VENICE AND SERBIAN BOOK

Summary

In the ideal map of the Serbian people cultural geography, Venice has been
the westernmost border for a long time, the place where the Serbs used to go back
to print their books in the period between the 15th and 19th century. The zenith of
the Serbian book history in Venice is related to the activities of the Duke Boidar
Vukovi Podgorianin and Teodor and ure Ljubavi in the 16th century, as well as
to that of the Greek family Teodosije in the 18th century, who made Venice the central
place of the bookselling industry dedicated to the Serbs, through publishing books in
the Illyrian script. This study arises from the wish to shed some light on the multi-
century Serbian book history in Venice, paying close attention to the circumstances
in which the Serbian community lived in Venice, as well as to the specificities of the
Venetian printing.
