Prison has long been considered as the most common and traditional way of
punishment for criminals. Offenders are usually sent to prisons as a consequence of
the crimes that that they have committed against others. Many people argue that
prison is the only suitable and effective method to punish all offenders for their
crimes. Honestly, I believe that prison is not the best and only method of punishment
in all circumstances; in this essay I will explain my point of view supporting it with
examples. In spite of the prior mentioned opinion I believe that prison sentence is not
the only and most effective method of punishment.

Firstly, serious criminals such as murderers and people who commit violence and
harm others intentionally should not be only given a prison sentence. Such people
should face a more serious such as life imprisonment or death penalty. These are the
best sanctions for such crimes. Moreover, they can act as a deterrent to stop

is the best sanction for such a crimes, justice has to take its path. Because, their
victims have the right to feel safe and be away from further harm. Moreover, they
should be punished so it will be a deterrent to prevent people from committing crimes.

However, not all offenders are a big threat to the society, Some are for example, who
commit a minor crimes such as written graffiti on the wall, young offenders or
shoplifters. Petty crimins should not be send to the prison, part of the reason that it
may be wrong to take someone's livelihood just because they committed a minor
crime. However, as an alternative punishment they can service in the community. The
other part of reason is the possible significant danger that they become hardened
criminals, if they spent a time with career crimes like murders, rapists and violent.

On the other hand, people who think that prison is the only and the effective way of
sanction. They argued on that people have the right to live in a society free of
criminals, they believe that prison is the best place to rehabilitate criminals.

To conclude, prison is a common way of punishment for crimes, however i think is

not the only and effective method. There are circumstances where non-custodial
sentences might be both just and effective.
