ANDROID APPLICATION CONTROLLED APPLIANCE USING GSM AND

BLUETOOTH

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION.

Technology which is the organization of knowledge for human practical uses is meant

to make life easier. The advent of technology has made all aspect of human life comfortable.

Machines have been invented to make physical works easier, and computer have been

invented to human mental and physical works easier to carry out such as complex

calculations. Automation is a technology which involves machines and devices to be

controlled by an automation system such as computer or via electronic controls.

Human lives require ease, the evolution of automated system has increased the level of

affordability and simplicity through the integration of home appliances with android phones

connectivity. The advent of mobile phones has led to the invention of other technology such

as Bluetooth or GSM that has made transfer of data efficient and easier.

Controlling appliances from remote areas is an idea that adds to human value as dangerous

appliances can be turned off from a remote area. Controlling appliances from far distances

has mae life easy for the users of mobile mobility.

1.1 Problem Statement

Home automation is an evolved technology that has made human living easier and efficient.

There is a need to control appliances with less stress from a close and far distance through the

use of devices such as Bluetooth and GSM. This project seeks to make a device that can be

used to switch on and off electrical appliances from far and near distance employing

Bluetooth and GSM technology.

1.2 Aim and Objectives

The aim of this project is to design and construct an Android phone controlled appliance

using GSM and Bluetooth. The following objectives will be actualized in achieving the aim

of this project work:

1. To design an Android application that can send control via GSM and Bluetooth to the

system.

2. Construct.

3. Implement and Evaluate.

1.3 Methodology

The system is a control system with the capability of switching ON and OFF two appliances

from near distance with the use of Bluetooth and far distance using GSM technology. The

system control is implemented on an android application, the android application is

responsible for sending control command to the system which is used to trigger the relay that

controls the appliance connected to the system. The android application connects to a

Bluetooth residing on the system through which near distance controls are sent to the system

from the android application. A GSM module is interface with the system, the GSM module

is through which control commands are sent to the system from far distances from the

android application.

The major parts of the system are a GSM module, a Bluetooth module, an Atmega328

microcontroller, switching relays, power supply and a LCD module. The Atmega328 is the

central controller of the whole system where the program that controls the automation is

written onto. The switching relays are the devices responsible for turning ON and OFF both
appliances connected to the system. The power supply steps down and convert the

Alternating current mains to 5V direct current that can be used by the system and the LCD

module displays the status of the system to users for proper monitoring of the system.

The flowchart of the system is shown in figure 1.1.

1.4 Significance of Project

Unlike this project, most automation systems do not implement the use of an android

application based control system.

The use of manual switching between modes is eradicated with this system as the

android application has the interface for switching between GSM mode and Bluetooth

mode.

1.5 Scope of the study

The main aim of this project is to construct a system that uses GSM and Bluetooth to control

two appliances in near and far distances with an android application designed for this

purpose. It also aims at eliminating the physical stress used to switch ON and OFF

appliances.
