AspenTech Support at
http://support.aspentech.com.
Third-party products that AspenTech delivers without any modification of
the software are delivered in their original packages.

Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain

Two DVDs
There are two versions of the Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD to
support the different licensing models used by AspenTech. The two DVDs are
labeled Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2 and Aspen
Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2T.

Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2

DVD 2 contains the media that supports perpetual and pre-aspenONE
Licensing Model token-based systems. If you have perpetual license

1 Introduction 5
agreements or token-based license agreements by product (pre-July 2009),
you should use the DVD labeled Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD
2. The majority of customers are in this category. Software installed from this
DVD requires older license keys that have been in use since the aspenONE
2004 release.

Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2T

DVD 2T contains the media that supports the aspenONE Licensing Model
token-based system. This new all-inclusive token-based licensing model was
introduced in July 2009. Under this licensing model, customers are entitled to
install and run all of AspenTechs Manufacturing and Supply Chain products as
long as they have purchased sufficient tokens. To install software purchased
under this commercial agreement, use the DVD labeled Aspen Manufacturing
and Supply Chain DVD 2T. Software installed from this DVD requires run-time
token-based license keys.

Accessing aspenONE Documentation

aspenONE V8.4 includes new ways to access documentation associated with
the aspenONE products. Documentation is now available directly from the
applications. This eliminates the need to search for the Documentation DVD to
find the documents that you need and ensures that you can always find the
most current version of the document that you are looking for.
Documentation can be found in the following ways:
Installation Guides and Release Notes can be found by clicking the
corresponding link on the first page of the Installation Browser.
Context-sensitive help can be accessed by:
o Clicking the Help button on an application dialog box
o Pressing F1
o Clicking the application Help menu and selecting Help
Additional documents in PDF format can be accessed by:
o Clicking the Online Documentation link on the products Start page or
Start tab or selecting Documentation from the products Help menu.
This will open the Online Documentation Center from which you can
view and/or download the product-specific documents.
o Logging onto the AspenTech Customer Support site and browsing the
Documentation page.
o Downloading all of the available documentation from the Customer
website by downloading the zip file that contains the documentation.

Note: The aspenONE Documentation DVD is no longer available upon request

from AspenTech Support. As noted above, you can download a zip file
containing all AspenTech documentation, with the exception of Help files,
from the AspenTech Support web site. Help files are available from the
applicable product.

Note: Aspen SCM V8.4 supports the new user interface, associated
workflows, and a variety of functional enhancements that are not available to
applications created in V7.3 or prior releases.

Before you begin the migration process from V7.3 or prior versions, refer to
the Aspen SCM and Aspen SCM Applications Upgrade/Migration Guide
and the User Interface Configuration Reference Manual from the
AspenTech Support Center at http://support.aspentech.com.

Note: When you operate SCM in a Windows Server 2003 environment, access
to the online Help in SCM Applications is determined by the security
permission level of the first person to open that Help.

8 1 Introduction
If a user with a low-level security permission (for example, User) open an
SCM Application's Help first, then all users with a security permission at the
same level or higher will then be able to open that Help successfully. In other
words, nearly all users should then be able to open Help.

However, if a user with a high-level security permission (for example, Admin)

opens an SCM Application's help first, then only users with a security
permission at the same level or higher will then be able to open that Help
successfully. Users with lower-level security permission (in this example,
User) will be unable to open the Help.

To correct this, a user in the Admin group (that is, a user with Admin-level
security permission) can log into SCM and modify the security setting of
WebHelp.bat to grant full control to users with the lower-level security
permissions (such as User). Those users will then be able to open the Help in
that SCM Application.

Typically, each SCM Application is in a separate directory. If that is the case,

you must repeat this process in each SCM Application the first time you open
it. However, if one or more SCM Applications share a directory, then you
would only need to perform this process once, for the first SCM Application in
that directory that you open.

Note that this issue is specific to SCM when it is operating in a Windows

Server 2003 environment. It is not an issue in newer systems such as
Windows Server 8 and Windows 8.

Note: Aspen SCM V8.4 includes major updates to support the new user
interface, associated workflows, and a variety of functional enhancements
that are not available to applications created in V7.3 or prior releases.

Before you begin the migration process from V7.3 or prior versions, refer to
the Aspen SCM and Aspen SCM Applications Upgrade/Migration Guide for V8.4
from the AspenTech Support Center at http://support.aspentech.com.
