orMahabisuhaSankranti,[2]isthetraditionalnewyearday PanaSankranti
festivalofHindusinOdisha,India.[3][4][5]Thefestivaldateis
setwiththesolarcycleofthelunisolarHinducalendar,as
thefirstdayofthetraditionalsolarmonthofMesha.Thisis
identicaltotheamantasystemoflunarmonthBaisakh(on
purnimantasystem,itisthe24thdayofChaitra).[2]It
thereforealmostalwaysfallson14Aprileveryyearonthe
Gregoriancalendar.[6]

ThefestivaliscelebratedwithvisitstoShiva,Shakti,or
Hanumantemples,asthedayisconsideredtobethebirthday
ofHanuman.[7]Peopletakebathsinriversormajor
pilgrimagecenters.Communitiesparticipateinmela(fairs),
watchstreetdanceoracrobaticperformances.Anotable
climaxofthesocialcelebrationsisfirewalk,where
volunteerssprintoverabedofburningcoalwhilebeing
cheeredwithmusicandsongs.[2]Feastsandspecialdrinks
suchasachilledsweetmangomilkyoghurtcoconutdrink
calledPanaisshared,atraditionthatpartlyisthesourceof

PanaSankrantiissimilartoNewYearfestivalsobservedby
HinduselsewheresuchasVaisakhi(northandcentralIndia),
Bihu(Assam),PohelaBoishakh(Bengal),Vishu(Kerala) OdiaHinduswelcomethenewyearwithtraditional
