started with only nine members with each member having the capacity of 300 birds per shed having the
objective of encourage the members to take up poultry farming as a means of self-employment and self-
reliance. Therefore co-operative started with total of 2700 birds only. Early the government provides
the financial support along with Rabo bank and PRADAN used to mobilize the SHG members at
grassroots level. Initially PRADAN helped the organization in making the overall structure of the
organization and boost up the rural women to involve in broiler rearing. In the first year it suffered from
loss, but gradually it expand and started earning profit. But once the GGPS suffers from the huge loss
and it seems that this cooperative is going to close. But member take initiative, they took loans from
Mahila Vikash Mandal and give it to cooperative, by which it can run. Gradually GGPS started recovering
from that loss and earn profit. Now GGPS is the best cooperative in JWSSPCF Ltd. Now GGPS is currently
operating in 12 revenue villages of 3 blocks name Raidih, Palkot and Ghaghra with total 857 members.

surplus is around 49 thousands.

Governance and management

Co-operative consist of only women members. There is a general body from which 15 board of directors
are elected from each clusters and from that BOD one president and one vice president is elected by the
BOD. The BOD attends monthly meetings happened every month in which they keep some agenda of
the day in presence of manager and production manager and discussed on the agenda and take
decisions for the growth of the organization.

Benefits to the members

All the inputs required for the broiler rearing is given to the members. The duration of rearing DOC to
ready birds is 25-30 days therefore it will take a month in rearing the chicks and after marketing of ready
birds by the co-operative the grower charge is directly given into the members account within a week.
The grower charge is given on the basis of efficiency index of each members. So, there is nothing to lose
for the members. Only 6 to 7 batch is possible in a year, suppose if a member is earning 7 thousands per
batch it will give around 50 thousands in a year. Organization also provides health, education and social
welfare facilities for the members and their children.

Major issues and challenges

The major issue of the organization is to procure hatching eggs from the best supplier. As the hatching
eggs price will vary instantaneously and on an average 15% of damage is recorded during hatching the
eggs, it is difficult for the organization to reduce its cost.

Future plannings
Co-operative is planning to establish its own parent farm, so that it is easy to maintain quality,
quantity, cost and flexibility of the hatching eggs.
As co-operative is currently using feed in form of dust there is more wastage feed and 75% of
cost is incurred in rearing chicks is from feed. Therefore co-operative is planning to establish
fully automatic pellet plant for that it has already purchased the land.

Objective of the study

The main objective of this study is to learn from the organization by getting involved in the day to day
operation of the organization.

Methodology used
Interaction with members and board of members, focused group discussion with members,
management trainees and officials, personal interviews, and meetings with supervisors and officials

Findings
As the rearing of broiler chicks is done in small units or (400 1000) chicks of shed capacity at
different areas of the villages, diseases and flu cannot affect the whole production of the birds
of different areas in fact it is limited to the affected shed only.
Enhances the socio economic condition of the members. The women members are participated
in weekly meetings at village level and monthly meetings at cluster level.
Members of the organization use to participate in the panchayat level election
From management side all the inputs like DOC, vaccination, medicines, feed, and equipment are
given to the members by buying it from the approved suppliers at viable prices. For field level
management co-operative deputed supervisors per (20 to 30) sheds. Each supervisor has to
work 6 to 8 hours in a day. Every morning and evening they have to the member poultry shed
for checking the daily mortality and weather proper care of birds are done by the members or
not. The marketing of ready birds is also done by the co-operative at viable prices. The payment
of the supervisors are given on the basis of each members efficiency index means the payment
of supervisors are fully based on members performance. The members are paid on the basis of
their efficiency index.

Challenges faced
In this sector negotiation power is with buyers of the ready birds (wholesalers and retailers)
Prices of hatching eggs are very volatile therefore co-operative has to pay in advance
