Assignment 4 Eduard Gavril

Levine, Katya Slutskaya. "Metempsychosis in Serge Prokofiev's Music of the Soviet

Period: The Opera Semyon Kotko." The Opera Journal 39, no. 3 (September 2006):
3-15.

The journals subject matter is scholarly articles in the operatic world.

The volume that I quoted was published by the National Opera Association in
cooperation with West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, but the place of
publication varies. The editor, Robert Thieme, has a strong musical background,
occupying the vocal couching and accompanist positions at West Virginia University.
The members of the editorial review board also have musical affiliations, some are music
teachers, especially in the voice departments, in various universities, others are devoted
musicologists with published articles. The journal is peer reviewed.
The scholarly journal of The National Opera Association, is published yearly in March,
June, September, and December.
It was first published in 1968 and it is currently still being published.
The journal was published since the beginning under the same name. Sometimes it might
be found under the name Opera Journal but that might be a reference misquote. I
havent found it referenced like this in scholarly sources. It can also be found as part of
the National Opera Association Newsletter starting from 1998.
The journal targets as readers all individuals with interest in the subject of opera. They
can be scholars, educators, performers, musicologists, even amateur readers can find
interesting information. Concerning writers, they are looking for professionals, with
topics like: specific operatic works, operatic composers, the teaching of the operatic art
(vocal technique, movement, acting, etc.), specific opera directors, singers, conductors,
costume designers, set designers or aspects of opera direction and design.
The writing style is formal and impersonal
None of the articles that I looked over in the NGL were longer than 20 pages.
The publisher is not necessarily trying market this journal, but the access membership to
it does require payment. There is also the guest registration option but I wasnt able to
complete it because of technical problems with the page server. On the official website of
the National Opera Association, the journal is not an emphasized sector, I considered it
rather invisible.
There are no reviews included as far as I had access to the journal, nor any type of
correspondence.
This journal is not listed in JSTOR, nor in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and
Musicians.
