Introduction

This research draft is based on the analyses of modularization in the automobile industry.

The automobile company which is selected as ac enter focus for this paper is Tesla Motors Inc.

In the automobile industry, modularization had comprised of architectural modifications in

production, supplier systems and product, production, and supplier systems with concerned areas

of automobile distribution where different purposes and aspects will be emphasised.

With the battery swap capability that Tesla has previously demonstrated and will roll out shortly,

it would appear to be that Tesla might be moving in that direction. In fact, the battery swap

capability is an exception to the trend of Tesla integrating the battery pack more and more into

the structure of the vehicle. Costs tend to come down when various components serve more than

one purpose, which is counter to the concept of modularity. And in EV market penetration, costs

are king. Modularization increases the acceptance of Tesla motors. Tesla motors with their

unique mission and along with the modular ability it will be most accepted in the near future.

Theoretical Motivation

The theoretical motivation for this research study is to combine the theory and practical

implementation of modularization in Tesla Motors Inc. which has not yet applied this strategy in

their automobiles.

Aims and Objectives of the research

This particular research study has following aims and objectives listed below:

To explore the opportunities of modularization in the automobile market.

To find out the current status of Tesla Motors in the automobile industry.
4

To identify the factors involved in merging modularization in Tesla Motors Inc.

Research Questions

The research questions which needs to be explored in the study are as follows:

What are the chances of modularization to fit in Tesla Motors?

What is the current market share and market position of Tesla Motors?

Which factors are responsible to help in merger of Modularization into Tesla Motors?

How has the modularization works in Tesla motors and how they are using this

innovative technology in enhancing their business?

Theoretical Literature

The modularization concept has appealed attention in the automobile industry in recent years. The

purpose and meaning of modularization in this sector vary among firms and regions. There is no

uniform definition of modularization in the industry clearly (Mohan, Trngren, Izosimov et al.,

2016). However, it is a relatively common feature of modularization of various practices in the

automobile industry. It consists of bigger units in the subgroup and also includes these subset

suppliers outsourcing (MacDuffie, 2013).

As modularization is still considered a new field relatively, therefore, there are many

methodologies and documents to study upon. The main question which exists is the correct

utilisation in the specific situation of a particular project to another venture. Modularization is

difficult to identify in a certain method or a process, since each architecture of the product is

different in a company (Milkovic, Ivkovic, and Konecki, 2016). This product specification also

vary firm to firm when modularizing is practiced. If a firm serves a market that is very rigid, there
5

may be many reasons to involve services of marketing like the firm was to serve a dynamic and

diverse market (Yamaguchi, 2016).

Research Methodology

Research methodology helps in setting a view for an effective research. This research study will

use random sampling technique. The research will be based on the descriptive research (Flick,

2015). This is a descriptive research which is relevant to an inquisitive study as it require some

analysis on the performance of different automobile companies where modularization is

implemented. There are two types of data that will be analysed in the research study; secondary

and primary (Mackey, and Gass, 2015). The secondary data will be collected from secondary

sources which includes Tesla official website, automobile websites, articles based on

modularization and researches in context with the role of modularization is automobile industry.

The primary data will be collected from primary sources which includes questionnaires and

interviews survey. The questionnaire will comprise of 15 questions where there will be 25

respondents belonging to the automobile engineering sector and Tesla Motors design engineers.

Working Schedule

The research will be carried on the following pattern based on the Gantt chart show below:
