Dadhi-steya-varana
Description of the Yogurt Theft

Text 1

gaura-ymau manoharau llay cakratur ala
sundara nanda-mandiram

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; ata - then; blau - the two boys;
ka-rmau - Ka and Balarma; gaura-ymau - fair and dark; manoharau -
charming; llay - with pastimes; cakratu - did; alam - much; sundaram -
handsome; nanda-mandiram - Nanda's palace.

r Nrada said: With Their pastimes the two handsome fair and dark boys,
Ka and Balarma, made Nanda's palace beautiful.

rigamnau ca jnubhy
pbhy saha maithila vrajatlpena klena
bruvantau madhura vraje

rigamnau - crawling; ca - also; jnubhym - with knees; pbhym -


hands; saha - with; maithila - O king of Mithil; vrajat - gone; alpena - a little;
klena - time; bruvantau - talking; madhuram - sweetly; vraje - in Vraja.

O king of Mithil, They crawled on Their hands and knees and soon They were
speaking sweet words in Vraja.

llitau poitau i kad vinirgatv akt
kvacid aka samsthitau

yaoday - by Yaod; ca - and; rohiy - Rohi; llitau - caressed; poitau -


nourished; i - the two boys; kad - when?; vinirgatau - gone; akt - from the
lap; kvacit - where?; akam - a lap; samsthitau - staying.

Yaod and Rohi fed, fondled and caressed the two boys. When did the
boys leave their laps? To whose lap did They go?

majra-kikin-rva
kurvantau tv itas tata tri-lok mohayantau dvau
my-blaka-vigrahau

majra - of anklets; kikin - and bells; rvam - sounds; kurvantau - making;


tau - They; itas tata - here and there; tri-lokm - the three worlds; mohayantau
- enchanting; dvau - both; my - by the Yogamy potency; blaka - children;
vigrahau - forms.

Tinkling Their anklets and small bells, They enchanted the three worlds as
They went here and there. By the influence of Their Yogamy potency They
manifested the forms of two small boys.

krantam dya iu yaod-


jire luhanta vraja-blakai ca tad-dhli-lepvta-dharga
cakre hy ala prokaam darea

krantam - playing; dya - taking; ium - boy; yaod - Yaod; ajire - in


the courtyard; luhantam - rolling about; vraja - of Vraja; blakai - with the
boys; ca - and; tat - of that; dhli - dust; lep - ointment; vta - covered;
dhara - darkened; agam - limbs; cakre - did; hi - indeed; alam - greatly;
prokaam - sprinkling; darea - with respect.

When her son's limbs were dark, anointed with dust by playing in the
courtyard with the boys of Vraja, Yaod took Him and bathed Him with great
care.

jnu-dvaybhy ca sama karbhy


punar vrajan praganam etya ka mtr-aka-dee punar vrajan san
babhau vraje keari-bla-lla

jnu-dvaybhym - both knees; ca - and; samam - with; karbhym - both
hands; puna - again; vrajan - going; praganam - to the courtyard; etya - going;
ka - Ka; mt - of His mother; aka-dee - on the lap; puna - again;
vrajan - returning; san - being so; babhau - was splendidly manifested; vraje - in
Vraja; keari - lion; bla - cub; lla - pastimes.

On His hands and knees crawling first to the courtyard and then to His
mother's lap, Ka was like a lion cub splendidly playing in Vraja.

ta sarvato haimana-citra-yukta
ptmbara kacukam dadhnam sphurat-prabha ratnamaya ca mauli
dv suta prpa muda yaod

tam - Him; sarvata - completely; haimana - golden; citra - designs; yuktam -


endowed; ptmbara kacukam - yellow garments; dadhnam - wearing;
sphurat-prabham - splendid; ratnamayam - jeweled; ca - and; maulim - crown;
dv - seeing; sutam - her son; prpa - attained; mudam - happiness; yaod
- Yaod.

Gazing at her son dressed in yellow garments decorated with gold and
splendid with a crown of jewels, Yaod became happy.

bla mukundam ati-sundara-bla-keli


dv para mudam avpur atva gopya r-nanda-rja-vrajam etya gha
vihya
sarvs tu vismta-gh sukha-vigrahs t

blam - child; mukundam - Mukunda; ati-sundara - very handsome; bla -


childhood; kelim - pastimes; dv - seeing; param - great; mudam - happiness;
avpu - attained; atva - great; gopya - gops; r-nanda-rja-vrajam - the
cowherd village of King Nanda; etya - attaining; gham - home; vihya - leaving;
sarv - all; tu - certainly; vismta - forgotten; gh - homes; sukha - happy;
vigrah - forms; t - they.

Forgetting their homes, leaving them behind and coming to King Nanda's
cowherd village, all the gops gazed at the charming and playful child Mukunda
and became very happy.

r-nanda-rja-gha-ktrima-siha-rpa
dv vrajan pratiravan npa bhiruvad ya ntv ca ta nija-suta gham
vrajant
gopyo vraje sa-ghay hy avadan yaodm

r-nanda-rja - of King Nanda; gha - in the home; ktrima - artificial; siha -
lion; rpam - form; dv - seeing; vrajan - going; pratiravan - roaring a
challenge; npa - O king; bhiruvat - frightening; ya - who; ntv - leading; ca -
and; tam - Him; nija - his own; sutam - son; gham - home; vrajantm -
coming; gopya - the gops; vraje - in Vraja; sa-ghay - with compassion; hi -
indeed; avadan - told; yaodm - Yaod.

When infant Ka saw the statue of a lion at the entrance to King Nanda's
home, He became frightened and began to cry. The gops took Him inside and
compassionately spoke to Yaod.

r-gopya cu

krrtha cpala hy ena


m bahi kraygant bla-keli dugdha-mukha
kka-paka-dhara ubhe

r-gopya cu - the gops said; kr - playing; artham - for the purpose;


cpalam - restless; hi - indeed; enam - He; m - don't; bahi - outside; kraya -
take; agant - from the courtyard; bla - child's; kelim - playing; dugdha - milk;
mukham - in His mouth; kka - crow's; paka - feathers; dharam - wearing; ubhe
- O beautiful one.

The gops said: O beautiful one, don't take this restless and playful boy
decorated with crows' feathers and the milk still in His mouth out of the
courtyard to play.

Text 11

rdhva-danta-dvaya jta
prva mtula-doa-dam asypi mtulo nsti
te sutasya yaomati

rdhva - upper; danta - teeth; dvayam - two; jtam - born; prvam - before;
mtula - of the maternal uncle; doa - fault; dam - giving; asya - of Him; api -
even; mtula - maternal uncle; na - not; asti - is; te - of your; sutasya - sun;
yaomati - O Yaod.

O Yaod, your son's two front teeth have now appeared. Now his maternal
uncle should perform a ceremony to ward off inauspiciousness, but your son has
no maternal uncle.

tasmd dna tu kartavya

vighnn na-hetave go-vipra-sura-sdhn
chandasa pjana tath

tasmt - therefore; dnam - charity; tu - certainly; kartavyam - should be


given; vighnnm - of obstacles; na - destruction; hetave - for the cause; ga
- tp the cows; vipra - brhmaas; sura - demigods; sdhnm - and saintly
devotees; chandasam - Vedic mantras; pjanam - worship; tath - so.

Therefore, to destroy all obstacles you should give charity, chant Vedic
prayers, and worship the cows, brhmaas, demigods, and saintly devotees.

tad yaod-rohiyau
suta-kalyna-hetave vastra-ratna-navnnn
dna nitya ca cakratu

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; tad - then; yaod-rohiyau - Yaod


and Rohi; suta - of the son; kalyna-hetave - for the auspiciousness; vastra -
garments; ratna - jewels; nava - new; annnm - and grains; dna-charity;
nityam - regularly; ca - and; cakratu - did.

Then, to bring auspiciousness to their sons, Yaod and Rohi regularly gave
garments, jewels, and new grains in charity.

atha vraje rma-kau


bla-sihvalokanau padbhy calantau ghoeu
vardhamnau babhvatu

atha - then; vraje - in Vraja; rma - Balarma; kau - and Ka; bla-siha
- lion cubs; avalokanau - glance; padbhym - with their feet; calantau - walking;
ghoeu - in the cowherds' homes; vardhamnau - growing; babhvatu -
became.

Now walking on their two feet among the gopas's homes, and their glances
like those of a lion's cub, Ka and Balarma grew in the village of Vraja.

rdma-subaldyai ca
vayasyair vraja-blakai yamun-sikate ubhre
luhantau sa-kuthalau

rdma-subaldyai - headed by rdma and Subala; ca - also; vayasyai -
with friends; vraja-blakai - the boys of Vraja; yamun - of the Yamun; sikate -
on the beach; ubhre - beautiful; luhantau - wandering; sa-kuthalau - playing.

With the boys of Vraja, Their friends headed by rdm and Subala, They
played on the Yamun's sandy shore.

klindy-upavane ymais
tamlai sa-ghanair vte kadamba-kuja-obhhye
cerat rma-kevau

klind - of the Yamun; upavane - in the gardens; ymai - with dark;


tamlaitamala trees; sa- ghanai - sturdy; vte - filled; kadamba - of kadamba
trees; kuja - grove; obh - beauty; ahye - rich; ceratu - moved; rma-kevau
- Ka and Balarma.

In the Yamun's forests opulent with kadamba groves and sturdy black
tamla trees, Ka and Balarma walked.

Text 17

janayan gopa-gopnm
nanda bla-llay vayasyai coraym sa
navanta ghta hari

janayan - creating; gopa-gopnm - of the gopas and gops; nandam - bliss;


bla-llay - with childhood pastimes; vayasyai - with friends; coraym sa -
stole; navantam - butter; ghtam - and ghee; hari - Lord Hari.

Delighting the gopas and gops with His childhood pastimes, with His friends
Lord Hari stole butter and ghee.

Text 18

ekad hy upanandasya
patn nmn prabhvat r-nanda-mandira prpt
yaod prha gopik

ekad - once; hi - indeed; upanandasya - of Upananda; patn - the wife;


nmn - by name; prabhvat - Prabhvat; r-nanda-mandiram - to Nanda's
palace; prpt - come; yaodm - to Yaod; prha - said; gopik - the gop.

One day Prabhvat-gop, who was Upananda's wife, came to Nanda's palace
and spoke to Yaod.

navanta ghta dugdha


dadhi takra yaomati vayor bheda-rahita
tvat-prasdc ca me 'bhavat

r-prabhvat uvca - r Prabhvat said; navantam - butter; ghtam -


ghee; dugdham - milk; dadhim - yogurt; takram - buttermilk; yaomati - Yaod;
vayo - of us; bheda - difference; rahitam - without; tvat-prasdt - by your
mercy; ca - also; me - of me; abhavat - was.

r Prabhvat said: O Yaod, for the two of us there is no separate property


in butter, ghee, milk, yogurt, and buttermilk. By your kindness yours is also
mine.

Text 20

nha vadmi cnena


steya kutrpi ikitam ika karoi na sute
navanta-mui svata

na - not; aham - I; vadmi - say; ca - also; anena - by Him; steyam - to be


stolen; kutrpi - somewhere; ikitam - taught; ikam - teaching; karoi - you
do; na - not; sute - to your son; navanta - butter; mui - stealing; svata - by
Himself.

I don't say you taught Him to steal. You didn't teach Him. Your son steals
butter on His own.

Text 21

yad may kt ik
tad dhas tavgaja gli-pradna dattvaya
dravati pragann mama

yad - when; may - by me; kt - done; ik - instruction; tad - then;


dha - bold; tava - your; agaja - son; gli - bad words; pradnam - gift;
dattv - giving; ayam - He; dravati - runs; pragant - from the courtyard; mama
- my.

When I try to give Him good instruction, Your arrogant son gives me bad
words and runs from my courtyard.

Text 22

vrajdhasya putro 'ya

bhtv steya samcaret na may kathita kicid
yaode tava gauravt

vrajdhasya - of the king of Vraja; putra - the son; ayam - He; bhtv -
having become; steyam - theft; samcaret - may perform; na - not; may - by
me; kathitam - told; kicit - something; yaode - O Yaod; tava - for you;
gauravt - out of respect.

He is the son of Vraja's king. He should not steal. O Yaod, there are some
other things also that, out of respect for you, I have not told.

Text 23

rutv prabhvat-vkya
yaod nanda-gehin bla nirbhartsya tm ha
smn prema-paryan

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; rutv - hearing; prabhvat-vkyam -


Prabhavati's words; nanda - Nanda's; gehin - wife; blam - the boy; nirbhartsya
- rebuking; tam - to Him; ha - said; smn - with sweet words; prema-paryan
- full of love.

r Nrada said: After hearing Prabhvat's words, Yaod, the wife of Nanda,
rebuked her son, and with great love gently spoke to Prabhvat.

gav koir ghe me 'sti


gorasair arditcal na jne dadhi-mu blo
ntti so 'tra kadcana

r-yaod uvca - r Yaod said; gavm - of cows; koi - ten million;


ghe - in the home; me - of me; asti - is; gorasai - with milk; ardit - overcome;
acal - cannot move; na - not; jne - I know; dadhi - milk; muk - in the mouth;
bla - child; na - not; atti - eats; sa - He; atra - here; kadcana - ever.

r Yaod said: I have ten million cows. There is so much yogurt in the house
I cannot move. I do not know why my little boy never drinks any of the yogurt
here.

anena muita gavya

tat-sama tva gha me te iau me iau bhedo
nsti kicit prabhvati

anena - by Him; muitam - stolen; gavyam - yogurt; tat-samam - like that;


tvam - you; gha - give; me - to me; te - your; iau - boy; me - my; iau -
boy; bheda - difference; na - not; asti - is; kicit - at all; prabhvati - O
Prabhvat.

Bring this yogurt-thief to me. O Prabhvat, there is no difference between


your son and my son.

Text 26

navanta-mukha cainam
atra tva hy nayiyasi tad ik kariymi
bhartsana bandhana tath

navanta-mukham - butter on His mouth; ca - also; enam - Him; atra - here;


tvam - you; hi - indeed; nayiyasi - will bring; tad - then; ikm - a lesson;
kariymi - I will do; bhartsanam - rebuke; bandhanam - tying up; tath - then.

You bring that boy here with butter in His mouth and I will give Him a lesson. I
will scold Him and tie Him up.

rutv vkya tad gop


prasann gham gat ekad dadhi-cauryrtha
kas tasy gha gata

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; rutv - hearing; vkyam - these words;


tad - then; gop - the gop; prasann - happy; gham - home; gat - came;
ekad - one day; dadhi - of yogurt; caurya - theft; artham - for the purpose;
ka - Ka; tasy - of her; gham - to the home; gata - went.

r Nrada said: Hearing these words, the gop became happy and went
home. Then one day Ka went to her home to steal yogurt.

vayasyair blakai srdha


prva-kuye ghasya ca hastd dhasta saghtv
anai ko vivea ha

vayasyai - with His friends; blakai - the boys; srdham - with; prva -
side; kuye - on the wall; ghasya - of the house; ca - also; hastt - by a hand;

hastam - to a hand; saghtv - grasping; anai - gradually; ka - Ka;
vivea ha - entered.

Grasping it with one hand after another, Ka and His boy friends gradually
scaled the outer wall and entered the courtyard.

Text 29

ikya-stha gorasa dv hastgrhya hari svayam ulkhale phake ca


gopn sthpyruroha tam

ikya-stham - suspended on ropes; gorasam - yogurt; dv - seeing; hasta-


with a hand; agrhyam - not graspable; hari - Lord Hari; svayam - personally;
ulkhale - on a grinding-mortar; phake - footstool; ca - and; gopn - the gopas;
sthpya - placing; ruroha - climbed; tam - that.

Seeing the yogurt was in a jug hanging on ropes beyond His hand's reach, by
arranging a footstool, a grinding mortar, and the gopa boys, Lord Hari climbed
up to it.

Text 30

tad api praunlabhya


gorasa ikya-sasthitam rdmn subalenpi
daenpi tata ca

tat - that; api - and; praun - tall; alabhyam - not attainable; gorasam -
yogurt; ikya- sasthitam - in the jug hanging on ropes; rdmn - by rdm;
subalena - by Subala; api - also; daena - with a stick; api - also; tata - struck;
ca - and.

When even from that height the yogurt-jar hanging from ropes could not be
reached, rdm and Subala hit the jar with sticks.

bhagna-bht sarva-gavya
vahad bhmau manoharam jaghsa subalo markair
blakai saha mdhava

bhagna - broken; bht - from the jar; sarva - all; gavyam - the yogurt;
vahat - flowing; bhmau - to the ground; manoharam - charming; jaghsa - ate;
subala - Subala; markai - with the monkeys; blakai - the boys; saha - with;
mdhava - Ka.

As all the beautiful yogurt flowed from the broken jug to the ground, Ka,
Subala, the boys, and some monkeys, all ate it.

prpta gop prabhvat palyiteu bleu
jagrha r-kara hare

bhagna - broken; bha - jug; svanam - the sound; rutv - hearing; prpt -
came; gop - the gop; prabhvat - Prabhvat; palyiteu - fled; bleu -
when the boys; jagrha - grabbed; r-karam - the beautiful hand; hare - of
Lord Hari.

Hearing the sound of the jug breaking, the gop Prabhvat came. As the
boys fled, she grabbed Lord Hari's beautiful hand.

Text 33

ntv mru bhru ca


gacchant nanda-mandiram agre nanda sthita dv
mukhe vastra cakra ha

ntv - bringing; m - false; aru - tears; bhrum - frightened; ca - and;


gacchant - going; nanda - Nanda's; mandiram - to the palace; agre - before;
nandam - Nanda; sthitam - standing; dv - seeing; mukhe - in the mouth;
vastram - cloth; cakra - did; ha - indeed.

As frightened Ka shed false tears, she brought Him to Nanda's palace.


Seeing Nanda standing there, she covered Ka's face with the edge of His
garment.

Text 34

harir vicintayann ittha


mt daa pradsyati dadhra tad-bla-rpa
svacchanda-gatir vara

hari - Lord Hari; vicintayan - thinking; ittham - thus; mt - His mother;


daam - a stick; pradsyati - gave; dadhra - manifested; tad-bla- rpam -
that child's form; svacchanda-gati - independent; vara - Supreme Controller.

Lord Hari thought, "My mother will hit Me with a stick." The Supreme
Personality of Godhead, who can do whatever He likes, then manifested the form
of Prabhvat's son.

s yaod sametyu
prha gop runvit bha bhagn-kta sarva
muita dadhy anena vai

s - she; yaod - Yaod; sametya - coming; u - quickly; prha - said; gop
- gop; runvit - angry; bham - the jug; bhagn- ktam - broken; sarvam -
everything; muitam - stolen; dadhi - yogurt; anena - by Him; vai - certainly.

Yaod quickly came. The angry gop said, "He broke a jug and stole all the
yogurt in it."

Text 36

yaod tat-suta vkya


hasant prha gopikm vastrnta ca mukhd gopi
dr-ktya vadhasa

yaod - Yaod; tat-sutam - her son; vkya - looking; hasant - laughing;


prha - said; gopikm - to the gop; vastra - garment; antam - end; ca - and;
mukht - from the mouth; gop - the gop; dr-ktya - taking far away; vada -
tell; ahasa - the offense.

Seeing Her son, Yaod smiled and said to the gop, O gop, take the edge of
the garment from His face and tell the mischief He has done.

apavdo yad deyo


nirvsa kuru me purt yumat-putra-kta caurya
asmat-putra-kta bhavet
apavda - the account of His offense; yad - when; deya - given; nirvsam
- sending away; kuru - do; me - of me; purt - from the house; yumat - your;
putra - son; ktam - done; cauryam - theft; asmat - my; putra - son; ktam -
done; bhavet - may be.

"When it may be said my son has done mischief you may throw Him out of
my house. Your son did the theft you say my son did."

Text 38

jana-lajj-samyukt
dr-ktya mukhmbaram spi prha nija bla
vkya vismita-mnas

jana - of the people; lajj - embarrassment; samyukt - with; dr-ktya -


put far away; mukha - face; ambaram - cloth; s - she; api - also; prha - said;
nijam - to her own; blam - boy; vkya - looking; vismita - surprised; mnas -
heart.

Ashamed of what people might think, she took the cloth from His face. Seeing
her own son, she was surprised at heart and said:

vraja-sro 'sti me kare vadantttha ca ta ntv
nirgat nanda-mandirt

nipada - without walking; tvam - you; kuta - how?; prpta - come; vraja -
of Vraja; sra - the treasure; asti - is; me - of me; kare - in the hand; vadant -
saying; ittham - thus; ca - and; tam - him; ntv - bringing; nirgat - left; nanda
- of Nanda; mandirt - the palace.

"How did you come here without walking? I have the treasure of Vraja in my
hand!" Saying this, and taking him with her, she left Nanda's palace.

yaod rohi nando


rmo gopa ca gopik jahsu kathayantas te
do 'nyyo vraje mahn

yaod - Yaod; rohi - Rohi; nanda - Nanda; rma - Balarma; gop -


the gopas; ca - and; gopik - gops; jahsu - laughed; kathayanta - talking;
te - they; da - seen; anyya - injustice; vraje - in Vraja; mahn - great.

Yaod, Rohi, Nanda, Balarma, and the gopas and gops laughed, saying,
"Today we saw a great injustice in Vraja."

bhagavs tu bahir vthy


bhtv r-nanda-nandana prahasan gopik prha
dhga cacalekaa

bhagavn - the Lord; tu - certainly; bahi - outside; vthym - on the path;


bhtv - becoming; r-nanda-nandana - the son of Nanda; prahasan -
laughing; gopikm - to a gop; prha - said; dhga - bold; cacala - restless;
kaa - eyes.

On the path outside again becoming Nanda's son, the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, smiling, confident, and His eyes restless, spoke to the gop
Prabhvat.

punar m yadi ghsi


kadcit tva he gopike te bhrt-rpas tu tad

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; puna -


again; mm - to Me; yadi - if; ghsi - you are kind; kadcit - sometime; tvam -
you; he gopike - O gop; te - of you; bhrt - of the husband; rpa - in the form;
tu - certainly; tad - then; bhaviymi - I will become; na - not; saaya -
doubt.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O gop, if you capture Me again, I


will take the form of your husband. There is no doubt of it.

gat gehe 'tha maithila tad sarva-ghe gopyo
na ghanti hari hriy
r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; rutv - hearing; s - she; vismit -
struck with wonder; gop - the gop; gat - went; gehe - home; atha - then;
maithila - O king of Mithil; tad - then; sarva-ghe - in every home; gopya -
the gops; na - not; ghanti - took; harim - Lord Hari; hriy - out of
embarrassment.

O king of Mithil, when she heard this, the astonished gop went home. From
then on, in every home, impelled by fear of embarrassment, the gops would
not capture Ka. .pa

Chapter Eighteen

Brahma-daranam Vision of the Universal Form

homes; vicaran - thinking; navanta - of butter; caura - the thief; yma -
dark; manohara - charming; vapu - form; nava - new; kaja - lotus; netra -
eyes; r - handsome; bla - rising; candra - moon; iva - like; vddhi- gata -
full; narm - of men; cittam - the heart; haran - stealing; iva - like; cakra -
did; vraje - in Vraja; ca - also; obhm - beauty.

r Nrada said: Wandering from one to another of the gops' homes and
stealing the hearts of the cowherd people, that charming, handsome,
blossoming-lotus-eyed dark butter-thief, like a rising full moon, brought great

r-nanda-nandanam - the son of Nanda; atva - very; calam - restless;


ghtv - taking; geham - home; nidhya - placing; mumuhu - became
enchanted; nava- nanda-gop - the nine Nanda-gopas; sat-kandukai - with toy
balls; ca - and; satatam - always; pariplayanta - protecting; gyanta - singing;
rjita- sukh - very happy; na - not; jagat - the world; smaranta -
remembering.

Taking Nanda's restless ball-playing son into their homes, protecting Him,
feeding Him, singing His glories, and so happy they did not remember anything
else in the world, the nine Nanda- gopas were completely enchanted.

The king said: Who were the fortunate nine Upanandas in their previous
birth? What were the auspicious deeds of the six Vabhnus? O sage of the

Smti-stra explains that the nine Nandas, who have dark complexions and
hold sticks in their hands, reside in two forest- groves in Lord Kacandra's
Goloka.

nikuje - in the forest grove; koia - millions; gva - of cows; tsm - of

Smti-stra explains that the nine Nandas, wealthy in flutes and peacock
feathers, are devoted to protecting the millions of cows in their forest grove.

nikuja - the forest grove; durga - of the fortress; rakym - in protection;


daa - sticks; pa - and nooses; dhar - holding; sthit - standing; a-
dvram - six gates; sthit - situated; a - six; vai - indeed; kathit - called;
vabhvana - the Vabhnus.

The men who, holding sticks and nooses, stand at six gates to protect the
fortress of this forest grove are called the six Vabhnus.

golokd gat bhuvi te prabhva vaktu hi
na samartha catur-mukha

r-kasya - of r Ka; icchay - by the desire; sarvam - all; golokt -
from Goloka; gat - came; bhuvi - to the earth; tem - of them; prabhvam -
the glory; vaktum - to say; hi - indeed; na - not; samartha - Brahm; catur-
mukha - who has four mouths.

By Lord Ka's wish they all went from Goloka to this earth. Even the
demigod Brahm is not able to describe their glories.

aha kim u vadiymi


te bhgya mahodayam yem roham sthya
bla-kelir babhau hari

aham - I; kim u - how?; vadiymi - will describe; tem - of them; bhgyam -


the good fortune; mah- udayam - great; yem - of whom; roham - the exalted
position; sthya - accepting; bla - childhood; keli - pastimes; babhau -
manifested; hari - Lord Hari.

How can I describe their good fortune? As He manifested His childhood


pastimes, Lord Hari treated them with great respect.

ekad - one day; yamun-tre - on the shore of the Yamun; mt - clay;


kena - by Lord Ka; avalhit - was eaten; yaodm - to Yaod; blak
- the boys; prhu - said; atti - ate; bla - the boy; mdam - clay; tava - your.

One day Ka ate clay on the Yamun's bank. The boys said to Yaod, "Your
boy ate clay."

balabhadre - when Balarma; ca - also; vadati - said; tad - then; s - she;

When Balarma also said it, Nanda's wife took her frightened-eyed son by the
hand and spoke to Him.

r Yaod said: Why did You, who know what is good to eat, eat clay? Your
friends say You did. Your elder brother Balarma said, "O mother, it is true. He
would not leave the clay."

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: The boys of Vraja are all lying. I
never ate clay. I speak the truth. Look in My mouth.

Seeing there the seven continents, seven oceans, the many countries and
great mountain ranges, the three planetary systems up to Brahmaloka, her own
relatives, and the people of Vraja, she closed her eyes as she stood by the
Yamun's shore. Then she understood, "My boy is Lord Hari Himself!"

iva - as if; myay - with His Yogamy potency; yaod - Yaod; vaibhavam -

Then, as if He were casting a spell on her with His Yogamy potency, r


Ka smiled. From that moment Yaod could not remember the glory and

Lord Gopla's transcendental pastimes,

yaod - Yaod; api - also; samutthya - rising; prta - in the morning; r-

vinikipya - placing; mamantha - churned; dadhi - yogurt; sundar - beautiful.

Rising early in Nanda's palace, beautiful Yaod put yogurt in a jug and
churned it.

majra - of her anklets; rvam - sound; sakurvan - making; bla - boy; r-


nanda- nandana - Nanda's son; nanarta - danced; navanta - butter; artham -
for; gavya - milk products; dna - taking; kuthalt - because of eagerness.

His anklets jingling, Nanda's son eagerly danced to get some butter.

mtu parvam anubhraman sundi-kikin-sagha-
jhakra krayan muhu

bla - child; keli - pastimes; babhau - manifested; ntyan - dancing; mtu -


of His mother; parvam - the side; anubhraman - following; sundi - melodious;

kikin - tinkling ornaments; sagha - multitude; jhakram - tinkling; krayan -
making; muhu - again and again.

Dancing, following His mother, and making His ornaments jingle sweetly, He
played as a child.

haiyagavna satata navna


ycan sa mtur madhura bruvan sa dya haste 'masuta ru su-dhr
bibheda ko dadhi-mantha-ptram

haiyagavnam - butter; satatam - repeatedly; navnam - fresh; ycan -


begging; sa - He; mtu - of His mother; madhuram - sweetly; bruvan - saying;
sa - He; dya - taking; haste - in His hand; amasutam - emerald; ru - with
anger; su- dh - intelligent; bibheda - broke; ka - Ka; dadhi - yogurt;
mantha - churning; ptram - jug.

After again and again begging His mother for some fresh butter, intelligent
Ka finally took an emerald in His hand and angrily broke the yogurt-churn.

palyamna sva-suta yaod


prabhvat prpa na hasta-mtrt yogvarm api yo durpa
katha s mtur grahae prayti

palyamnam - fleeing; sva - own; sutam - son; yaod - Yaod;


prabhvatsplendid; prpa - attained; na - not; hasta - a hand; mtrt - only;
yogi - of the yogs; varm - of the kings; api - also; ya - who; durpa -
cannot be attained; katham - how?; sa - He; mtu - of His mother; grahae -
in the grip; prayti - goes.

Beautiful Yaod could not catch her fleeing son, for He was always a hand's
length away. Even the kings of the yogs cannot attain Him. Why should He fall
in His mother's grip?

tathpi bhakteu ca bhakta-vayat


pradarit r-hari npevara bla ghtv sva-suta yaomat
babandha rajjvtha ru hy ulkhale

tathpi - nevertheless; bhakteu - among the devotees; ca - also; bhakta - by


the devotees; vayat - control; pradarit - revealed; r-hari - by Lord Hari;
npa-vara - O king of kings; blam - the boy; ghtv - grasping; sva-sutam -

her own son; yaomat - Yaod; babandha - bound; rajjv - with rope; atha -
then; ru - angrily; hi - indeed; ulkhale - to the grinding mortar.

O king of kings, then Lord Hari showed that He places Himself under the
control of His devotees. Yaod caught her son and angrily tied Him with rope to
the grinding mortar.

dya yad yad bahu dma tat tat


sv-alpa prabhta sva-sute yaod guair na baddha prakte paro ya
katha sa baddho bhavatha dmn

dya - taking; yad yat - whatever; bahu - great; dma - rope; tat tat - that; su
- very; alpam - small; prabhtam - become; sva-sute - on her son; yaod -
Yaod; guai - with ropes; na - not; baddha - bound; prakte - the material
world; para - above; ya - who; katham - how?; sa - He; baddha - bound;
bhavati - is; iha - here; dmn - with rope.

The ropes all became very small on her son. He who is beyond the material
world cannot be bound with rope. How can He be bound with rope?

yad yaod gata-bandhanecch


khinn nia npa khinna-mnas st tadya kpay sva-bandhe
svacchanda-yna sva-vao 'pi ka

yad - when; yaod - Yaod; gata - gone; bandhana - binding; icch -


desire; khinn - depressed; nia - morose; npa - O king; khinna - unhappy;
mnas - at heart; st - was; tad - then; ayam - He; kpay - mercifully; sva-
bandhe - in His bondage; svacchanda-yna - independent; sva- vaa -
independent; api - even; ka - Ka.

When, frustrated and depressed, Yaod stopped trying, then independent


Ka kindly allowed her to bind Him.

O king, the mercy He gave His mother He never gave to the renunciants and
philosophers, what to speak of the fruitive workers. Lord Ka gives them
liberation, not devotional service.

tadaiva gopyas tu samgats tvara


dvtha bhagna dadhi-mantha-bhjanam ulkhale baddham atva dmabhir
bhta iu vkya jagur ghtur

tad - then; eva - indeed; gopya - gops; tu - indeed; samgat - arrived;


tvaram - quickly; dv - seeing; atha - then; bhagnam - broken; dadhi -
yogurt; mantha - churning; bhjanam - jug; ulkhale - on the grinding mortar;
baddham - bound; atva - greatly; dmabhi - with ropes; bhtam - frightened;
ium - child; vkya - seeing; jagu - sang; gh - with kindness; tur -
overcome.

The gops quickly came. Seeing the broken yogurt-churn and the frightened
child tightly bound with ropes to the grinding mortar, they became filled with
compassion and spoke.

The gops said: In our homes the children break these clay jugs all the time.
O wife of Nanda, we say that you are not kind.

O cold, merciless Yaod, O queen of Vraja, you beat this boy with a stick and
tied Him up only because He broke a clay jug.

r Nrada said: After this was spoken and Yaod became absorbed in her
housework, Ka, dragging the mortar along, went with the boys to the
Yamun.

tat-tae - on its shore; ca - also; mah-vkau - two great trees; purau -

middle; gata - gone; ka - Ka; hasan - smiling; dmodara - His belly
bound by a rope; prabhu - the Lord.

His belly bound with a rope, smiling Lord Ka wandered between two great
old arjuna trees by the Yamun's shore.

tiryag-gatam ulkhalam karaena sa-mlau dvau
petatur bhmi-maale

cakara - pulled; sahas - at once; ka - Ka; tiryak-gatam - sideways;
ulkhalam - grinding mortar; karaena - by pulling; sa-mlau - with their roots;
dvau - both; petatu - fell; bhmi-maale - to the ground.

Ka tugged at the sideways grinding mortar. By His tug the two trees were
uprooted and fell to the ground.

pracao vajra-ptavat vinirgatau ca vkbhy
devau dvv edhaso 'gni-vat

ptatena - by the falling; api - also; abda - sound; abht - was; pracaa -
violent; vajra-ptavat - like a thunderbolt; vinirgatau - emerged; ca - also;
vkbhym - from the two trees; devau - demigods; dvau - two; edhasa agni-
vat - effulgent as fires.

The violent sound of their falling was like thunder. From the two trees
emerged two demigods splendid as fire.

pdau spau sva-maulin ktajal hari natv
tau tu tat-sammukhe sthitau

dma - rope; udaram - belly; parikramya - circumambulating; pdau - feet;


spau - touching; sva-maulin - with their helmets; ktajal - with folded
hands; harim - to Lord Hari; natv - offering obeisances; tau - they; tu - indeed;
tat-sammukhe - in His presence; sthitau - stood.

Circumambulating Lord Dmodara, touching His feet with their helmets, and
offering obeisances to Him, the two demigods stood before Him with folded
hands.

sadyas te 'cyuta darant mbht te nija-bhaktn

r-devau catu - the demigods said; vm - we; muktau - liberated;

You; acyuta - O infallible Lord; darant - by the sight; m - not; abht - was; te -

The two demigods said: O infallible Lord, by seeing You we are now free from
a brhmaa's punishment. We should not have offended Your devotees.

jagan-magala-line dmodarya kya
govindya namo nama

karu - of mercy; tubhyam - to You; jagat - of the universes; magala -


auspiciousness; line - whose nature; dmodarya - whose belly is bound with a
rope; kya - to Lord Ka; govindya - the pleasure of the cows, land, and
senses; nama - obeisances; nama - obeisances.

Obeisances, obeisances to You, Lord Ka, the pleasure of the cows, land,
and senses, the auspiciousness of the worlds, an ocean of mercy, the Lord whose
belly is bound with a rope!

O children of Vraja, please tell us," the children of Vraja spoke.

The children said: Ka made the two trees fall. From the trees two effulgent

hundred; dadau - gave.

Then Nanda placed his boy on his lap, embraced Him, smelled Him, rebuked
his wife, and gave a hundred cows in charity to the brhmaas.

r-bahulva uvca - r Bahulva said; kau - who?; imau - they; puruau


- persons; divyau - effulgent; vada - tell; devari-sattama - O best of the demigod
sages; kena - by what?; doea - fault; vkatvam - the state of being trees;
prpitau - attained; yamala-arjunau - two arjuna trees.

r Bahulva said: Who were those two effulgent men? O best of the
demigod sages, please tell me. Because of what sin did they become two arjuna
trees?

nalakvara-maigrvau
rja-rja-sutau parau jagmatur nandana-vana
mandkinys tae sthitau

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; nalakvara- maigrvau - Nalakvara


and Maigrvau; rja-rja-sutau - the sons of the great king of kings; parau -
great; jagmatu - went; nandana-vanam - to the Nandana forest; mandkiny -
of the celestial Ganges; tae - on the shore; sthitau - situated.

r Nrada said: They were the two demigods Nalakvara and Maigrva, the
two demigod sons of the great king (Kuvera). (One day) they both went to the
Nandana forest by the shore of the celestial Ganges.

apsarobhir gyamnau
ceratur gata-vsasau varu-madir-mattau
yuvanau dravya-darpitau

apsarobhi - by apsaras; gyamnau - sung; ceratu - went; gata-vsasau -


without clothing; varu- madir - by varu wine; mattau - intoxicated;
yuvanau - young; dravya - of their possessions; darpitau - proud.

Drunk on varu wine and proud of their possesions, they walked naked as
many apsars sang to them.

munndro veda-praga nagnau dv ca tv ha
dua-lau gata-smt

kadcit - one time; devala - Devala; nma - named; muni-indra - the king of
sages; veda - of the Vedas; pra - to the farther shore; ga - gone; nagnau - the
two naked men; dv - seeing; ca - and; tau - to them; ha - said; dua-
lau - wicked; gata- smt - forgetful.

One day the great sage named Devala, who had gone to the farther shore of
the Vedas, saw the two degenerate, naked, forgetful men and spoke to them.

nirlajjau dravya-darpitau tasmd vkau tu bhyas ta
var ataka bhuvi

r-devala uvca - r Devala said; yuvm - you both; vka - trees; samau -
equal to; dau - seen; nirlajjau - without shame; dravya-darpitau - proud of
possessions; tasmt - then; vkau - trees; tu - indeed; bhya - become; tam -
that; varm - of years; atakam - a hundred; bhuvi - on the earth.

r Devala Muni said: I see You two shameless and proud men have become
like trees. For this reason you will now be trees for a hundred years on the earth.

nandin- tre - on the Yamun's shore; mahvana-sampata - near Mahvana
forest; paripratamam - the Supreme Personality of Godhead; skt - directly;
kam - Ka; dmodaram - Dmodara; harim - Hari; goloka-ntham - the
master of Goloka; tam - Him; dv - seeing; prva - previous; rpau - form;
bhaviyatha - you will attain.

At the end of Dvpara-yuga, in Bhrata-vara, in Mthura district, in the circle


of Vraja, on the Yamun's shore near Mahvana forest, you will see the original

Supreme Personality of Godhead, Ka, who is the master of Goloka, and who is
known as Dmodara and Hari. When you see Him, you will regain your original
forms.

ittha devala-pena
vkatva prpitau npa nalakvara-maigrvau
r-kena vimocitau

ittham - thus; devala - of Devala; pena - by the curse; vkatvam - the state
of being trees; prpitau - attained; npa - O king; nalakvara - Nalakvara;
maigrvau - and Maigrva; r- kena - by Lord Ka; vimocitau - released.

In this way, by Devala Muni's curse, Nalakvara and Maigrva became trees
and were liberated by Lord Ka.
